| Run around Haller Lake. At first we were going pretty fast and keeping up with the guys, then we slowed down some.
Also, running the short Ayrault hill loop doing form drills going up the hill.
| Strength 5:00 [3] | ||
| sit-ups with and without a medicine ball | ||
| Note | ||
| I iced my shins again today after practice as a preventative measure. I've been doing some heel walks and a little icing, and I haven't yet tried the backwards running (except for the 30 meters or so we did of that going up the hill today), but hopefully my shins will like me more this year than the last three years since I really don't want to get shin splints again. | ||

| Running around Haller Lake and back with a brief stop at the gym at Ingraham to attempt to see the basketball game. We didn't have any money (there was a cost to the game), although some students let us in (I think they thought we were Ingraham students) though we were kicked out after about a minute. The run itself was fun, although I wish I would have had a map with me. That doesn't really work for track workouts though. | ||

| Track practice started. Today's workout was pretty easy and slow since it's the first day and some people hadn't been running a lot over the winter. I posted the running around the track separately (this post) from the long slow distance running (I'm going to try and do that from now on). I also iced after practice to hopefully help prevent getting shin splints.

The forest part was kind of fun since there was one really interesting control. Sadly I messed up on that one (probably losing a couple of minutes) because I didn't look at my control description and it looked like a reantrant on the map so I charged down this reantrant in the dark green only to realize after a minute or so that I was supposed to be on a spur. My only other navigational mistake was when I went to 12 instead of 11 (they were less than 150 meters apart) because I accidentally started looking at the wrong spot on the map. Besides that it was a pretty clean run. And it was a really fun meet because I got to hang out with lots of the same people as at Interscholastics.

| I ran from my hotel room a couple miles up the road and then back. I ran my normal training pace for 5 minutes, then sped up for 2 minutes and repeated that. It wasn't the nicest run since I was running along a busy street with several stop lights since I don't know the area at all. | ||

| Running 32:11 [3] 3.5 mi (9:12 / mi) | ||

| I ran a loop around the Claremont Colleges and surrounding area. The distance is a guess since I left my GPS watch at the hotel. | ||
| Walking 53:04 [1] 2.5 mi (21:12 / mi) | ||
| I walked from my brother's dorm to Jamba Juice and back.
I've done a lot of other walking the last couple of days. I spent about 8 hours walking around Disneyland yesterday (which is why I didn't go running), so my feet were getting kind of sore by the end of the walk today.

| Day 2 at Interscholastics. Today was so much better than yesterday although I still made a few couple minute errors. My main problems were controls 7 and 10. For 7, if I would have just looked to my left, I would have seen my control, but instead I headed to the other side of the earth bank my control was on, which was down the hill. I then had to loop around, so I lost a couple minutes here. At 10, I went to far along the uncrossable earth bank and came across a control farther along. I then saw the building/dock down by the lake and realized I was a little too far south. I lost a couple minutes here as well. Besides that, most the controls were pretty good, although a lost 30 seconds to a minute on a couple others since I ended up slightly to the side of where I was supposed to be, although I figured it out almost immediately. I liked this course better than yesterday because it had less buildings and I was able to rely on contours more. I also used what I had learned about the terrain yesterday as well as making sure to slow down on the first few controls. I also tried very hard to think of today as a new race and not worry about the time I needed to make up to try and medal, and I was pretty successful with this. I was happy with today's run, and although I'm still disappointed with yesterday's huge error, it was a good meet, I had a lot of fun, I got in some practice, and my team did well. | ||

| Day 1 at Interscholastics. I just wasn't mentally prepared for this day, I guess. I was a little too far to the side for my first control, so I lost a minute or so, and because of that I decided I needed to speed up and I therefore wasn't concentrating well. When going to the second control, I ended up near control 6, figured out where I was, attempted to take a compass bearing, and ended up being drawn in the wrong direction by the gully and ended up about 70 degrees off of the bearing I was trying to take. I ended up at control 5, and eventually made my way back to 2. I pretty much just did everything wrong on that control. The next several controls were fine, though while going to 10, I think I cut through farther north than I was was planning, so even though I thought I found the place to leave the trail I was on, by pace counting I wasn't nearly far enough so I kept going. I ended up a ways north of where I wanted to be and although I easily knew where I was and how to get to the control, I ran at least twice as far as I needed to. I learned that I need to slow down sometimes (especially near the beginning of the course) and double check my bearings and make sure I'm navigating well. | ||

| The sprint at Interscholastics. I started 1 minuted behind Drew, so I ended up just in front of him after the 4th control. I know I should always ignore people, but I wanted to speed up and get farther ahead of him so neither of us would pay attention to the other. Because of that, I started running faster than I can navigate, and I wasn't paying enough attention, so I ended up near the ladder instead of near the ruins on control 5. I lost several minutes there. I was then doing pretty well and after control 10, I started to head in the wrong direction at first, though I caught myself. Besides that, the course went pretty well, although a several minute mistake on a sprint is huge. It was the first time I had been orienteering for a while. There were lots of buildings which were easy to see through the open forest. It was also really hot while I was running. | ||

| I did controls 1-8 + 11 of Eric's contours only map at Hamlin. Drew was shadowing me to make sure I was in the right place, but he forgot where some of them were, so we spent a little extra time making sure we were in the right locations. I'm out of practice. | ||

| I ran to Discovery Park, back past my house to the Howe St Bridge, and then home. While running, I passed my old softball coach from about 8 years ago. He amazingly recognized me, but I recognized him as I was going by, so I didn't really get to stop and talk. I brought along my map from the first day of Interscholastics freshman year. | ||

| I didn't want to go too far in case I got really tired or something, so I just ran around the track even though I much prefer actually going somewhere. It felt pretty good, though I was really tired afterwards (ready to go to sleep kind of tired). I still don't quite have all my energy back yet. | ||

| I still have a fever and I'm still really achy. I've basically been in bed/lying on a couch since 2:30 pm yesterday (with the exception a eating a small dinner and sitting at a desk to email people). And I haven't been able to get comfortable the entire time. I'm definitely not going anywhere today. Maybe I'll make it to the training tomorrow and just bundle up and do it slowly? Well, only if I'm getting better and hopefully not contagious. | ||

| (sick) | ||
| I came home sick most of the way through the day today and then napped for several hours. I have a fever, and I don't think my parents are going to let me go to the meet tomorrow (even just to spectate). I'm very annoyed about that for multiple reasons:
- I won't get to see the Lakeside JV guys hopefully get four points more than the first place team and move into first themselves - I don't have a chance to come in 1st for the season - I'll miss the NWFF meeting - I won't get to bring the trophy back (this just means I'll have to figure something out later in the week unless I can give it to Spencer to bring) - I only will have gone to 4 WIOL meets this year - I haven't orienteered for a while and I need practice before Interscholastics - and of course because I hate being sick
