Ride 2:24:30 [3] 32.0 km (4:31 / km) +1177m 3:49 / km
shoes: Giant XTC Team

After a below zero (-2 degree) night the guys headed off on a run, then a paddle. After chasing them around for a while (didn't find them), saw them off on the paddle then headed up to Barwon Reservoir for their MTB - Orienteer - MTB transition. Then went for a ride with Rob P to place a few of the orienteer CPs plus a small loop of the Red Carpet Tk and then to the Forrest single track trails. We rode three tracks including Marriners Loop (best of the lot) to place those three CPs then rode back to the TA. Spent the next 4 - 5 hours at the TA seeing the majority of the teams through which was good. Dave and Wal were still looking spritely!

Ride 1:43:30 [3] 37.0 km (2:48 / km) +1741m 2:16 / km
shoes: Giant XTC Team

Support Crew duties at the Keen Race began today, as Dave and Wal hit Day 2. Once they left Apollo Bay on their bikes for most of the day I jumped on mine and went for a spin. Rode The Great Ocean Road, then up Wild Dog Rd till I reached Skenes Creek Rd. It was a nice middle ring climb to the top, getting there after 1hr 6min (which included a few kms of flat). Then bombed back down Skenes Creek Rd and back to the car.

Run 40:00 [3] 7.2 km (5:33 / km)

Easy run to Seaford and back. Wasn't feeling too flash.

Ride 3:02:00 [3] 54.5 km (3:20 / km) +1160m 3:01 / km
slept:10.0 shoes: Giant XTC Team

Morning ride with Rob D around the hills in Mt Eliza. Included a record attempt up Torture Track, but didn't get close to Rob's record. I'm now sitting on the same place as Dave so I'll have to give it another crack soon, earlier on in the ride so I'm a little fresher. Rode back along the rutted single track beside the old train line, getting a flat near Baxter. Legs were pretty tired by the end, probably because every ride with Rob is pretty quick for me.

Kayak 1:19:45 [3] 13.0 km (6:08 / km)
slept:7.0 shoes: K1 - Nelo Scorpion

Arvo lap of Patterson River and canals plus a bit extra up to the Freeway and back again. Quite slow, and not helped with a very low tide.

Run race (Mars Challenge) 1:58:00 [4] 21.5 km (5:29 / km) +465m 4:57 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: Nike Zoom Elite

Was doing Mars Challenge this year in the Mixed Pairs category with Dave. 7am start, which was typically cold and misty. I thought I was cruising around the first 3km loop around Sovereign Hill, however leaving I had to spend the next 15 minutes attempting to get the heart rate down to a managable rate. I think I was trying too hard to keep in front of our arch nemesis - a Men's Pair's couple including a guy I used to train with up here. Worked in to it well and managed to run all bar about 10 metres of the steepest hill up Mt Buninyong. Ran 8 minutes quicker than last year so I was very happy. Dave did it a little easier than me.

Ride race (Mars Challenge) 2:29:00 [4] 79.0 km (1:53 / km) +555m 1:49 / km
shoes: Giant TCR One (road)

Onto the bike and settled in nicely behind the Dave Train. Stayed there for the full 79kms bar a couple of downhills where I sling-shotted into the wind. Not a bad ride, felt good and was stoked to catch our arch nemesis with about 5kms to go and go steaming past.

Kayak race (Mars Challenge) 3:15:00 [4] 33.0 km (5:55 / km)
shoes: K2 - Prowler

Into the K2 and immediately felt comfortable, which was unexpected by the both of us. Cruised along to the first portage, then phaffed around trying to find an alternate put in point for the K2 rather than wait for about 5 nuffy boats to put in. Didn't make up any time but it was worth a try. Had similar problems at the put in at the 2nd and 3rd portage also costing us some time. Onto the lake and noticed the lack of strength getting across the lake in the very shallow water. Struggled a bit for the last ~6kms to the finish at the Barwon Heads bridge. Overall, I was happy with the day. Ran the quickest I have ever in 6 attempts, rode the quickest (I had a wheel to sit on so can't count it but I felt strong), didn't paddle too well though but phaffed a lot and I think we'd forgotten we were racing.

Run 38:50 [3] 7.2 km (5:24 / km)
slept:5.5 shoes: Nike Zoom Elite

To Seaford and back. Pretty cruisy and felt pretty good from an easy few days.

Ride 2:30:15 [3] 45.5 km (3:18 / km)
slept:6.0 shoes: Crusty Merida

Arvo ride with Dave around the Eliza Ranges. Rode the back roads to the Mt Eliza Top Shops, getting good views of the surf out in the bay. Rode around the top of the Quarry then dropped down the steep track on the eastern side. Had a challenge ride back up but didn't do so well! From here we went and did two cool laps around the reserve to the south, then up and down the nice creek track where we popped out and rode back home arriving just before dark.

Run 41:00 [3] 7.2 km (5:42 / km)
slept:9.0 shoes: Nike Zoom Elite

Cruisy run to Seaford and back. Felt a little lazy.

