Wednesday May 31

Bicycling (Ascutney Mtn loop+) 3:10:24 [3]58.0 mi (3:16 / mi)
To Cavendish, then the river run to Downers and up around Ascutney. Saw a bull moose as I went thru Gassets. Almost rear-ended a corvette that stopped in front of me to take a look.

Warm humid day, but really nice ride. Route has a couple of long sections along side rivers that are really pretty. Also, going along river bottoms means you're not climbing over the ridges.

10 mile splits: 33/28/30/32/(34 Chester hill) avg 18.3

Tuesday May 30

Bicycling (Windham loop) 3:02:00 [3]48.4 mi (3:45 / mi) +1200m 2:10 / km
SW Route into the hills thru Grafton, West Townshend, Windham and back to Chester. Wind from SW until return, then shifted around unfavorably. Very hilly route, especially climbing up to Windham. Hot and muggy -- where did this come from?

Saw a big, dead porcupine by the shoulder. No, I didn't run over it.

Note
Was at Karen's wedding over the weekend in Scotland. Great affair in a castle estate. Only 15 miles from the Scotish relays in Banchory.

Thursday May 25

Bicycling (Horseshoe Acres) 1:10:13 [3]20.0 mi (3:30 / mi) +550m 2:01 / km
Early morning ride; cold at 34F. Fingers froze and the rest wasn't very warm, either.
Out 40/back 30

Wednesday May 24

Bicycling hills (Appalachian Gap) 1:09:00 [3]14.5 mi (4:44 / mi) +600m 2:37 / km
From Waitsfield up to crest of Green Mtns at Appalachian Gap, 2373'. Grind all the way, particulary the last three miles past Mad River Glen. Then precipitous descent down through switchbacks. Felt like the old days looking down a ski jump in-run. Didn't let loose until I got down on the flatter part.

Up 50/down 18 (smoking the brakes)

Tuesday May 23

Bicycling tempo (Benchmark ride) 1:05:23 [4]22.0 mi (2:58 / mi) +550m 1:43 / km
Rte 103 to highway and back. Gusty wind from NW made it fast going out, work coming back.

Out 28:52/back 36:30 -- 20.2

Sunday May 21

Bicycling (Gassets loop) 1:07:09 [3]19.4 mi (3:27 / mi)
Morning ride. Cool, S breeze built up. Sore, felt slow.

Saturday May 20

O-course Training (Mt Snow) 2:00:00 [2]5.0 mi (24:00 / mi)

Friday May 19

O-course Training (Mt Snow) 2:00:00 [1]4.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
Scouting area for AR race with Tracey. Rain all day -- what's new?

Thursday May 18

Bicycling (Horseshoe Acres) 1:02:54 [3]20.0 mi (3:08 / mi) +500m 1:49 / km
Right after eating dinner. Note to self -- wait a little while next time.

Wednesday May 17

Bicycling warm up/down (Tp/from Springfield) 39:30 [3]10.8 mi (3:38 / mi)
Up and over Chester hill on rte 11. Circuit starts at Mickey D's.
Bicycling (Ascutney Mtn loop) 2:08:35 [3]40.5 mi (3:09 / mi)
First day in a week without (almost) rain. Long loop avoiding almost all the hills. From Springfield out 10 to 106 and N to Reading. Then E on 44 and 44A around Ascutney. Back on 5 along the CT River. Nice section through open farms. Then short run up 11 to start.

Hit rain coming down 5 so that messed things up a bit. Legs felt ok, although still tired from the weekend. Really didn't push as I was checking the route out for the first time. Definitely worth doing regularly.
18.9 mph

Saw a beaver waddling down the side of the road. He was being shadowed by a couple who apparently wanted to make sure it didn't wander out into the rare traffic.

Saturday May 13

Event: Big Muddy Rogaine III

O - competition race (Big Muddy Rogaine) 22:46:00 [3]67 km (20:23 / km)
US Champs with Glen Brake. Moved steadily for whole time, no nav errors. Moderate hills throughout with grass and sparse tree cover. Good travel except sections of rocky scree. Made good time at night. Even fell asleep while walking early Sunday morning -- was dozing and following Glen's footsteps. Woke as I headed towards a ditch.

No running on Sunday due to blister on one heel. Also pretty tired from lots of hills. So we held back a bit to not totally wipe us out.

