running warm up/down 30:00 [1] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)

Warm-up for the Sprint. Legs felt heavy, even though I didn't run yesterday. I've learned however that the way my legs feel during my warm-up doesn't really represent how I will feel during the race. This was true today as well. My legs were strong for most of the races.

NAOC Sprint

Good race, couldn't have done it better. Pushed as hard as I could and never made any mistakes. Happy with it. Lost all of my time to Sam in the last loop, that basically due to fitness, she was just stronger in the end. It was a great feeling to come into the finish with a fast time and in 1st. Really enjoyed it. Here is another picture: http://bidwbb.smugmug.com/2010-Journal/07-July/201...

Decided not to run the long. Bummed about it, but probably the best thing to do.

Middle North American champs today.

2nd overall. 1st American. It was a good race. Hip is too painful to run tomorrow probably...

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [2] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)

Warming up on the model event. Nervous about the race, had some extra pressure with Sam starting two minutes after me. I was able to warm-up well and get my head in order as well. Ready to go by the time my start was up, which was a good thing.

NAOC Middle distance (WRE)

Started well, best split to number 1, got into the map basically right away and felt confident. Left 1 a little too much to the left (less climb) and almost made a parallel error to 2, like several other people, but caught it pretty quickly and corrected. The next 3 controls went very well and on my way to number 3, I saw Pam James who started 2 minutes ahead of me. Caught her by number 4. It was a weird, but also proud moment for me, basically because Pam was my ideal when I was a junior, I always wanted to be as good as her. Fun to see her again. I took the left down the hill route to number 6, which I think was faster than going straight down the hill. Made a little mistake to 7 (20 seconds). I started to feel tired going to 8 (I was basically running as fast as I could the whole first round) and climbing up to 8 was tough. Messed up the spectator control in front of everyone, even though I was very concentrated on the leg, but I mixed up the bunches of trees and was too high. Made for a cool picture though: http://bidwbb.smugmug.com/2010-Journal/07-July/201...

The rest of the course was physically tough, but not technically difficult any more. It meant that I just had to push myself and feel the pain for another 20 minutes. I did look behind myself on the long leg up the hill to see if Sam was coming, and when she wasn't within sight I took a few walking steps up that hill... :-)

I knew I had a good race coming into the last control and I was very motivated. The cheering made it a lot of fun to run as hard as I could into the finish. I was very satisfied with my race and happy in the finish. Louise was just faster and stronger today, but I was pleased with being 1st American.

Model event for the North American Champs. The terrain is beautiful, these are going to be some great races.

In the afternoon, my hip hit an all time high in pain. It was actually hurting just standing around. This is when I had a moment of panic and realized that I may not be able to run all the events here at the NAOC's. There was some crying involved and some strategical thinking with my very supporting teammates (thanks Ali, Sam and Ross). The plan was to run the middle for sure and see how it reacts to the race and then decide if the long is realistic. I also had a consultation with a physio I know, which ended up helping a lot.

(injured) (rest day)

Decided that a rest day might help the hip. With the upcoming races, it was the right thing to do. We had arrived in Banff National park, so it was hard to actually not go running, but I did some touristy shopping in the Banff town instead.

Hi :-)
I'm in Vancouver on my way to Calgary (with Sam and Ross) for the North American Champs. We had a wonderful time in Yosemite for Kat's and Boris's wedding. The wedding was a huge success, so so beautiful and lots of fun. Yosemite also really surprised me with its beauty, I was in awe most of the time there. We did a lot of hiking while there and really enjoyed the park to our fullest.

running 40:01 [2] 6.53 km (6:08 / km)
(injured)

Running from Suzanne's house in SF before heading to the airport for our flight to Calgary. Feeling my hip now pretty much all the time, especially when trying to fall asleep. The run was nice though.