Run 3:16:30 [3] 23.5 km (8:22 / km) +1450m 6:23 / km
slept:8.5 shoes: Nike Zoom Elite

Morning run in the Dandenongs with Dave and Wal. Headed out from Wal's place in Sassafrass. Immediately knew that the legs were feeling the past few days. Did a loop through Doongalla and up The Scar and back to Wal's place via the Olinda (donut) Bakery. Was going to pull the pin here but decided to dump the pack and run down to the Kallista Tearooms to meet Ged and their kids for coffee. Dave and Wal ran back, while I got a lift. Soft I know, but 3 hours in the hills was enough today.

Ride 4:49:00 [3] 140.5 km (2:03 / km) +1300m 1:58 / km
slept:8.0 shoes: Giant TCR One (road)

Morning ride with Dave and Jarad. I nearly bypassed and stayed in bed but headed out with the agreement that I could stay out of the wind the whole ride :-) Rode the Nepean all the way to Sorrento and back with a detour up to Arthur's Seat on the way out and the way back. Went 15:35mins the first time, then 14:45mins the second time. Had a bit of fun going through Rye after a 4x4 pulled out towing a big fishing boat. We cruised behind it for a while doing 50+km/h. Legs felt not bad the whole way, however I kept my word and didn't take a lead all day!

Run 1:14:20 [3] 14.0 km (5:19 / km)
slept:10.0 shoes: Nike Zoom Elite

To Frankston, then back along the Foreshore Track. Exactly the same time as Friday of last week. Was a little steamy out.

Ride 55:00 [3] 22.5 km (2:27 / km) +295m 2:18 / km
shoes: Crusty Merida

Packed up the backpack with the roller blades, related equipment and a smaller pack containing 2L of cordial. Rode the roads to Nat's place at Sandringham. Felt the heavy pack.

Inline skating 1:50:30 [3] 27.0 km (4:06 / km) +429m 3:47 / km
shoes: Rollerblade Lightning II

Skate with Nat from Sandringham to St Kilda and back. Was a little shakey for the first couple of kms with the back pack on but cruised into it. Being a public holiday the bike paths were quite busy, and got worse as we got closer to the city. Good day out though.

Ride 1:06:30 [3] 25.0 km (2:40 / km) +310m 2:30 / km
shoes: Crusty Merida

Packed the bag back up and rode home. Went Beach Road to Mordialloc then onto the bike track and around the river to home. Bit of a head wind but survived well, despite a little lack of food. Made up for it when I got home.

Ride 3:35:00 [3] 81.0 km (2:39 / km) +809m 2:32 / km
slept:8.5 shoes: Crusty Merida

Rode the normal way out to Bayswater and met Dave. Rode back along the Eastlink Track, finishing in the dark, no lights. Nice evening, but was a little unmotivated, mainly on the way back.

Monday Apr 6, 2009 #

Ride 2:04:00 [3] 46.0 km (2:42 / km)
slept:9.0 shoes: Crusty Merida

Rode out to Mornington for a late breakfast of pancakes, freshly squeezed OJ and hot chocolate, then rode back the same way. Got rained on in both directions, but didn't feel too bad after yesterday.

Run 3:52:00 [3] 31.0 km (7:29 / km) +1600m 5:57 / km
slept:9.0 shoes: Nike Zoom Elite

Afternoon run in the Dandenongs with Dave, Wal and Jodie. Straight up Chandler, across the horse paddocks, around Sherbrook Forest then up to Sassafrass via the creek trail. We were all drenched by here from the serious rain. Jacket came out of the bag as we met Josh here, and he tagged in for Jodie. From here went down then back up via Ch 10 Tk to the Olinda Bakery. Very disappointed to find the donuts all sold out. Went back to Josh's place the same way as last week. Felt pretty good today, happy with how I'm running up hills finally.

Saturday Apr 4, 2009 #

Inline skating 44:00 [3] 8.2 km (5:22 / km)
slept:10.0 shoes: Rollerblade Lightning II

Had a bit of a slack day. Got out for a late arvo skate with Rob P, while Dave and Kathryn paddled. Did a slightly shortened version of the normal loop through Patterson Lakes. Rob was on Dave's skates and was better than I expected.

Friday Apr 3, 2009 #

Run 1:14:20 [3] 14.0 km (5:19 / km)
slept:10.0 shoes: Nike Zoom Elite

Comfortable run to Frankston then home via the Foreshore Track. Began with light rain and serious thunder. Finished with thunder and a serious downpour.

Ride 2:17:30 [3] 43.0 km (3:12 / km) +600m 2:59 / km
slept:10.0 shoes: Crusty Merida

Morning ride out to the Mt Eliza Ranges with Dave. Up to the Humphries Rd Top Shops then down through the Quarry Reserve to the reserve further south. Up to the top then we failed in finding the cool creek single track, we'll find it next time. Good ride, tried to ride easy.
