Wednesday Jul 30

running 57:00 [3]
Dragged myself out for a run. Walked the last half a mile down the canal as totally couldnt be arsed running it. Felt a lot better than yesterday though so positive.

Tuesday Jul 29

running 25:00 [2]
Couldnt really be bothered. Seems like i can either use my brain effectively or run well, cant seem to do both. Today i used my brain lots and therefore ran slowly.

running 1:27:00 [3]
Up to Stoodley Pike where i was very glad of the strong wind so stood for a minute and cooled down. Came back past the coiners cottages and the ever boggy Erringen moor. Down through the nature reserve woods where i saw a large fox. Back over the spur to home. Felt knackered on the long climb to the pike but finished ok.

running 1:01:00 [3]
Some topless running on the moor. Lovely.

Saturday Jul 26

running 15:00 [2]
Warm up/down.
running 1:18:00 [5]
Turnslack fell race. Hot hot hot. Had a good start, even being 2nd onto the moor behind John Brown after about 5mins. Then it all started to go wrong. A few people came past me but i knew they would as they are quality runners. However, after about 15mins i was feeling the heat somewhat, by 35 mins at the turnaround i was feeling considerably worse and after that the wheels just came off completely. I had to walk up the 2 steep, rough, long climbs that came in the 2nd half and even got overtaken by 3 people. Usually in the 2nd half of a race im cutting every corner, pushing to the limit uphill, taking risks downhill and usually overtaking people but not today. I was staggering around like a drunk and feeling just as sick as if id downed a bottle of spirits before racing. Ive never been more pleased to finish a race, must have lost minutes over the 2nd half. Ah well, its a good thing its only ever this hot for 1 week out of 52 in Britain.

hot.

Wednesday Jul 23

running 32:00 [3]
12 mins warm up, rest is warm down. On the warm down route i came down through the woods above Brearley bridge and ran past a man chopping some wood with a big axe who im 98% sure is Eric Pollard off of Emmerdale. I dont watch such crap tv but ive seen him on the London marathon coverage as he is a runner. How exciting to see such a celebrity.
running 22:00 [5]
60 secs x 30 secs x 15. Tough work in the heat. Two enormous army planes scared the crap out of me flying what seemed like 50metres above my head on the moor.

running 1:30:00 [3]
Up to Stoodley Pike then dropped back through the nice looking woodland and up over the spur and home. Good pace and finished strongly.

running 1:00:00 [3]
Run on the moor, accessed via mroyd and wadsworth banks fields where i was chased by some inquisitive calves. Was mulling over the intro ive written for my dissertation and thought of something i should have put in whilst i was on top of Crow Hill so legged it back before i forgot.

Sunday Jul 20

running 20:00 [3]
Running in the direction of where the map started.
orienteering 40:00 [4]
Tech training at Strensall. Pretty good, made one mistake but relocated well. Ran it hard and without a compass as i forgot it. Watching the WOC relay it surprised me they used a tree in a forest as a control feature, looking at the video, no.7 on last leg appears to be a pine tree in the middle of a pine forest. All the runners seemed to spike it though. Could have been the presence of the tv camera next to it. Very exciting about the gold.

running 1:00:00 [2]
Run in the Yorkshire Wolds. Havent run there for a while, had forgotten how nice it is. Quite a few steep climbs out of the valleys. Was pacing a tempo run then we did some sprints approx 10-15 secs, which i lost. Something to work on then.

Friday Jul 18

running 1:01:00 [3]
Steady run up to Jerusalem Woods and over to Crow hill before coming back through the old town. Mizzling once i reached the moor but never cold.

Note
(rest day)
Got TBE jab so had a day off. Arm hurts quite a lot now.

Wednesday Jul 16

running 54:00 [5]
Widdop fell race. Good tough race with plenty of mud and tussocks and a proper sting in the tail. Lots of terrain running where i was reeling the leaders back in slightly and some fast running especially near the finish where they pulled away and i conceded i couldnt catch them so cruised into the finish. Very bleak and desolate moorland venue for the race on the Lancashire/Yoskshire border, i dont think its ever summer up there.
running 15:00 [3]
Warm up/down.

Tuesday Jul 15

running 37:00 [2]
Easy recovery run on the flat, it was really good to run easily by choice rather than cos knackered. I looked like someone off of neighbours when they jog round the corner of ramsey street with a soaking t-shirt when theyve blatantly just poured some water on themselves.

running 1:22:00 [3]
Went down the canal into the royd (15mins), started the tempo section at the foot of the climb up past the point wood. Carried on over Erringden moor, which was wet as usual, past coiners cottages to Stoodley Pike where i finished the tempo section and sensibly put on my caggle. Proceeded back to the royd the way the coiners fell race comes up then went straight up Wadsworth bank field, along the edge of the moor and back down the steep wood and canal. Legs felt awesome, even going up Wadsworth/Wicken Hill which is frickin steep after 70mins they were good. More proof that in order to do effective training one needs a job with no commute and little physical activity as all i did today was sit on my ass and revise.
running 25:00 [4]
tempo section where i unleashed the fury...

