Fell Race (Wasdale) 3:59:55 [4] 20.65 mi (11:37 / mi) +2740m 8:14 / mi

Not done this beast since the hot Champs race in 2013. But, with Buttermere under my belt, seemed like a good idea. Wrote down Si Booths splits from 2013 when he ran 4 seconds under 4 hours - sub 4 the target. PB was 4.11.

Wil started us even further back from the usual start than last year haha! 80 seconds I reckon. Felt like a decent solid pace to Whin Rigg and at the time thought I was few minutes down on my target. Hmm. Looking at it now, I think we were fine!

Got descent line wrong to start but cut across from the shitty gully eventually and settled into a steady lope along and up to Yewbarrow (4 minute sup on schedule). Group settled into me, James Harris, Pete Davies and Sam Watson over Pots of Ashness. Got a small gap going into the mist but dropped too early looking for the trod round Black Crag so they recaught me as I skittered about controuting on scree and crags. Doh.

Anyway, on Pillar we were sitting pretty 3 mins up on schedule. Ran pretty fast down to Black Sail Pass, dropped James. Kept the trot on round Moses Trod (usually tired by now) and climbed Gable well, if quite steadily. Topped out in 2.50, 2 mins up on schedule. Me and Sam had pulled out a small gap on Pete now.

Didnt descend great, needed a recce really. Sam hitting the path to Esk Hause hard but managed to keep my rhythm and reel him back in. Ran most of the way to Esk Hause but definitely tiring now, and wondering how to beat Sam, a noted descender. Hit Esk Hause in 3.17, so a minute up.

Big surge from Sam now, managed to ride it out and made my own effort across to the Pike, getting a very small gap by the top (3.40, held the minute) and just went for it down the tourist path as hard as I could dare, dodging tourists and taking a few risks. Hit Lingmell and risked a glance back, and Sam was pretty close. Decided to just leather it as fast as I dared and if he went past, so be it.

Over the stile in 1st (didnt look at my split!), Charmian says "He's in sight" so just running and running until a final look back shows clear ground. Phew. Kept pushing and hit the finish in 3.59.55 - result! That extra 80 second run out nearly cost me but Ill take it. A second faster than the scheudle I used.

The cramp monster had got Sam after he gave it everything to reel me in, and Pete Davies went past him for 2nd.
Took 1st team too with James Lowe, nice. Enjoyed it 100% more than Buttermere.

A good day out, pleased with the win and sub 4. Will ahve ti run faster in the future though, winning time nothing special but a step in the right direction and a confidence boost.

Leg 2 BG support of Kilian Jornet, with Chris Arthur. Standard BG leg really, just at a good pace. Enjoyed it, and unsurprisingly, he took an hour off Billy's record. Chapeau.

Nice chap.
