Tiomila leg 8.

Tracking here http://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2014TmilaH8/

Map with my route http://maps.fvo.org.uk/show_map.php?user=grahamgri...

Team ran well through the night, and Johan L sent me out in 5th place, in touch with the leaders. Ran like hell at the start behind Johan Runesson, who was running like hell behind Jonas Leandersson (although I didn't see Jonas at this point). First control was very green and very strange, but only lost a couple of seconds. Chased Johan up and over to 2, could see other lights in front. Same to 3, but through the marsh I peeled right a bit - straighter to my forking. Punched just behind Oysten Kvaal here, and tucked in behind him and Johan across to 4. We were too far left, and it was very green, and I have to say I found the control partially by luck! Kvaal punched just behind, but Johan didn't find it straight away.
5 was easy, then a long track leg to 6. Oystein got a better line out of 5, so I let him choose the route, and followed him round the track. Could see lights in the distance in front and behind. The speed was very high, and climbing up the track to 6 I made a small miscalculation about where I entered the forest, and I made a 30s mistake. Luckily I corrected before GBG or GMOK caught me again, and then I tried to run fast to catch Oystein again. 7 went well, 8 was tricky getting down to the path, and I took a straighter line up the hill to the control (5s hesitation at the top).
I took a very good line out of 9 and passed Jonas, and gained some time on Oystein, and pushed hard along the track and open area to catch him. Then was a really technical forked area, lower visibility than the map would suggest. Jonas had the other forking, and I just about had Oystein's back out from 12. He hesitated passing the marsh before 13, so I took the lead in the 'group' again. We were just ahead of Jonas at 14 after the forking, and took a pretty bad line through the very rough green (over the hill might have been better - lost about 30s to Thierry here). After that the course was mostly straight, and the 3 of us ran pretty closely to the finish. I pushed the pace on the road to 18, then Oystein lead around 19-21 including a really good route choice to 21 where we seem to have taken time out of almost everybody else including Thierry (about 30s). Jonas took over there, and lead us through the lightening fast terrain almost all the way to the finish. He was running really fast, and I was starting to get very tired and to have some problems following on the way to 24 (with Oystein just behind me). Jonas started going straight to 27, but then changed his mind. I carried in straight as there was an elephant track, and actually caught up with him again at the control. Then it was a tough climb up to 28. I kept a good tempo up the hill, but then after the climb my legs (and brain) were jelly. Jonas had the other forking, and he got a 10s lead ahead of me and Oystein. We (me and Oystein) then missed the 2nd last control by about 20s, and I came into the finish just behind him to change over in 4th place, 2:07 behind Thierry and 39s behind 2nd placed Jonas.

I had the 4th best time on the leg 1:55 behind Thierry, which is about the closest I have ever come to him I think! Without the small mistake at the end it would have been the 2nd fastest time.

Vojtech and Roman then did their jobs to hold us in 4th place, which is an IFK Mora record since 1960s!

A good team performance - 10 good runs, including several very good ones!

IFK Mora relay training. Start was ludicrously fast - I was 50m behind after 400m running, but I got back to the front after 2-3 controls and stayed there. Running with Johan and Honkan in the beginning, then I guess Honkan had a longer forking at 4 so didn't see him again. Was running along quite a lot, but Johan kept appearing at every control! I made a small mistake at the 12th and he got in front, but I took a better line to 14 and got back ahead, and just kept it to the finish.