1st S-vet, probably 5 or 6th overall.

Wednesday May 10

Bicycling tempo (Benchmark ride) 1:05:05 [5]22.0 mi (2:57 / mi) +550m 1:42 / km
Hard tempo ride down rte 103 to I-91 and back. No real wind so just had to fight the rolling hills and the final rise back up rte 11. Used the aerobars for 95% of the ride; felt comfortable hammering the hills.

Very happy with time, first time breaking 20 mph on this long a ride.

Out 30:40/back 34:24 -- 20.3 mph
C • Awesome dude! 1

Monday May 8

Bicycling (Horseshoe Acres) 1:03:00 [3]20.0 mi (3:08 / mi)
Wanted to tackle Terrible Mtn today, but not enough time so stopped at Horshoe Acres. Good run, but legs felt heavy at first. Best time by 3 min; still targeting to get under 1 hour.
Out 36/back 27

Sunday May 7

O - competition race (West Point Green) 1:12:35 [5]5.9 km (12:18 / km)
Trouble with #4, couldn't find the right root stock; lost a couple minutes. Then end of e-punch snapped off, so I started punching the map. Blew next to last control by drifting L; had to correct with a 300m lateral run across the hillside. Fortunately, everyone else had even bigger problems: won M-55 both days.
C • Epunch 4
Bicycling (West Point) 47:30 [3]14.6 mi (3:14 / mi)
Quick ride up and down length of 293 after orienteering. Nice road with really wide shoulders and smooth surface; long rolling hills. Felt good, but not a day for a long ride.

Green 2X - Splits

Saturday May 6

Event: West Point A meet

O - competition race (West Point Green) 1:04:28 [5]4.93 km (13:05 / km)
Good run until water stop in middle. Backhanded cup into trash and thumb compass went flying off my finger into woods. Had to search for it and cadet spotted where it went. Also couldn't find Go control hidden behind construction vehicle.
Bicycling (Harriman) 1:40:00 [3]26.4 mi (3:46 / mi)
Bike ride with Bernie Bretton and Jim Mertz after o-meet. From Suffern to Sloatsburg, then up 7 Lakes Drive to Lake Welch Dr. Then across and down off plateau to 202 and back to Suffern. Good ride.

Green X - Splits

Friday May 5

Bicycling tempo (Benchmark ride) 1:10:32 [4]*** 22.0 mi (3:13 / mi) +550m 1:51 / km
spiked:19/
Sunrise ride down Rt 103. Okay until I hit fog down near the river and everything disappeared. Felt good going down, but legs started to burn on the way back.
Out 32:33/back 37:59 -- 18.7
Bicycling (Gassets) 1:04:00 [3]19.2 mi (3:19 / mi)
Afternoon ride. Nice warm day without being hot.
10 mi @ 34

Thursday May 4

Note
Nothing today, either, 14 hour day. Did pick up the bike with new bars. Will try tomorrow.

Wednesday May 3

Note
Not time today for training, so dropped bike off at shop for 500 mi tuneup and to get aerobars installed.

Got home to find 3/4 of a turkey carcass in the back field -- actually just the head was missing. Looks like it got tackled by fox and the neck snapped off. They ran off with the wrong end, as what was left was at least 10#.

Get out the road kill cookbook!

Tuesday May 2

Bicycling tempo (1/2 benchmark ride) 39:00 [3]12.6 mi (3:05 / mi)
RAIN! Lousy weather, but got to train for this, too. Down in ok time (34:18), despite puddles and wet road. Blew rear tire about a mile into the return leg. Installed a new tube and that blew at the stem. So put a patch on the first tire and reinstalled it. Pumped it up, but couldn't get much pressure in it. Was about to try riding on a really soft tire, when an SUV stopped and offered help. Since I was drenched and just starting to go hypo, accepted the graciously offered ride home. Took a while under a hot shower to thaw out.

Action item: get a new pump.
C • Bummer! I thought you had some... 3

Monday May 1

Bicycling (Grafton/Saxtons River) 1:40:00 [3]29.7 mi (3:22 / mi)
Back via Pleasant Valley Rd. Windy at times from E. Bit tired from weekend, flushed out the toxins with the ride and a soak afterwards.
10 mi splits: 37/34/29
