Sunday Jun 29

map hiking 40:00 [1]
Streamering the last few controls for the rogaine.

Spent most of the time swatting at biting insects of one variety or another; way worse than any other day I've been there, perhaps because I was near some swampy ground for much of the time, or perhaps because I forgot to use any bug spray before I went out.

biking 39:39 [3] 8.2 mi (4:49 / mi)
Helping Valerie time a bike race at Quantico. Got out for a short bike ride in the morning when there wasn't much going on. First time I got my bike out of my shed this year and I'm glad I did. I always forget how much I enjoy riding. I'm out of riding shape though - my hands and feet got numb pretty fast. Didn't want to get in the way of any of the racers on the course though so just rode a big road loop around the Quantico base.

Friday Jun 27

orienteering 1:25:00 [3]
Orienteering at Prince William Forest on a course Valerie streamered. In order to get water halfway through, we parked near controls #3 and #4 and I ran #4 to the finish while she did #3 backwards to the start. It was a fun few controls; nice orienteering. I was a bit sloppy near the end, but corrected quickly each time. I did some running in the woods but not a whole lot. After meeting up with Valerie, at the original start/finish where there was a water fountain, continued on doing #1 through #3 while she did the rest of the course backwards. Had a little trouble with #1 (too high), and then got stung by a bee (or bees) a couple of times right after #2. I could have done without the bee stings, but other than that it was a great day in the woods.

Note
A hummingbird!! I've never seen one in my yard before. I was wondering what that large thing on the lamb's ears was and it was a hummingbird. This may inspire me to get a hummingbird feeder.

strength & stretching (Core DVD) 40:00 [1]
Not sure why suddenly at 10pm this seemed like a good idea...

Wednesday Jun 25

map hiking 4:00:00 [1]
More Fair Hill streamering. At the park from 10:30 to 7:00 and on my feet for all but about two hours - meeting with the ranger, lunch, changing when I finished. But some of it was standing still trying to decide what to do. Hard to know what to count as "training". But I am tired, that's for sure!

Almost done. Need one more visit - but only about an hour's worth. Plan to stop on my way home from DC on Sunday.

A lot of the controls are a very short distance from a mountain bike-able trail which hopefully will help setup and pickup the weekend of the event. I wonder how many streamers will make it to Labor Day?

running 1:01:00 [3]
TNT - ran with Heather; Sandy did a basement workout; Alison ran with Karl and Bob. I have a reentrant, but Alison now has a hill!

Ran three miles on the drive with Heather letting her set the pace. The first two miles were well under 10 minute pace but they felt a lot slower than that. Heather really wanted to walk after two but we did the whole planned workout by just slowing it way down for the last mile. She's a trooper!

I'm pretty sure I could have kept up the earlier pace for another mile which is encouraging. I jogged the road home as well. Time includes walk down, walk/jog up, and a couple of minutes of stretching.

Monday Jun 23

Note
Total veg out this evening.

Sunday Jun 22

trail 58:08 [3]
A tnt workout in Media. Only ran about 40 minutes of this; every slight uphill had me completely out of breath, heart pounding and about 30 minutes in I took a walk break which I repeated a few more times until about 50 minutes when I hit the final road where I usually walk it in anyway.

The company, as usual, was excellent.

Saturday Jun 21

orienteering 29:30 [3] 2.8 km (10:32 / km)
Yellow course at the DVOA picnic. Had some errors but at least I was running. Even with a 1:10,000 map and my contacts in, I have to pretty much stop to read the details.

Friday Jun 20

map hiking 5:00:00 [2]
More rogaine streamering. Over 1/2 done, close to 2/3. On my feet from 10:30 to 5:30 with about half an hour break at 1 for lunch.

Decided not to tempt fate and do a balance beam act to get across a bridge that is out, but going around was a big detour.

Decided to delete the planned controls on private property across the Mason-Dixon line. I hear the DuPont's can be a bit squirrely.

Saw a fox - it was in the middle of a wide trail and I got a good look before it took off. Very pretty red with black on the tail. Think I saw a second a while later but it was a short enough glimpse that I couldn't be sure.

strength & stretching 40:00 [1]
No THursday TNT again this week. :(

Did the core workout instead. Probably just as well since the weather looks great for tomorrow which means another day down at Fair Hill.

