Orienteering race (Jukola (Mikkeli)) 2:20:02 [5] ***** 14.68 km (9:32 / km)
27c

The one and the only, the Jukola. I was on the 3rd leg, the long night, but with our team it was dawn/light. Everybody was thinking this year will be rather easy, because it was located so close to the town, but we already saw during the girls' Venla race, that it won't be so easy. Well, a lot of trails close to the horse track, also challenging orienteering as well. In the Jukola there will always be trails, when 1412 teams are running seven legs, so almost 10,000 runners plus almost 4,000 ladies running in the same terrain. So, it's never easy to find the right path.

I was already in the changing area, when I decided I don't need my headlamp, so I gave it to the second leg runner at the change. When running to the first control, the lamp gave-up looked like a mistake, but after that it was not any problem, so it was probably a good decision. At the first control, I checked the wrong gaffling and lost one minute there, then it was good three kilometers. I almost made a mistake at the control #6 but I had better understanding of the map than others close to the control, and I don't think I lost anything remarkable. The trick of the year was that our control #8 was the #1 in the first leg! So they needed to run 3K's to the first control! At the control #9 I lost one minute when looking for the control too much on the uphill. At the next control I was wondering why everybody else were running too much north, whne I was sure I was just running right to the control. There were a three controls gaffling, but still I think I did good work and some else went to the wrong controls, when I hit the control right a way. At the #13 I checked again all the gaffling controls and lost one minute. Then a really good leg especially a long leg from the #16 to the #17 I'm very pleased even I was getting tired after 1:30 running. It was easy to notice I was tired but got some more power, when everybody else on the 3rd leg was at least as tired. A small route choice mistake at the #21 and then at #23 approx. two minutes mistake, when I couldn't find the boulders at quite easy spot. Then it was just running to the finish with tired legs.

My time was 2:20:02. I had promised earlier on Saturday, it will take 2:20, so I was quite(!!!!) close. I started at 1096 and finished at 1020, so I gained 76 positions. But mostly I'm happy I could run 15K's almost all the time and wasn't even too tired at the finish. And even more pleased when I started at 3:10am and finished 5:30am, and I was sleeping maybe two hours before the start. I lost some positions at the end with fast running area, but the orienteering was great, just five minutes mistakes at 15K's is great for me. Our Otaniemen Jyllääjät 2nd team was also doing great. The 2nd team is typically at the position over 1,000, but now we finished 941th. The 1st, 3rd (so me) and 5th legs were good and everybody made solid runs.

Orienteering (Local Meet (Heinlahti)) 49:08 [2] *** 4.6 km (10:41 / km)
13c

The last training before THE Jukola. I didn't take the longest course, want to save all the energy for the early Sunday morning. Much better run than I have done lately. One mistake with the control and one with the route choice. Now just rest until to the weekend, everything should be ready.
