Walked through the night taking only short 10-15 minute breaks now and and again but called it quits at about 4:30am. We walked in picking up one more control on the way and got in around 6:30. (I had it wrong originally.)
Excellent time. Almost stepped on one giant rattlesnake and one smaller one. The giant one rattled at us after Valerie took its picture. Scared me - don't think I've ever heard a rattlesnake rattle. Not sure who moved faster - me up the trail or the snake into the woods.
Decided to spend most of the time on the part of the map that covered the orienteering maps which you could take with you. Made it much nicer to know where all the trails were since the USGS we got was not updated much at all. The net result was that we spent a huge percentage of our time on trails and dirt roads and very little time in the woods. Only made 3 errors, two of which were 5 minutes each (edit: Valerie's GPS says 8 and 15 mins) the other a little longer but got all the controls we tried.
Right hip pretty sore this evening but everything else is fine.
Our route was pretty uninspired but I may try to scan the map tomorrow.
