Hill/Fell running race 2:51:00 intensity: (12:00 @1) + (8:00 @2) + (19:00 @3) + (52:00 @4) + (1:20:00 @5) 30.6 km (5:35 / km)

Pentland Skyline. 3rd. 2:30:11

First off, what an awesome race! Brutally tough with so many (steep) climbs - even if most of them aren't that long. I tried to pace it so that I would have energy left for the last 30 mins, but I clearly didn't manage that very well.

Started off comfortably with Tom Owens, with John Yells setting the pace. Tom decided to bridge the gap off Allermuir, but I stayed comfortable waiting for the big climbs to start. Ali Masson caught me coming off Castlelaw, and we then ran 'together' for quite a while. He took Turnhouse and Carnethy a big harder than I would have liked, but I hung on and was rewarded with his better lines catching Tom and John by Scald Law. We were running in a group from there, but I was always conscious they were climbing just a bit faster than I wanted to. Anyway, I managed to stay in touch, and although John and Tom got ahead a bit again at Drove Road, Ali and I reeled them in across the rougher stuff on Hare Hill, and we were all climbing Black Hill together.
Tom clearly was the freshest here and started to get a bit of a gap, but he fluffed the descent so we were all back together at the start of Bells, where in my head I knew it was going to really get tough. John blew up first, and was off the back almost immediately. I dropped off next, with Tom and Ali powering up the hill. I had to walk most of it, but actually felt ok and thought I might get back onto Ali until Capelaw when I started feeling dreadful. Luckily I had a huge gap behind me, but I could see Tom and Ali pulling away all the time. Ended up walking almost all of the climbs from there to the finish, and lost 5 minutes on Tom and 3 on Ali in the last 40 mins of running.
Tried in vain to sprint off Caerketton to get sub 2:30, but didn't quite manage that.

Really happy to be back racing again this year, even if I am not quite back where I was a couple of years ago. Definitely lacking some tough longer training runs, and I look forward to running this race again with a bit more training in the legs. Hats off to Tom and especially Ali who dragged me round a lot of the route and set a massive pb!

Definitely didn't drink enough. Took 500ml only.
