orienteering race 12:50 [3] 1.4 km (9:10 / km)
10c

easy sprint, just slow - forgot to turn on garmin
got to wake up all the controls - almost didn't notice the missing beep at 1, went back and then stopped at all the other controls to wait for the beep
map
3 PM

orienteering 24:06 [3] 2.78 km (8:39 / km) +37m 8:07 / km
12c

sprint a - 2 huge mistakes, controls 3 and 4
probably even slower
3 - poor route choice to start, then ran right by the re-entrant
4 - way overran, saw 5, turned around and went back to 4
4 PM

orienteering race (score-o) 56:19 [4] 5.34 km (10:33 / km) +44m 10:08 / km
21c

this was a lot of fun - misjudged what I could do - should have picked up 25 and maybe 22

wonderful meal afterwards - a great day and a lot of fun

orienteering race 22:15 [3] 2.87 km (7:45 / km) +15m 7:33 / km

just very out of shape and somewhat lazy

lucky navigation was trivial as I was very distracted and probably not able to focus

orienteering race 1:50:54 [4] 6.2 km (17:53 / km) +290m 14:30 / km
19c

once again, got home and results were already posted!
O-cross - no battery left in Garmin
map 1 of 3
map 2 of 3
map 3 of 3
- shorter race than yesterday, almost the exact same time - just nothing left after the first 3 races.

map 1 -BA
1 - let the fast folks go ahead, and just walked to the control - arrived as the line to punch ended

2 - trails to the last 100 meters, went a bit too high, then corrected and came back

3 - stayed low and contoured around hill - avoided a lot of climb

4 - just straight up re-entrant (lots of trees and roots to pull my self up) then right into control

5 - trails - already out of energy :(

6 - mostly trail, then open area, checking off black x, down the ravine and along the stream to the control

7 - back up the ravine, along the trail (cutting the big corners) and down the death defying slope - stopped my self by hitting a big tree - held on to tree to punch - and took a more sensible route up

8 - more or less along the trails

finish 1 - should have taken road, map exchange was across the road

map 2 AB
1 - right of bearing a bit - saw trail and easy into control

2- paths all the way - checked out 6 - know it was visible from trail, clambered down to control

3 - dropped right down and took trail - planned route to 4, and almost forgot to stop at 3 - realized shortly after passing where 2 on map 1 was, so knew my location - trudged up the hill to 3

4 - headed down and along swamp - easier climb up and trail to 4 - stopped early, but realized paths were too close and kept going to control

5 - same as on map 1 - same route

6 - trails at first, hesitated where I left the path - look for the route through the green that others must have opened up for me. found it and barelled down, coming out right at control

7 - up the hill again - losing my glasses and spending a minute or so hunting for them (had them in my hand because they were so fogged up) - around ravine on trail, then across saddle to same number 7 as first map - same route in and out

8 - a bit less on the trail this time as I knew I could get through these woods

more on the road to finish - map exchange

map 3 change of scale threw me
1 -just followed the spur out - easy to see where control must be
2 - screwed this up again (same as on sprint) down hill, across the 3 bridges, across the next bridge and up the trail - think the scale threw me and I didn't see the left turn - so just trudged up the hill far to the north of where i wanted to be - knew what I had done as I neared the road - used the towers to navigate and down to the control from above the trail

3 - Anne T and I arrived at 2 together so we pushed the last bit hard - map in pants, barrel down the ravine - ran up the stream a bit and took a nicer route up the other side - alin urging me along - not much left in legs to get to go control, found a little bit in legs for finish.

orienteering 1:50:16 [4] 8.26 km (13:21 / km) +340m 11:04 / km

map with routes

1 - took right hand route because it seemed like less climb - took it slowly and stayed in contact. should have gone above stream at end to rough open and attacked from above

2 - was south of where I intended to go, but the vegetation gave it away - nasty climb down muddy hill to reach control

3 - almost went wrong way at stream - should have used trail until last bit of swamp - stayed to west to get nice attackpoint from trail junction

4 - seemed that staying further north (closer to stream) was more runnable (which was clear on the map) - stopped for water

5 - still can't figure out how I got off the trail and messed this up so badly - this mistake cost me a medal

6 - not sure that this was a good route as it was so far around - but was easy running, and let me relax a bit - think it helped me focus again later.

7 - climbed a few meters too high, but the climb was much easier than straight up from the stream

8 - easy, but running out of steam

9 - camelback came undone and couldn't seem to get it on again - was worried about hitting the right re-entrant if i got off bearing but worked out fine

10 - just trails (would never have seen the top of the trail if there wasn't a control at the junction - spotted control early

11 - down and up the same damn ravine - tucked map in my shorts at 10 so I could use my hands to get up - not much left at the finish after that climb

i am really bad at climb - i think this is where the smoking really kills me

orienteering race (sprint) 22:11 [4] 1.81 km (12:14 / km) +90m 9:48 / km
10c

a horrible start to glof- map with route, crappy scanner
a tactical error 1-2: ran way too hard up the hill to 2 and never recovered
8: anne t. was right behind me, so leaving 7 I just ran up the stream - unfortunately it was the wrong stream - added a fair bit of climb as well as distance since I didn't recover from it very well.
9: headed off in the wrong direction ?!?
3 PM

orienteering race 1:12:45 [3] 4.82 km (15:05 / km) +131m 13:17 / km
12c

another bad race :(
map with route, crappy scanner again
1 -slow as I wasn't sure I was reading the map right
2 - very slow the last 50 meters as i was having problems making sense of the map - turned out to be a good idea
3 - went south to avoid some climb, but way over corrected and misread where i hit the trail - building to the north gave it away, but still managed to go past the control concealed behind a very small rock
4 - just a trudge uphill - misread control sheet and thought I was at wrong control - stopped and went back and of course it was the right one
5 - left the trail later than I intended to and just got myself very confused - relocated, but headed off in wrong direction - maybe I took a bearing on 2 not 5, missed 5 again, decided to relocate from down the hill - saw the swamp, then the trail, went back to 2, and carefully to 5 - 20 minutes! and now very tired
6 - decided to take a safe route and got there fine
7 - again misread where i hit the trail - distracted by many people around - when I realized I was in wrong area, headed south till I could see the trail and followed the countours into 7
8 - straight - hopped behing the control after puching to let Jeff T. go by
9,10 just straight
11 - took slightly shorter route through saddle as that would point me right at the gap in the cliffs - worked great
12 - ran smack into some undergrowth that I wasn't getting through, detoured around - almost missed path to parking lot
7 PM

Note

pretty cool to get home and see my splits already posted! THX Valerie.
