orienteering race 1:33:16 [3]
I went on-line this morning and looked at the QOC schedule thinking to plan some future jaunts down that way and decided that since Greenbelt was on the closer side that I would go next weekend. It said you had to pre-register (they can't take money in the park) so I went ahead and pre-registered figuring for $5 it was no big deal if I ended up not going for some reason. I went to put in on my calendar only to realize that it was for today. What? Oh, yeah, the DVOA winter meeting I went to last night was postponed a week so it was not the 24th today as I somehow had it in my head. Called Valerie who said as long as I was there by 1:30 I'd be fine and it was supposed to get up in the 50's so looking like a great day. So I figured it was meant to be and I jumped in the car and drove down.
Had registered for the green course and I figured why not, it was too long a drive to just do the brown and I probably wasn't going to do much running so might as well get a good hike out of it (since a long hike was what I had planned for doing at home).
Turned out to be a good choice as I worked hard and was pretty tired at the end but was able to push hard most of the way doing way more jogging than I expected. I almost managed to run the final leg to the finish, but despite Nadim giving me encouragement up the hill, slowed to a walk with about a dozen steps to go.
There was a good bit of trail running on the course which I normally don't enjoy but since I don't know the park, I had to work reasonably hard to make sure I was picking good routes and taking the right trails. And there were obvious elephant tracks to most of the controls once you got a bit close but I still managed to make a few small errors by following footsteps and not being careful enough when I needed to be.
Anyway, glad I made the spontaneous decision to go once I realized what I had done!
Note
And my knee continues to be okay. Right after I finished it stiffened up and walking was tough. But now it feels fine and I didn't even take any Advil or anything. I am doing those knee bends every morning and I just can't think of anything else that would have made the difference. Definitely going to keep on doing those.
Now if I could only find something similar that will make my shoulder behave...
