O - competition race (Shaver Lake CA) 23:49:00 [3] 58.0 km (24:38 / km) +2400m 20:25 / km

NA Champs rogaine with Charlie Leonard. Went well considering we didn’t run for nearly all the race. I was taking it easy on the hamstring so mostly hiking except for the last 2 hours.

Were 2nd supervet to a couple Aussies and 1st North Americans in the class, I think 4th overall.

Had gps watch in a sealed bag to capture the track, but it died after 19 hours and missed getting the track for a control we missed because all sorts of extra roads had been cut that weren’t updated on the map. Totally confusing situation. Figured the rest of the distance and added it in.

Leg was okay for 18 hours with the help of a hiking pole, but then started protesting a little.

More: did the south section first, covering the bare rock and cliffy segments which were fun, but a little slow in the tricky spots. Then into the northwest woods at night. Skipped the northeast because of elevation gain, distance and spread between controls.

Some areas thick knee/waist high vegetation. Very dense and a little scratchy. Sections I couldn’t push through and walked across the top of the bushes, feet never getting down to touch the ground.

Could not find 503 despite no doubt being within a few dozen meters and attacking from the hilltop to the north. Just too flat and thick. Other problem was 701 in that area with extra roads.

Towards the end we were counting down the clock and swept a bunch of controls we had left near the hash house: 508, 402, 502, 302, 201 and 307, all within the last 2 hours. Missed finding marshy 202 in the rush but probably could have with the 10 minutes we had to spare.

Weather was gorgeous, clear and 70’s in the day and dropping into the 30’s overnight. Had enough clothes for that and kept moving.
