| Trying to decide if my back was well enough to run in the Tiomila relay. I was still in a lot of pain, walking, standing, sitting... running didn't feel great either... so I decided not to run. I needed to be conservative since the team trials are in 3 weeks. Too bad, took some fun out of watching too, but still cool to see my first Tiomila.

| Training with Tom on a map that should be very relevant to the Tiomila area. This place was great! Wicked fast and open and interesting contour detail. I did the first 2.5km with my compass trying to stay on the line, and thereafter without a compass. Tom shadowed me for the section without a compass. The highlight of the training was doing a 2km leg without a compass in 9'30"! This training was really a lot of fun. | ||

| So... my time is not very good. But this was actually a good race for 95% of it. Unfortunately I managed to throw in another disaster mistake in there. I did a 180° out of a control and lost about 18' on this one control. I do have to say that the rest of the race went really well and I got up into a good flow and had some good speed in the terrain too, finally figured it out! I will be interested to see the splits, because the end of this race actually made the whole race a positive experience.
It does surprise me, however, that I am still capable of such big, huge, disastrous mistakes. I felt like I was 14 again. One thing I am certain of though is that I learned a lot this weekend, and THAT'S why I came to Sweden in the first place.
| Note | ||
| Todays race: I had 7 splits where I lost 47 sec or less to the leader, and 4 more splits were I lost 1'30 seconds or less. This certainly reinstated the good feeling I had on the course once it finally clicked. | ||

| REST DAY
I had planned this day in advance, I had to do a work thing with the Swiss Junior team, and the travel time down to where they are having there training camp was so extensive that it allowed no time at all to train. I wish I could have gone for a jog or something. But maybe it was good for my calf. This weekend we are heading to several races. A night-O on Friday, which I decided not to participate in advance, in order to prepare for the Elitserie races on Saturday (middle distance) and Sunday (long distance). Since I was 6th in Elite 2 on Monday I was really hoping to get into the Elite 1 category. Unfortunately the top 5 get in automatically, and I found out today that they put me in Elite 2 for the weekend.

| Training 1: SM relay relevant (Kullaskogen 1:15000)
My shin and lower knee (attachment of the outer calf muscle) hurt when I woke up in the morning. I tried not to think about it too much and decide to take the training as it comes. We had to pack and clean up our cabin before leaving. We drove home to Karlstad after our training. The training was to be relay relevant, so we started in a mass start, and had forked controls. I wasnt sure how much I would do, so I just headed to control number one with the group. Two of us and I searched for the first control, finding the other two controls first, before our own. I certainly wasnt paying enough attention heading into the control area. After that I was on my own, and I just plugged along as best as I could. The woods here were even thicker than yesterdays long distance training and I didnt feel particularly motivated. The map also turned out to have a lot of new felled areas, one of which was being worked on while we ran three butterfly loops through it. This made the butterfly controls particularly difficult, since you had to ignore the vegetation all together. I am not so good this and search for two more controls. Not my day. After about 40 minutes I had had enough (my calf started cramping again too) so I headed to the car.

| ahr:160 max:173 shoes: VJ Integrators (red/black) | ||
| Training 1: Middle distance training (Vangaberget-Norra 1:10000)
Very interesting terrain. Similar to what we have in the Tessin in Switzerland, steep on a hillside with lots of rock, and large cliffs. My legs were dead going up the first long climb to number 1. I should have warmed up before starting, this turned out to be a very bad decision, since my achilles and calves cramped up. I paid for this for the rest of the course (I actually stopped once to stretch it was so bad) and I still felt it in the afternoon training. Unfortunately it, combined with some pain I had before the races in my shin, made a bad mixture and I got a little inflammation on my shin and up near my knee. This made me take the afternoon training as well as the next days training very easy. Other than some problems with my right lower leg, the orienteering went well. I did search for one control from about 90 seconds, I had spiked it but didnt see the streamer, and then ran a circle trying to correct, came back to the original spot and saw the streamer.

| ahr:156 max:176 shoes: O-shoes (VJ Integrators) | ||
| Training 2: Long distance training (Ljungryda 1:15000)
This was very different terrain than anything we had been in so far. The vegetation was denser, and the forest was quite thick. In some spots running was a fight over deadfall, but other places could be quite fast. I took it very slowly because of my leg. I didnt know how much of the course I would do and if I would cut out some. I started out feeling sluggish and tired, but after about 30 minute my legs finally warmed up and I decide to do the whole course. At about 55 minutes my lower right calf starts to cramp up and I feel like my calf had become a stone. This made running painful, but I finish up the rest. At the car I was pretty worried about my leg, but I am certainly happy to have been able to do the whole thing.

| Elitserie Long distance (Elite-2): (Brösarp Västra 1:15000)
Wow! Another very good run. The first run of the year where I reached my technical goals. No mistakes over 1 minute long. Actually I had NO mistakes in the control circle!!! I made one route choice error which cost me 1-2 minutes, but that doesnt count as technical mistake in the sense of, not finding the control smoothly. Physically I felt really tired. I kept telling myself to push, and tried to have positive talk, although I felt really negative about my physical form. I somehow managed to have a very good technical race. I was concentrated at all times. I kept telling myself, you want to be good today, dont you!! I was 6th in Elite 2 category!! The top 5 are automatically qualified for the Elitserie races next weekend in Elite 1. I am hoping to get into Elite 1 with this result, but it will be tough. I am happy with my result though.

