Note

Does anyone want to make up a relay team for BOC? WCH barely have anyone going, but I want to run in the relay (even if non competitive). Not remotely bothered by standard etc, lets just get involved! Reply by 4th May

Orienteering 2:21:24 [3] 19.34 km (7:19 / km) +270m 6:50 / km

Long night.

A steady enough 1st leg from Dima (77th) turned into a bleedin disaster on the next 2 legs (mistakes and injuries). Was a bit down before I set off in 175th (!) but decided to try and enjoy it.

Never settled though, forcing it and rushing it, not disciplined to stop and check when unsure. Missed on 1 and 2 (3-4 minutes total). Told myself to get it together, and got the next 3 ok, gradually increasing pace, picking up a lot of runners. Promptly made a total pigs ear of 6, running too fast mostly. Needed to take more time early on to see all options.

So I was with a small group now, long leg time. Had already decided to go Left - all but one of the group went another way. One guy followed me and informed me along the leg "I can't read maps" - Ha! Focusing well, aiming for power lines, but the moment I couldnt see them when I was expecting them I totally panicked and went irrational. Blundered along until I intercepted the guys I was previously with who were going straight but swinging left to the power lines. Compunded it by missing in the circle. Fy Fan. I picked a good route but my shaky confidence blew it. A t least 10 minutes down the pan.

That was as bad as it got fortunately. Wobbling a bit on shattered confidence, trying to piece it back together. In a big group now, but they were so slow, kept being at the front without trying. 2nd longer leg, went left (once again, noone else went my way, only this time they were much quicker).

Managed to recatch the group 2 controls later and next few went better, once again ending up at the front, once again going one way, and the group going another way (basically, I needed to be a fuck load smarter here, realise there was only one technical control left, sit in, and then leg it after that - just plain dumn, brain had gone, legs were struggling)

Pigs ear of an ok route. Got round the rest but was flagging and cramping (unlike me).

Dragged us up to 159th but a lot fo those were a gimme. Pretty fucking disappointed when I finished. Tried too hard, forcing it, trying to make up places rather than just orienteering and letting it happen.Physically finding the long O races pretty hard at the mo, but shape will come. Was a tough night this year.

Need to get my shit together - O this year has been a mix of very competent and very incompetent, often days apart. I am still new to Scandi relays so its all valuable learning. Want to do better.

Team managed to pull us up to 105th overall, which was underwhelming after 78th last year. Not our strongest team but the leg selections were not good - some guys were put on legs they werent ready for. I shoukldve done better on my leg, I wasnt mentally prepared for going out so far down and didnt cope with it. Very annoyed with myself.

BRING ON JUKOLA.
