Event: 2. National Race / Schaffhauser OL

Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [2]2 km (10:00 / km) +80m 8:20 / km

They had a nice warm-up map for us at the SM Ultralong. It was a good way to prepare for the race. I was nervous!

Swedish Ultralong Champs

I was nervous before the race. I was worried about running this distance in Swedish woods, especially because I knew these woods would be rough. I wasn't worried about the physical aspect of the race, but knew that if I made some mistakes I would be out there for a while.
The race turned out to go really well. I started fast with a group of runners and was at the first control with Simone N-L (!), of course never seeing her again after that though, but still cool. Then after half way to the 2nd control I was suddenly alone. I had the longest loop for my first loop (which I didn't know at the time.) At the end of the loop I was with some people again, which was a relief since I was worried that I was doing badly, even though I hadn't had any problems. I came through the first loop in 43rd position. The second loop went really well, I was (again) alone in the beginning, because all of the people I saw at the end of the 1st loop had a different loop for their 2nd loop. I basically did the whole loop alone seeing people on and off, but never running in a group. Starting the 3rd loop alone I really didn't know how I was doing. I came through in 34th place. The last loop was similar to all the other loops, so I didn't have to be very careful, some parts I knew by heart. Basically you just had to go to a solid attack-point and then slow down. This worked well and I kept spiking all my controls. At the end of the last loop I was then with 5 other women. I basically jogged behind the girl that was leading for several controls. Near the end, three of us sped up a bit. In the finish shoot I managed to pass one of the women, but the other was a few seconds ahead. The women I passed in the finish shoot is from the Karlstad region, but not in Tyr. I felt kind of bad passing her, but in the moment I didn't think twice. :-)
I am really happy with this race and the result. I ended up 33rd out of 65 women. Cool.

So my time ends up being 30' behind Simone N-L, but she won by 7 minutes. I think I was only 15' behind the 10th place and 10 minutes behind some really good runners. I probably could have been just a little faster if I had been with people, but this way was much more satisfying.

Attempting to cool down after the race. My legs stiffened up pretty quick though.

Note
I have arrived in Stockholm and have internert at the airport, so I thought I would write a note... hehe silly me. Suzanne, with her clubmates should be here any minute, and then we are heading down to Jönköping.

Training with OK Linné on the model event for the SM Ultralong. These woods were nicer than what we got to run on in the actual race. I felt good about my map reading ability, and physically I felt rested.
It was really nice of Linné to pick me up at the airport and let me come with them to the training. It's nice to have friends all over the place.

Note
(rest day)
Another rest day this week... I didn't get enough sleep last night, was busy at work, and had to head off to Zürich to stay at a friends before my flight tomorrow morning at 6:45 to Stockholm, so I decided to skip the light jogging I was going to do. My IT band started hurting again after my run yesterday, so I think it's not a bad idea, plus with the SM Ultralong on Sunday, being rested is a good idea.

Ran from Magglingen down to Biel through Evilard to the Toubenlochschlucht. WOW! What a beautiful canyon just around the corner from here. There was a mixture of sun and rain, which made a really beautiful atmosphere. About 1 hour 10' into the run it started to rain really hard and I got pretty cold (especially my hands) and I couldn't warm up even running uphill so I decided to cut the run short. I would have added about 20 more minutes to the run if I had done my original plan. No harm done not doing it though.

The attachment of my IT band at the knee has been bothering me once in a while for the last few weeks, now after the race on Sunday the attachment at the hip started to hurt. This is why I took yesterday off, and got a massage (which really helped) and why I didn't do any running today either. It already feels much better.
