Sunday Aug 31

Event: Fair Hill 6 Hour Rogaine

map hiking 20:00 [1]
Control pickup. A good way to end an excellent day.

Saturday Aug 30

map hiking 35:00 [1]
Control hanging. Yep, I had such a good group of volunteers, I only had to do a short loop. :)

Wednesday Aug 27

Note
Ankle is a bit sore.

Spent the evening doing rogaine related stuff. I sure could use an extra week before school starts...

Tuesday Aug 26

Note
Saw the orthopedist again this morning, and things are looking good. Not too much more damage showing on the new x-rays then when I first got the brace (so it must be doing it's job pretty well!) and he figures I should just keep doing whatever I've been doing. Got the new brace approved by my medical carrier and will get a fitting tomorrow. The orthopedist figures he can probably get me a new brace every 3-4 years, arguing that things will change enough that a new fitting would be required that frequently.

Some arthritis under both knee caps was apparent on the x-rays and that is probably what is causing the sharp pains I get intermittently in both knees; he thinks that stretching will reduce the severity of that so perhaps I will get better about doing those quad stretches that I know I should do.
C • brace 7
Note
I still need to add my races from the COCs but it was a really long day at school today and I have no energy and it's not even 9pm. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate boring meetings? I want to do them justice so I'll just wait until I have more time. I particularly liked the middle distance day - it was a really, really fine course.

Monday Aug 25

strength & stretching (Core DVD) 40:00 [1]
C • You (we) did good! 2

Thursday Aug 21

Event: Canadian Orienteering Championships 2008

Note
Hopewell Rocks. Awesome.

Face planted in some mud; can't wait to see the pictures everyone took. :)

Unfortunately, the planting was because of twisting my ankle. :(

Wednesday Aug 20

biking 40:00 [3]
Mountain biking at Fundy. Stayed on a gravel road today - wasn't up for anything more challenging. It had some good uphills (and downhills) though.
hiking 1:40:00 [1]
I parked at a trailhead parking lot for the mountain biking (the trail was not open to bikes) and when I finished biking I thought well I'll just go down the trail for 10 or 15 minutes and then turn around. But I got lost in thought and the trail was really nice and then I kept wondering what was around the next bend and before I knew it I'd hiked close to an hour down to some waterfalls. Back was a little faster as the uphill was easier than the down.

Tuesday Aug 19

biking 30:00 [2]
An easy, but very pretty and fragrant trail in Fundy. Decided not to tempt the rain which started once I was back in my car on the way back to the inn although here at the inn it's almost sunny. Scoped out a few possibilities for tomorrow.

Note
Turns out I forgot the key to the bike rack on the roof of my car. I was sure it was on the same ring as the key to the bike lock that I use to lock the bike to poles and things but it's not. Bummer. Guess the bike has to continue to travel in the car.
Note
I was thinking a little bit about the terrain here in NB and it seems somewhat similar to the Water Gap.
C • Thanks for the analogy 2

Monday Aug 18

Note
Some leisurely walking around the nature trails and such at Fundy National Park on a gorgeous day.

Sunday Aug 17

orienteering race 1:43:42 [4] **** 4.5 km (23:03 / km)
Another challenging course. I took trail options a few times and it was quite worth the extra distance; probably should have done it a couple more times. Aside from route choice, today's errors were all quite small and easily corrected. Still, it's very physical terrain and technically challenging so slow going. But lots of fun and not boring. Thanks to the Smiths and Hotts for doing the event; hopefully it will be good preparation for Fundy.

Saturday Aug 16

Event: Fishbones

orienteering race 26:11 [3] 2 km (13:06 / km)
Fishbones Sprint - Course 2
Fun little sprint course in the rain. Got lucky twice when I made a route choice based on whim - the alternatives in both cases had uncrossable features that I hadn't noticed. Misread a line of cliffs as a trail for my only real error. Didn't push particularly hard knowing there was another race in a few hours. Started to rain at about control #3 but didn't really pour until after I finished.
orienteering race 1:34:29 [3] **** 3.1 km (30:29 / km)
Fishbones Middle Distance
An excellent course in very technical terrain. Lots of small errors and two fairly big ones. The big ones were of the "I'm close but I just can not make sense of the map so have no idea where to go" type, both in a semi-open area up on a ridge. Looking at the map later with reading glasses (and not my contacts) and good light (not the overcast grayness and mist), I can sort out a bit more - not sure if it would have been enough to avoid the floundering. The course was quite physically demanding with lots of steep downhills and high ground cover over rocky footing. The challenge was great fun though and I had a blast. We'll be in the same area for Sunday so we'll see if I learned anything.

