Buck Wood CC. Had a fairly ok run, lost a couple of silly minutes when twice i ran up the wrong path cos i didnt check my compass (once a boulder on the ground was covered by the red line so i confused it for another). Was surprised to get totally rinsed by HH when i saw the results. Thought i was running pretty well (for me) at the start of Nov, ive either lost these gains or am currently more tired than i realised. Heart rate was about 10bpm below what would usually constitute racing and i never felt particulary fleet. A rest week (post monday) is in order methinks to find out what the reason might be.

Steady up onto Midgely Moor. Still plenty of snow about. For about a mile i was following the tracks of a dog/cat creature with no human footprints beside it. Im no ray mears but they were pretty big paw prints. All this talk on nopesport about wild cats in britain has made me paranoid. Theres planty of sheep to live off up there. Maybe the occasional runner too.

120/60 x 10 round some football pitches. Pretty much the dullest session ive ever done. Because it was on the flat i struggled to get the heart rate up and as was setting my own pace i lacked motivation. Need to get down the track for this sort of thing but it takes too much time to get there. Still, at least its over now.

Parked at the Shephards Rest Inn up from Tod and ran steadily up the hill to the top of the ridge then along till the monument on Stoodley and back down the same way. Freezing cold, must have been minus 10 or something with the wind chill.

Putting out controls and collecting them in afterwards. It was a looong day. I was sick of that muddy track out of the valley by the end of it.

Long tech course at Roeburndale. Wasnt reading the map enough at the start and so lost contact and 2mins evaporated (as usual). Bilbo had snuck past at this point so i chased him and caught him. Unfortunately, by this point because id climbed up and down so many wet, muddy slopes my map had become sodden and had torn clean in two (id wrongly assumed it was waterproof so hadnt taken a map bag). This meant i couldnt thumb the map at all as my compass went through the paper and so i was running on quick glimpses of the map. It got tricky because the course crossed the tear several times and i felt like i was trying to piece together a jigsaw whilst orienteering. The rough, slippy, slitheryness of the ground meant everyone was pretty much running at the same speed and i couldnt get away from Bilbo tlll the final hill when the ground had solidified. Turned out he'd mispunched, which was a shame.

Auld Lang Syne fell race. Was using this to get in an intense session which meant when the gun went i wasnt in race mode and forgot the cardinal rule of fell running which is to start off far too fast then just suck up the pain. Consequently, i started too slowly, got boxed in at the bottleneck cavalry charge type start and spent the first 2 miles trying to catch up all the time lost. Had a strong run after that and especially enjoyed the rougher bits of the course like the river crossings and the descent off the trig point. Had i not faffed at the start reckon i could have been 1min quicker. Lesson learned.
