Was supposed to be an easy spin after yesterday, but didn't feel like the race had taken too much out of me so joined in with the Alba Rosa A ride for about half an hour for a decent pace. As they peeled off in Rylstone to head towards Malham I carried on round Burnsall Fell and back along the valley. Lots of cyclists out today, hopefully weather stays dry for Tour de Yorkshire racing on the same roads next week.

Mountain biking race (Midlands XC #2) 1:29:19 intensity: (37 @1) + (4:34 @2) + (5:08 @3) + (48:24 @4) + (30:36 @5) 21.08 km (4:14 / km) +566m 3:44 / km

2nd race in Midlands XC series which ventured up to Park Springs in Sheffield. Constant rain during warm-up, course was pretty muddy, and I felt that I had a slow rear flat part way round warm-up lap so headed back to car to put some more air in, which held out during the race. Should have talked tactics with Mark a bit more as should have realised that course would bottle-neck very early on, and due to having a bad gridding having not ridden the first race in the series was slowed to a stop after a minute of racing! By the time everyone had got through the leaders well out of sight and I had a long line of people in front of me. The early part of the course didn't have much room to overtake but I made the most of the opportunities given on the top playing field. Enjoyed the opening lap trying to get past people, but by the time of the 2nd lap had the recurring problems of chain suck meaning I had to pedal backwards every 10 strokes or so to prevent chain getting jammed. This led to a number of profanities as I wasn't able to push myself, and rode the majority of the race at 80-90%. Had to stop a few times to sort chain out, which lost me a number of places. Ended up just inside the top 30 in the Sport category which is a long way from where I wanted to be, but happy to have completed course with relative ease having not done much on MTB this year. Wasn't able to stick with the 2 leaders from the Elite as they came past (including Cameron Orr - top 10 at Commonwealth Games a few weeks ago), but was able to stick with Giles Drake for a few mins on the final climb.
Need to work on a faster start to get a decent position as was getting held up quite badly.

Went out to join chaingang but too late to join at the start, so headed out on the route and latched on as they overtook me on the Burley bypass. Quickly realised my body wasn't fully recovered from yesterday and wasn't able to take any turns, so bailed out as we left Ilkley joined by Ben H (who also raced yesterday). Joined back on as they came back past the same place, was able to take a few turns, but only kept up back to Burley. Peeled off and road solo for the remaining time including an effort on SOTW after climbing East Chevin Rd.

Got in a few practice laps.

Cyclo-X race (Summer CX Series #1) 44:33 intensity: (2 @1) + (16 @2) + (11 @3) + (1:59 @4) + (42:05 @5) 13.21 km (3:22 / km) +127m 3:13 / km
ahr:164 max:171 shoes: Trek XO2

First race of the summer series at Newsome High School in Huddersfield. Deluge of rain an hour before the first start made the course very slippery and muddy, with the off-camber corners proving treacherous, with only a couple of the front guys able to ride these. Usual fast start was a bit of a shock to the system and suffered from an early stage. Settled in behind Mark Richmond for couple of laps, but lost time as I came off on the cambered sections. Caught a bit of time back up on the fast section up to the sandpit but lost all again on the 2nd lap as I hit the ground again despite running bike round, which lost me my leading club place to Ian Furlong. Got back past as we climbed into the school ground again, and remained upright for the remainder of the course. Gained a place on the final lap to pull up to 23rd - a few places lower than my best last year (15th) but an OK start considering I didn't feel great.

Better than nothing, but didn't get home till 9.30 due to distance having to travel.

Morning meetings meant this was just a short ride from school into work in the rain.

Later meetings than originally planned meant I only had time to go the short way back to school to pick Brontë up.
