| I decided to take two days off of training all together on Thursday. I haven't been getting enough sleep and havent felt very good. I *could* have trained, and the plan for this week was to train at a higher intensity. I however did a questionnaire from the sports psychology department at work on overtraining/stress and my results were iffy enough, in addition to my own feeling of exhaustion, that taking two days off made sense. It really frustrates me, the last 4 weeks have been really mediocre, I manage about 4-5 days of good training, and then 2 days I *have* to take time off or reduce my training for different reasons. I know work has an influence; I have been under more stress than usual. Unfortunately the really busy period of data collection is coming up in a week, and will last three weeks. During that time I will not be able to train well either:-( | ||

| Berner Cross Champs.
The course consisted of 5 laps on a big field, with soft muddy ground. In each lap there were 3 180° turns and 2 120° turns. This, plus the soft ground, made it somewhat slow, always breaking around the turns and accelerating again. It ended up being pretty fun, but I had to fight the whole way mentally. It was tough to run a cross- country race again! | ||

| I drew a line-o on a map that I had never been on. This can prove to be challenging when out in the woods. The map was also old, so I got a lot of practice in being flexible and searching for obvious features. Had some trouble concentrating at times. Tried to focus looking ahead and picking the features off in the distance that I was navigating off of, like Spike wrote about in his blog. This helped me concentrate a little better for a while.
Beautiful atmosphere with a mix of rain and sun, but the wind made the trees creek, which is kind of spooky! | ||

| Went on a map walk (I had planned an orienteering training today), spend an hour walking to a bunch controls on the course. The map was printed without trails and the legs were long forcing good compass work. I focused on reading the green on the map. Interesting exercise, but frustrating to be walking and feel like I am huffing and puffing away. | ||

I signed up for the "fast" group, which turned out to be really good, nice and fast pace, with lots of climb, but no too tough, perfect long pace. We were out for 2 hours. I had fun and enjoyed snowshoeing in the dark. The fondue afterwards tasted very good:-) | ||

I was definitely worse than last year at this time from a maximal speed perspective, but my threshold was still the same. I really didn't have much in my legs, they haven't recovered from Saturday. My theory is that with fresh legs I could run better than last year, but today wasn't optimal. Threshold was at 14.5 km/h with HR 184 VO2 max was 59ml/kg/min | ||

| Yesterday evening as I was falling asleep I rubbed my left eye and it started to hurt and water. I fell asleep anyway, but this morning I woke up with my eye swallow and watering. I remember getting a branch in my eye during the race yesterday, but it wasn't bad. Anyway, today I spend most of the day with one eye closed, and sometimes the pain was so annoying that all I could do way lay there (and fall asleep). I started wearing sunglasses, which really helped, and in the early evening it got better. Running didn't bother it, and now it only hurts a little and is slightly smaller than my other eye. Strange huh! | ||

| I found 150 controls today!!!!
World record in controls with SI card. The men had 205 controls!! Swiss team event! 3 loops of 50 controls with map exchange per loop. Mass start. Loop 1 = 6.6km 50m (51'49") I stayed with a fast group, it was too fast, had to slow down for the next loop. Loop 2 = 6.3 km 50m (6450") Was in a small group of three women most of the way. We had one big mistake and looked for a control for 5'. I lead a lot and started to feel really good towards the end of the loop. Loop 3 = 7.5 km 185m (65'20") I felt good on this loop and lead our group most of the way. Some guys who did the 205 control course caught up with us at the map exchange, but were not moving much faster than us on the third loop, saw them a lot. Ended up getting to the finish before the two girls I did the whole course with. 3hour 10' includes about 3-5' at each map exchange to drink water and eat something. The time spend there will be taken off of the official results (this was also used to download our SI cards and erase them for the next loop!). There was an extra km from running to the map exchanges switching forests. It was a lot of fun, and I really got into a flow for some parts of it. I am VERY happy with the concentration I had, but somewhat disappointed not to be able to stay with the "good" girls for longer. It's just not there physically. Lost 50' on Sime and 30' on the Lea Müller, Martina Fritschy crowd including breaks, I think. I will check results tomorrow. I am so spend, I need to go to bed. | ||
