| Map Hiking on the red course
After camping is sub-freezing temps and waking up cold and shivering several times during the night my body went on strike. It was a hard decision not to run the long distance race today. I was really really was looking forward to running it. If healthy, I think I could have really pushed through the fast terrain and had a fun time. Instead I decided to hike around some of the red course, going to controls that the blue course was coming through too. I was able to see the three blue guys (John F. Eric B. and Marc L.) coming through two controls and got some really good pictures. I walked to 7 controls on the red course and was out for about 2 hours. It was peaceful, but I was also regretting not running the race, I would have loved it. But from a health point of view it was the correct decision.

| Map Hike on the sprint course
I wanted to go look at the mistakes I made on the sprint course yesterday. It was good to see what I did wrong and why I interpreted the map in that way at high speed. After this I was pooped. Went into the car and slept for an hour while everyone was at the maze-O. Too bad I missed it.

| We arrived in Anza Borrego after getting a ride with Clare Durane and her brother Steve from L.A. around 10:30 (Thanks Clare and Steve!). My cold had stayed stable; unfortunately I was not healthy yet. I wasn't sure how I would feel racing, but didn't think too much of it. | ||

| Middle Distance on Buttes Pass
Well, you cant win a race again Pam James after making a 7 minute mistake on my first control, I guess thats fair. What a bummer to make such a big mistake on the first control of 2007. This mistake was a result of not being familiar with the terrain and the mapping, but this is no excuse. Part of orienteering well is adjusting to new terrain and new mapping styles fast enough not to make big mistakes. However, after the first control I spiked every control after that, winning all the other splits but two where I lost 10 seconds to the best time on one control and 1 second on the other. I was upset at myself for the first control, but pleased with my race after that. Pam James beat me by about 1'30". The terrain was amazing! Map reading was hard, and it required total concentration. The running was also difficult due to loose sand and rocks, and the steep dirt banks and dirt cliffs. It was certainly an experience. I had a lot of fun, not only because it was a challenge but because it was something so new and different from any orienteering I have done or will do in a long time. My chest cold held up for the race, my legs felt fresh and fast but my lungs couldnt keep up. I did a fair amount of coughing and wheezing but didnt think I was putting my recovery in danger. | AB Sprint
US Team Fundraiser Did I mention how COLD it was in AB?!?! Highs around 45F and lows around 20F, brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I guess I shouldn't have run this Sprint, but I wanted to and I still felt fine. I was a little nervous starting, more so because my dad was standing on this hill where you could see most of the course and I knew he was watching me, but also because I wanted to be fast and race cleanly. I didn't manage to do that. I was also still feeling a little flustered because of the problems we had with the sprint before I started. It turns out that the SI units weren't working, and we didn't find this out until about 15 people had already started. I was helping at the start and between some hectic shuffling for start times between the people who didnt have a start time, who were there ready to run and with those who had a start time and werent there, AND people returning from the race reporting that the SI units werent working needing new start times, I felt a little high strung by the time I was relieved of my start duties. In the end every thing worked out, people ran the sprint and had a good time. We just didnt have a way to check if everyone went to the controls. I guess we decided to just go on the honor system, which is fine. I made my first mistake on control 2, coming over one ridge a little in a hurry and not reading the detail of the map correctly (sprint syndrome I guess). I lost about 1 30 there, the 3rd and 4th controls went fine, but on the 5th I was just too hasty and (again) didnt look close enough to where the control location was, running too high (another 1 minute lost). At this point I was a little frustrated and didnt take enough time to execute the next one correctly and gained too much elevation landing on the trail, 4 contours too high. Stupido! After that I got it back together again.. I feel like Sprint racing takes a lot of self control, not letting yourself be too much in a hurry, but still running fast and aggressively. I am still a little rusty. At least its only January Running the sprint made me weak and pretty quickly afterwards I notices that my cold just took a turn for the worse. Its so hard to judge how much you can push yourself with a cold. I guess in the cold weather it wasnt that good of an idea to run hard and fast with an infection in my lungs. My breathing became restricted for the rest of the evening. No fun.

| Marc and I decided to do our very own "model event" for Anza Borrego here in LA and went to a map north of the city called Vasquez Rocks County Park, in Agua Dulce. It is a great area, and a great map. Very detailed, which we couldn't handle very well, we were both pretty slow and made mistakes in the rocks. It was fun anyway:-)
My health is soso, but getting better.
