Run 1:02:15 [3] 7.8 km (7:59 / km)

Thought I'd better go in and check out the Pound whilst we were staying here. The bus was full so I ran/walked/shuffled the 2kms in and then up to the most popular place with 360 degree views of the whole area - Wangarra Lookout. I was very impressed. It'd be great to see more but they're full day hikes. Maybe next time. Legs were tired but okay, energy levels were down and the 36 degree heat today wasn't helping!

Ride race (FROE) 9:57:20 [4] 206.5 km (2:54 / km) +2000m 2:46 / km
shoes: Trek Superfly

Flinders Ranges Outback Epic. Dave and I had planned to do this race even before Ashley was born over a year ago. Dave's schedule unfortunately didn't allow him to race so we altered a few things and I travelled to Wilpena Pound with my parents and the two kids. Thankfully the kids and I flew to Adelaide so only had a 5 hour drive each way instead of 15! My preparation had been really good so I was looking forward to the event.

The race started at 6.30am before the kids were awake, and before the heat set in. I raced in the unsupported event meaning I was carrying everything and could only top up my water at 5 drink stops. With 35 degree heat forecast I knew I'd be pushing the boundaries a bit. I rode mostly by myself for the first 30kms until facing up into a medium strength headwind. I saw a group of three about 100m behind so I sat up a bit, refueled then joined them. We lost one guy almost immediately but I spent the majority of the race with the other two.

I hunger flatted after about 85kms and found myself alone again. I had a couple of quick bars and rode back up to them coming into Willow Springs at the 96km mark. This was also the start of the 109km event which started at 10.30am - 4 mins before I came though! It meant I was catching riders for the remainder of the event which was good. I rode really strongly for the next 75kms or so, carefully managing my water as it was stiflingly hot by now! We'd dropped one of the guys I was riding with (who apparently bonked badly and ended up dropping 2.5 hrs back!) and the other guy I'd been riding with was in the supported category. He was receiving icy poles, cold soft drink, and ice water to pour on himself....

The last 30kms was pretty slow for me. I was really struggling to stay cool and was low on water so I wasn't eating much. The last 30kms is probably the hardest of the course too. With 7-8kms to go I dropped off the guy I'd been riding with for 160kms and grovelled to the finish taking three quick break off the bike. I was rapt to finish under 10 hours which was my main goal, and I thought it was slipping away from me towards the end. Thankfully the final 2-3kms are fast flowing single track before suddenly popping out almost in sight of the finish line at Wilpena Pound. I finished 1st female (only 3 finished), 7th overall, 5th overall in the unsupported category.

Small, but really well run event. Scenery was amazing the whole way around, and the trails were challenging without being punishing. The heat made it a much tougher event than previous years and I think it's what hurt me the most.
