Orienteering 1:37:26 [3] 14.0 km (6:58 / km) +500m 5:54 / km

Jukola is here! My first time, don't know why it's taken me this long. An amazing event - orienteering Glastonbury (I was probably on the same amount of drugs ;))

Willy started steadily (67th) after threatening a top 30 until a 2 min slip up, and Josh and Pierre battled to get us through the 'night' without blowing it and the Swedes pulled us up from 100th to 70th (special props to Georg and Hugo, the 'kids' for smashing it). So, I was off on last leg in 70th.

Not really nervous beforehand, once I'd decided to run I was pretty chilled. Most of the work is already done by last leg, you just need to not fuck it up!
Much more comfortable in Scandi terrain now, and mentally much stronger than when I was younger. Chest infection was obviouslky going to limit my physical performance so made decision never to push into the red.

Started off with 2 minute gap ahead, and 3 teams within 10 seconds behind, and 2 more 90 seconds back. One guy tanked it past me on the way to the start but I fcoused on my job as I knew the first was forked.
Clean through the first 2, gaining 2 places then got confused by a huge elephant track and started searching too early for 3. Eventually decided to bail out to the path and realised my error. 4 minutes binned, shit, down to 75th.
Rushed out of the control and started down the wrong track, realising when I checked my compass and had to alter my planned route entirely, going to the right of the line and OOB area. Control spiked but unnecessary time loss maybe 90 seconds +, but made up 3 places somehow! Clean on next few, taking my time to settle and get a rhythm. Still no forkings as I'd been told by Goran.

Lost time on 7, not enough of a plan and had to guess position. Was wrong but realised quickly so no thrashing about. 90 seconds binned maybe. Was in danger at this point of having a mare, so told myself to settle down and simplify better. Confidence changer when nailing the bearing through green to the path for an uber safe route to 8 (fasftest times went over the hill but I'm comfortable with my choice as many team went this way, and it gave me time to plan ahead).

A bit over safe into 9 but gained a place, diverted away to check a control on the way to 10 despite being exactly where I though (silly 20 seconds thrown away), and nailed 11 albeit slowly but I'd survived the tricky gaffled green section unscathed, and made up another 2 places by common control 13. Next few were straightforward, moving steadily and taking my time to read the map, a bit over safe to 16 and almost blew it but caught myself drifting left (30 seconds I reckon).

Next long leg I decided to go straight despite the lad I'd caught going R round the track - I figured it wasn't worth the track run for myself as I couldn't push it, so straight was great. A little safe through the initial green but popped out onot the track ahead of yon laddo, and nailed the control.

He beat me into the control but ignored him through next gaffle, spiked mine and the next common, splits good here, and I was confident again, speed control was stable. Nice!

Safe line into 21, R of the line looking for the track bend and in. Over Savedalens here but he was right behind and moving fast. Bit of a poor exit route in hindsight, and had to slow right down to readjust. A little lucky here if honest, Savedalens more in control.

Nearly done now, and outmanouvered him though running slower through next 2, then went right on 25, which was slower and he'd gone. Drat. Died a bit on the run in and thought I'd had a bad run until seeing Josh, Willy, Cat and Georg who all looked delighted - I'd actually made up a place overall!

69th!!! The best the club has done in about 25 years!! For many teams, this would not be a big deal but it is for us, and we were all buzzing!!

Fact is, I wasn't brilliant but got the job I was required to do done - don't lose places! I'd like to have been fully healthy but there you go. I stabilised after a bad start and after 7 I'm pretty happy with my run and mentality - I'm no world beater but I've improved a lot in the last year and can be relied upon at the level the club is competing at. More improvements ahead I hope - top 60 next year!? Also need to be better at 10Mila, we dropped to 78th after being in 62nd after 7 legs. We're a young team (me not so much!) who need to improve but a full strength team is capable of much better. Looking forward to going again next year.

First though, get this chest sorted.

Event: Jukola 2017

Orienteering 20:00 [3] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

Easy orienteering with Jonny following. The orienteering itself was good and stable, the chest was iffy but bearable. Decided to race, as the alternative was to run earlier in the 2nd team which would've meant more people around and more temptation to push too hard physically. Game on.

Running 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Very easy trotting with the boys in super hot Joensuu. Stiff after sitting on a plane, bus and boat for 24 hours! Chest tight still, been on antibiotics since Monday
