Stoodley Pike for some technical training. It was a lovely afternoon but i felt lethargic and bimbled around a bit before mincing back to the car. Ive either got a post JK hangover (likely) or watching the world x-country on tv prior to training had put me to sleep even more than i realised (very likely).

Running to and from the race start. How can we only make the start time by 5mins when we only live 1.5miles away? By faffing thats how, doh! Didnt even have time to register or get a number.

Midgely Moor Fell Race. The first climb hurt a lot and when we hit the moor i was the only person out of the first pack to take the longer path route round the terrain which i reckon might be about 20 secs slower but at least i didnt have to run through 1km of knee deep heather. Flung myself down the first proper descent in a bid to reel in the guy in front and caught him on the steep climb back onto the moor and was starting to catch 5th+6th until they cut straight across the deep heather and i went round again. Finished 7th (i think) and would have been interesting to see if i would have been higher without the maverick route choices. Enjoyed running in an out of control fashion down the tricky descents, which is of course the whole point of fell running, along with wearing indecently small shorts.

Did some strides and drills afterwards to just get the legs turning over a bit. Perhaps not doing these has been my undoing over the last couple of months. Unlikely, but its worth a try.

Ran up to Midgley moor via the footpath that goes through someones garage, the garage owners were cleaning the inside of their car in said garage. Reccied some of the routes between checkpoints for the race this weekend. Think ive got the first route sorted but am unsure where checkpoint 4 is supposed to be. I'll have to resort to that classic fellrunning technique of following the person infront. Didnt mean to run for as long as 80mins but it was a glorious spring evening to be on the fells. legs were a little heavy towards the end, i'll do summat shorter tommorrow.

Recovery run up the valley. Typical Calderdale run in that the first 2/3rds were uphill, the last 1/3rd was downhill, i saw some deer and it rained. Also got chased by a herd of sheep again, its getting embarrassing now.

So, my main thoughts from the JK apart from the fact that southern drivers are all prats are that i need to work on staying focused on 'easy' or 'boring' legs/courses and need to keep map contact at all times. Always. Also, im just not quick enough over runnable terrain, which i identified before the winter and was starting to rectify through reasonably high volumes and top quality interval sessions. However, the lack of volume/quality in my training for various reasons over the last few months has frustratingly caused me to go backwards in terms of speed. So i need to find a way of getting quicker without access to a training group who could push me that extra 5% i need during sessions. Hmm tricky.

JK relay. I could barely walk this morning and struggled to get out of bed. Watched everyone else sprinting around the holding pen before the start and thought bugger me im in for a tough time here. And so it proved. Navigationally i was perhaps 20 secs from perfect but physically i was a wreck. My legs were so heavy and unresponsive i could only watch and plod along as numerous young runners sped off into the distance across the fields and Shane, Dan and myself were left to punter around in their wake. It was like one of those dreams where you're trying to run but feel like you're running through treacle and just not getting anywhere.

JK classic. Starting in a snow storm lent some atmosphere to the proceedings and i was well up for a proper classic race. 1st bit of time loss was at 7 when i missed in the circle and had a look at one of the green bushes which would have been a much more logical control site than 5 slightly different looking trees in a forest. Kept it clean through to the spectator control and was pushing as hard as i could although my legs felt worringly unsprightly. Leaving the spectator control i lost the optimum direction and crossed between the 2nd and 3rd ponds rather than the 1st and 2nd gap i had planned. Consequently i crossed the hill through the rough open pretty close to no.20 and threw away about 1 min on the leg due to this loss of concentration/i was already bored of the course. Then at 19 id switched off again and knew i was betweent the 2 earthwalls but could find the control and threw away 2.5mins which is unforgivable on an area like this. So pretty frustrating as a clean run was possible and im just not fast enough to afford losing stupid bits of time like that.

JK middle. Was excited about racing on Leith Hill for the 1st time and it didnt disappoint. The plan was to ran fast across the easy bits and slow down for the technical bits, not exactly rocket science and the same as what everyone else must have thought. Was clean through the 1st 3, slowed down at the end of 4 to hit it, got 5 ok then lost contact coming out of 5 and ended up about 50metres to far south of 6 and lost about a minute. Didnt panic as i figured everyone else would make mistakes but then lost another minute when i couldnt figure out what the hell was going on within the circle at 12 and had to bail out and reattack it. Initially i was quite pleased when i finished as hadnt made any horrendous cock ups but then i saw the results and realised that even without the losses i would still have been way down.

