Jumbo Holdsworth Mountain Race
Felt pretty good during warm up. Started out at a good pace, and felt comfortable. Managed to get a small stone in my shoe after about 10mins, but didnt want to stop and loose time. Forgot about the 1 person bridge, so was in 3rd place, and had to wait at there for about a min while the 2 guys in front crossed. Went hard to try and catch them, but they held a 30sec lead to Atiwakatu hut. I stopped there and took off my shoe to get the stone out, dropping another 30secs. But at the point I was already over a min behind my time from last year, which I was a bit surprised about, cos thought I was going well (although I did drop about 20-30secs when I ran down the wrong track). Started the climb up Jumbo (forgot how damn hard this hill is!) slow going, and was about 4min slower on the climb than last time :(. Once we got into the open, it was frickin cold! was ok until I got upto the ridge line, then the wind was gusting above 100km/hr with driving rain. Struggled to stay upright and footing was a challenge on the wet slippery rocks. Lost the markers about 3/4 of the way, and got stuck in some swampy bit, then bashed up through some vegetation to get back upto the track. Reckon I lost about 2mins there. After returning to the track I tried to push up the last few climbs, and managed to catch up 2nd place. Flew past him on the downhill, and continued to push and try and catch 1st place. Had a big fall at powell hut and crashed down the stairs, hurting my back, tailbone and hand. Tried to shake it off and keep going.Went hard all the way, but got to the finish in 2nd place :( Finished 1min 20sec down, so I got back 6min from the top of Jumbo. Overall was 11min slower than last time, although these conditions were worse, I was pretty gutted to be so far behind :(

Note
slept:7.0 (injured) (rest day)

Feeling very tired today, also had quite a bit of travelling. Got to Taupo all excited about training, but knee tendons aching. So thought it be best to give them a rest. Guess the hard ground from yesterday made the knees worse than usual (and in combination with the wknd of racing)

Note

Absolutely smashed from the weekend. Finished work early, went to the motel and just crashed. Slept for 4 hours. Didnt realise I was so tired from it all. Guess the thursday night disaster took more out of me.