Sunday Jul 13

orienteering 1:30:00 [3]
Tech training at Hurstwood. Ran around and put out tapes then ran back around without stopping and collected them in (someone had run a course on them in the between time, i wasnt just doing it for the sake of it). Physically i felt good and technically i was pleased, made a couiple of small mistakes but it is unrelentingly technical and you cant relax for a second else you're screwed. Did some relocation practice second time round. Glorious summers day for it.

Saturday Jul 12

orienteering 1:09:00 [2]
Tech training on Harden Moor. The plan was to do trains with a matchplay type set up with 1 point if you spiked a control and 0 points if you hesitated at all. Lost count of the score (pretty sure i won, but then i had run the course a couple of months ago). Got stuck in some green at one point and disentangled myself only to find she'd disappeared rapidly into the distance (with the map). Good fun.

Thursday Jul 10

running 10:00 [2]
Warm up/down
orienteering 45:00 [4]
Woo woo, some orienteering. Dovestone evening event. Was so excited to have a map in my hand again, how sad i am. Was pretty hungry prior to running so settled on a cruisy/not racing pace but a tad harder than steady due to the nature of the terrain. The map was a little dodgy in places and the last third of the course was steep and rocky but it was well planned and only lost time muffing up the 2nd last one which was well further down the hill than shown. However, i then took advantage of this fact and pulled off a cunning route choice to the last one which appears to have been crucial. Cant wait to do some more orienteering...

Wednesday Jul 9

running 22:00 [2]
Warm up/down with a mate id pursueded to run. Only his 2nd ever fell race including last years when he was nearly sick afterwards and said he thought he was going to die on the course. He commented it 'wasnt too bad' this time.
running 39:00 [5]
Stirton fell race. Did 2.45mins quicker than last year but on a slightly different route, looking at the times from other people i reckon im running about the same/bit quicker than last year. Decided to go off as quick as poss but didnt quite manage a full 'northrop'. Was in 4th at the top of sharp haw, then went deliberately slowly on the descent cos t was a mudfest and i was wearing swoops. 3 people came past me then but i wasnt bothered as i caught 2 of them on the second ascent and then cruised into the finish. Lashing down with rain, couldnt see more than 5 metres in front higher up the hill. Bloody marvellous, just what Wednesday evenings are made for.

Being back in uni means having more than 1 hr/day of free time so i damn well utilised it.

running 1:32:00 [3]
Decided i really wanted to visit High Brown knoll so went up the Luddeden valley same as yesterday, came out on the moor about half way along and boshed/smashed through the terrain to the trig point and back via Tom Tittiman, Milk Churn Joan etc. Saw some walkers and was so surprised i nearly demanded to know what they were doing up there seeing how theres never anyone up there. In contrast to yesterday i felt great, which was nice.

Sunday Jul 6

running 1:00:00 [2]
Down the valley to Jerusalem woods then up onto the moor, along the side of crow hill and down through the steep woods and the canal. Hot and tired.

Saturday Jul 5

running 41:00 [3]
Warm up through the old town and warm down from the far point of the moor near the weird tower things emitting steam.
running 22:00 [5]
1.30 x 45 x 10. First 3 were uphill, next 7 were a bit uphill and in terrain.

running 36:00 [3]
Down the canal to Brearley bridge where i nipped onto the bike path into Mytholmroyd. Climbed out in a southerly direction and came back over the ridge ignoring the road closed sign because it is clearly not a road it is a footpath. Legs good.

Thursday Jul 3

running 1:02:00 [3]
As a creature of habit i pottered down the canal to Mytholmroyd, went up through the woods and Wadsworth Bank fields, steep gorse bit, Wicken Hill. Like this route because by the time you've done the climb onto the moor nearly 30mins have gone by which is half the run. Looped around and then descended back through Midgley. What a lovely run.

Wednesday Jul 2

running 40:00 [3]
In Leeds so did an old skool session, warmed up from Kirkstall Abbey and around Becketts Park. Had a dilemma when stopped to stretch, do i lie down and relax on the warm, freshly cut grass in the blazing sunshine for 20mins or do i run the session? Struggled with myself for a while then decided to get it over with, pleased i chose this option. Warmed down through a wood i cant remember the name of.
running 22:00 [5]
60sec x 30 sec x 15. Running on a flat smooth surface with no holes to stick your foot in it was easy to get the heart rate up so fairly killed myself on the efforts although i felt pretty sluggish. Then i had the promised lie down in the sun, it was great.