Thursday Aug 14

orienteering 51:33 [3]
An excellent CSU training at Franklin Park on my way north with a side trip down memory lane as I took a quick tour of MIT on my way in.

Ian Smith set a fun little course in an interesting little park. The first few controls were not so good (1:7500 took getting used to; my brain was a bit deadened by all the driving), but then I settled in and had a good time. Although I stopped one control short of the end just not seeing it on the map. Hopefully I'll be a bit more focused in Canada!
Note
My sister owes me. I'm staying at her house in Wolfeboro and she neglected to close the screen on the sliding glass doors the last time she was here. So this gigantic spider built a humongous web across inbetween where the screen and door go so opening the door and closing the screen put the web and spider inside. This spider was huge and could fly and was really creepy but I cleaned it all out so I could sleep with the door open. Just thinking about it gives my shivers.

Wednesday Aug 13

Yoga/Pilates 1:00:00
Another good class. Legs were like jelly after a few things. Arms did better though.
C • class 2

Tuesday Aug 12

strength & stretching (Core DVD) 40:00 [1]
Note
And another two icing sessions! I'm on a roll...

Monday Aug 11

trail 35:04 [3]
Short trail loop. Thought it was going to be really, really hard during the first few minutes, but it turned out to be just hard, not even really hard.
Note
Finally remembered to ice...

Saturday Aug 9

Note
Helping Ann and Charlie with some trail work at Hammond Hill. Shoveling gravel and mud should probably count as a workout of some sort.
C • Happy Birthday to you! 6

Friday Aug 8

walking 20:00 [1]
The up and down parts of a long walk around the plantations at Cornell.
strength & stretching 10:00 [1]
Core work.

Thursday Aug 7

hiking 30:00 [1]
Easy hike at Hammond Hill with Ann.

Wednesday Aug 6

Yoga/Pilates (Yoga DVD) 40:00 [2]
Arms like spaghetti today.
Note
Mowed the lawn - it's so easy when I haven't let the grass grow super long! I've also started to get a lot better using the trimmer to edge the walkways and all the flower beds so that went a lot faster than usual as well.

Tuesday Aug 5

running 20:20 [3] 2.0 mi (10:09 / mi)
On the drive.
5:19, 5:12, 5:06, 4:43
warm up/cool down 27:40 [1]
The down and up and some stretching.
Note
Iced once.

Monday Aug 4

Note
Iced twice.

Sunday Aug 3

hiking 1:05:00 [1]
Hike in the Wissahickon as I baby my knees a bit. Covered bridge - Council Rock loop.
Yoga/Pilates (Yoga) 1:00:00
Not sure how long the class actually went but there was at least 30 minutes of hard work with sweat pouring off me.
Note
Iced twice.

Saturday Aug 2

biking 40:00 [3]
8 clockwise and 1 counterclockwise loop around the block that goes down to the trailhead by the horse stables - it's basically down and then back up the hill. Pretty uninspired but I wanted to be cautious in case a) the threatening thunderstorms started or b) my knee gave out. Neither happened and my legs got a nice easy workout. A police car did appear on lap #6 parked by the horse stables and I had to wonder if someone called to report suspicious activity or if it was just random. Whatever, he was gone on #8.
C • Police 1
Note
Iced once.

Friday Aug 1

Event: Northwest Forest Frenzy

Note
Good luck to the juniors and their event!
trail 36:39 [3]
The short hilly trail loop. It's hard again.
strength & stretching 13:30 [0]
stretching
Note
Icing. Haven't been good about it this week and so I'm hoping that logging it will get me back on track.

Knees felt good this morning for the first time this week. Hopefully the run won't put me back to square one again.