While I was warming-up I felt pretty tired and stiff from yesterdays Sprint race. I told myself that I just had to make sure I warmed up enough, so I kept jogging laps, doing leg swings and stretching until I thought my legs were better since I was running an open course I could start anytime. I gave myself the time needed. cool-down 36' with Sandy J-H, chatting away...

| The race went well&again&I mean it wasnt without mistakes, but I was concentrated and focused. I am really happy with my time for the amount of small errors. I calculated about 4 minutes of mistakes but only one was over 1 minute. Thats the closest Ive ever been to achieve this years technical goal. Im really happy with this, especially since this is very Denmark relevant terrain.
Lost 9 min to Jan Troeng. Training 2: Afternoon off. I wanted to make sure I was fresh for the long distance race tomorrow, so I didnt go to the afternoon training.

| Training 2: Swedish Sprint camps. (Högskolan Kristianstad 1:5000)
Really good run, focused before but also during the race. I was a little nervous before but less than normally before a big race. The state of mind that I had is good for racing, I need to find this again. I was 2nd in D21L, 40 seconds behind Julia Novikov. We had the same course as the DE heat 3. My time was good for 9th place in that heat, 45 seconds behind Lena Eliasson. I would have qualified for the Swedish sprint champs final. Pretty cool.

| OK Tyr Training Camp
14th-30th of April 2006 Training 1: Furuboda (coastal terrain 1:10000) Super interesting coast terrain. Mostly sand dunes in open area, but also some detail wooded parts. Traveling to Sweden yesterday, flying gave me sinus pain. I had a pretty bad headache when I woke up. I felt my head during the training, which I felt the most when I had to look at the detail of the map. The training went well from a technical side my legs were heavy though (two days off of training does that to me). I could orienteer better in the woods than in the sand dunes part of the map.

| Training 2: Degeberga S (1:10000)
My headache just got worse with the day and reading the map was tough. I mostly didnt have my sense of direction and went off about 90° wrong twice. I felt really discouraged during and after the training. I think without a headache I would have been fine, so I am not worried about it.

| Swiss Night-O champs--Mass start
The start went well for me, and I was with the leading pack for about 4 controls. We all searched for one control, and then afterwards I had a different forking. Found the next one fine, but blew up the one after that (lost 5'), two controls later I went about 90° wrong and lost almost 10'. From then on I was alone. Certainly not a good race, but I got a really good training out of it. Running the rest on my own was really good practice. I really got into a flow on the last loop and found some self confidence. For the first night-O this year I shouldn't have expected more, even though I did. Maps and comments are here!

I was running in some woods that I hardly ever go to and I saw a control, which means the woods are mapped. Now I just have to find out which club has the map, this is a bit tricky, because we live right in an area where three different clubs have maps. I felt like crap before I went, but during the run I started to feel really good. It was great to get out, one of those this is why I love to run so much type of experiences. There are two reasons for this, one being that I took a week off to recover from my winter training and get ready for the season. This fit right in well during a stressful week at work. The other reason is that I ended up getting sick at the end of the month. I am disappointed that my running hours are lower, but pleased to be orienteering more that last year. At this time last year I had training 6h 24' of orienteering, compared to 22h 30' this year. I think I took a step in the right direction. Biking hours are down a little, which is wanted, and I have been better disciplined with my strength workouts, which I think is really important! So, all in all, okay!

| Note | ||
| Looking at my course last night I realized I skipped a control... how is that possible when I was ONLY jogging!! It makes me realize that I was/am a bit sick and my head wasn't into it. I added a minute to my time from yesterday, because that is about how long it would have taken me to go to this control. It was right on the line for a long leg, and when going into number 10, I looked at the next leg and only saw the long line over to control 12 and planned my route. Number 11 was on the same line, just off to the left, wouldn't have changed my route to 12 much, but I would have popped over to the side of a building along the way. Stupid mistake, but so also typical. I am happy it happened to me yesterday instead of at an important race. It has raised my awareness of the possibility of this happening. Good thing really. | ||
| Note | ||
| Btw, I decided not to run the race today. Total bummer! But when I think about all the discussion that goes on about training when sick, racing when sick really doesn't make any sense. It was a WRE, which would have meant some good points. Oh well. Better to look to my health and get ready for my training camp in Sweden in two weeks. I am really looking forward to having a vacation to concentrate on orienteering. Wahoo!
Btw, I have bought my tickets for the team trials; I guess I should sign up as well. See you there!

| Jogging the sprint course in Lausanne, I was supposed to race in the Swiss trials for the first world cup races, unfortunately I woke up with my cold back in a new force. My lungs seem very tight, making breathing feel hard. I am not sure why the cold came back, or even if it wasn't completely gone, why it's presented itself in my chest now. Too bad! Tomorrow race in now in question.
Winning time today was Sime with 14:13, Lea Müller just under 15', and Seline Stalder a few seconds behind Lea... I'm not sure of the exact times.