Wednesday Jun 18

map hiking 3:00:00 [1]
Course setting for the Fair Hill rogaine. Some of the fields are mowed but many are not and cutting across was tough work as the grass is up to my shoulders and I really had to lift my legs to get through it. I think they'll all be mowed for the event though. Which is good since I saw a ton of poison ivy growing in them in places. Was going to do one more loop but I was getting a blister so I decided not to. Good thing - about 15 minutes later I was driving home in lightening and thunder.
C • When is this rogaine? 5

Tuesday Jun 17

running 1:00:00
TNT - covered bridge hill repeats with Heather and Alison. Alison did 7 all the way to the top, Heather and I did 5 to the trailhead on the right.

These were hard. I need to do them more often.

I kept hitting the wrong buttons on my watch and instead of getting splits, I kept stopping and starting it. But from the splits I did get, I was about 2 minutes up and 3 minutes down. The rest of the time was the jog down to the covered bridge on the trails, a half mile on the drive to cool down, and the walk back up the hill home.
C • How high? 2
Note
The prickly pear is blooming.

Sunday Jun 15

running 47:24 [3]
2 miles on the drive (5:16, 5:13, 5:11, 4:48) plus walking down and up.

This after a couple of hours of working in the yard. I think I have reduced the amount of grass by about 50% from when I moved in by gradually expanding all the flower beds. And other than the tree I bought to replace the one that had to come down, everything has either been gifts or just dividing or moving and making room for things to grow.
Note
I just made plans to do some orienteering training next weekend. This is good. I haven't been orienteering very much this year so far. I've done a lot of things related to orienteering, but I haven't done much actual orienteering in race mode. While I think I may have needed the break, I'm now ready to get back to it. I think.

orienteering 43:05 [3]
Greg's Graduation O party. A fun little course on the new Fort Washington map.
Yoga/Pilates (Yoga DVD) 40:00 [1]
Felt really good to do this; need to do it more often.
Note
Watching a bit of Jukola. Makes me want to go again.

Whew. That was exciting!
C • Next year, we'll go again. 4

Thursday Jun 12

running 1:12:24 [3]
No TNT tonight. Ran on the drive. Did 4 miles at abit under 11 min pace. I felt really sluggish - worse even than Tuesday in the heat - but I wanted to make sure I did all 4 miles that I planned and didn't wimp out anywhere so I just poked along. Finished with a 4:50 half so that was good.

Saw someone who was the spitting image (now there's a weird phrase) of Eric Bone. Very strange.

Saw a very cool short (under 4 minute) movie while I was stretching afterwards; it's called "Pretty Big Dig" by Ann Troake. Definitely worth the 4 minutes if you get a chance.

Tuesday Jun 10

running 58:00 [3]
TNT - 3 miles on the drive with Sandy plus the down and up. Did just over 10 min/mi pace which was pretty good given the heat and humidity.

A thunderstorm blew through as we were eating though and it's now very pleasant out.

Saturday Jun 7

running 30:00 [3]
Down at Normandy Beach again; running in the sand. 15 minutes out and 15 minutes back. Did about a third in the soft sand and the rest right near the water where the running is easier.

Friday Jun 6

trail 45:00 [3]
TNT - trails at Tyler with Dasha and Bob. Felt okay but tanked after 45 minutes and walked it in.

Wednesday Jun 4

strength & stretching 43:00 [1]
Core workout. Plus pushups and some extra stretching.

Hips have been sore for a few days so trying to remember to do extra stretches every day. It's worked in the past; hopefully it will work again.
Note
Did a bunch of yard work as well. It seems so much harder these days; I never used to feel this wimpy.

Tuesday Jun 3

trail 34:00 [3]
TNT - with Sandy and Heather. Time is approximate; no one started their watch right when we left. Same loop as yesterday; walked a few of the hills.

C • Which Heather? 5
strength & stretching 10:00 [1]
Some stretching and some crunches when we got back.

Monday Jun 2

trail 34:00 [3]
Short loop on the trails.

Probably should have given my knees a break today but needed to let off some steam and pulling weeds wasn't doing it.
strength & stretching 10:00 [1]
Pushups and stretching.

Sunday Jun 1

running 26:00 [3]
More running on the beach - this time barefoot. Took about a 3 minute break in the middle when we turned around and waded out into the freezing water. Dunked myself all the way in at the end.