JK sprint. Went cleanly through the 1st 7 then ran the wrong way out of 7 and ended up cocking up 8 by about a minute. Got scrappy after that and was generally not planning ahead enough and kept finding myself running into the dead end traps the planner had set. Basically should have planned the whole of each leg after leaving the previous. My lack of experience at running sprint races really showed today and time loss was about 2mins which is just silly on a sprint race.

Funny how its so hard to get out the door when you're doing less training. Didnt summon up the motivation till 17.45 but by then the sun was starting to set so the valleys were lit by a lovely golden glow. Went up the side of the valley, found some new paths and saw the herd of Roe deer again. Great stuff.

Bit of technical training at Royds Hall as i figured it was the closest thing to a southern forest i'd find around here. Really nice mostly open deciduous woodland with only a few patches of whippy trees to slow progress. Managed to stack it over a fallen tree in front of some walkers, oh well. Its great being on holiday, shame its when im supposed to be resting.

Oh dear, oh dear. I was a few mins late for Rhys on 1st leg handover as he'd missed out the final loop. This set the tone for the rest of the run. Was good through the 1st loop and nailed everything but at no.11 i arrived at a control which wasnt mine then couldnt locate my control despite it only being 20metres away (which i didnt realise). Lost a couple of mins here, got generally unmotivated and was quite scrappy and puntered round the rest of the course cursing Nails for making it so steep. Enjoyed the course and the area though and it was exciting watching the relay action happen. Afterwards found out i'd misspunched 3 (!) times but im 99% sure i went to all the right controls but i'd borrowed a superslow old SI card which presumably didnt register properly. And then i realised it was a 1:5000 map which explains most of my mistakes. Didnt matter much cos we were non comp in a 2 man team.

BUSA. Ran smoothly and in control but took a couple of unoptimum route choices, namely 2-3 and aimed off too much 28-29. Got a bit scrappy and hesitant through the butterflies and made a proper 30-40secs mistake 30-31. Was quite pleased when i finished but on reflection i didnt push hard enough and was running too defensively for most of it. Would have liked to have been a few mins quicker and with a bit more grit and determination i reckon it was easily achievable. A good lesson to learn. Big up to Nails for flying round, well impressive.

In a gap between the rain i fitted in some technical training on Harden Moor. Nice area, only run there once before so it was a proper navigational challenge. Lost a small amount of time running past a boulder i would have seen the control on. Pretty good though and felt alot better than yesterday, considered slipping some intervals in but figured it didnt really matter since my trainings been less than optimum recently for various reasons. Looking foward to a holiday now and to just enjoy the races.

Started some 1min reps down the bike path but my legs just werent up for it so i made a sensible decision and jacked it after 3. Most unlike me but what with the recent illnesses and the upcoming races i didnt want to risk anything. Think its nothing more than sleep deprivation having been staying up late (past 10pm!) as have been engrossed in a book about Coe and Ovett. Funny how a book about running really fast can make me run slower.

No long run yesterday but feeling a lot better so ran from Ogden on the way home. Up the roman road again, across to Warley reservoir, through the terrain to the Whinnney stones then back past the sailing club, along the wind turbines and freestyled it back across the moor to the roman road. Was raining throughout but for some reason i didnt mind i was loving being out in it. Spent about half the time running through soaking wet Pennine tussocks/bog, hmm lovely.

5 mins on x 1.30 rec x 4. Parked outside Ogden car park and ran up the old Roman road which eventually leads to the unmapped but complex mineworkings bit just off the O map. Across the road, a loop around the sailing club and reservoir and back across Ogden. Sooo windy it was difficult to keep moving and i was nearly blown into the reservoir in a couple of extra strong gusts.

Then tempo ran up across Erringdon Moor to Stoodley Pike monument (29mins) and back home through Mytholmroyd and the bike path/canal (37mins). First 25 mins of the run were tough as they were uphill into the teeth of a howling wind. Got into a good rhythm after the tempo section and finished well (past the Highland Cows, how random). | Was supposed to be doing Noon Stone fell race this weekend and i thought it was tommorrow but the fixtures booklet disagreed, doh! So instead i did some technical training on an area which is very sexy. Driving rain meant reading the map without magnification was tricky and hence i made a few mistakes. Gutted to miss what would have been awesome physical training, added to missing Ilkley Moor fell race last weekend = annoying. Really enjoyed the orienteering though. |
