hiking 2:13:42 [3] 6.87 mi (19:28 / mi) +287m 17:14 / mi

A purposeful hike around the Wissahickon. Mid 70's and just beautiful. The annoying little gnatty things were all out though - kept me moving so they wouldn't swarm me. Despite some soreness from yesterday's workout I felt pretty strong until the very end when I just wanted to be done.

And for once I seem to be on top of most of my various obligations and projects! Wonder how long that will last?

hiking 53:00 [3] 2.91 mi (18:13 / mi) +94m 16:33 / mi

Futzed around all morning and couldn't get myself out the door. Finally decided that I could at least get around the meadow loop and if I was feeling like more I could always go around again. I think lowering my expectations for myself was useful. (I did a few minutes of weeding before starting so I deducted that time. My daffodils are getting ready to bloom!)

biking 22:53 [3] 2.19 mi (10:27 / mi) +71m 9:29 / mi

And while walking around the meadow loop I realized that one, the trails weren't nearly as muddy as they were on Sunday and were in pretty decent condition for biking and two, I could ride the roads over and cut in at the start of the meadow and just do that part of the trail. That sound doable or at least not scary and so I decided I would do a little mountain biking as well. I came off twice - both times trying to go around a corner and uphill over rocks at the same time. But not bad falls so I accomplished my number one goal of not injuring myself.

And I figured out how to use another one of the gears - just have to push the lever slightly again after shifting and it will fall in. But I'm still not very coordinated with shifting - can't remember which way goes harder and which way easier with which hand.

Note

I gave an exam in my Calc II class last week and have been meeting with lots of students the last two days. It was a little bit of a wake-up call for those that had been coasting I think. Anyway, scheduled meetings during the time I usually swim but this way I didn't have to go in Wednesday. My arms were pretty sore in any case (from the push-ups I think) so maybe a good idea to take a day off.

Note

Only a little extra sore this morning. Didn't sleep very well but I'm not sure why. I think I probably should have stretched more than I did. Gained weight - which is usually the case - I just can not stop myself from eating a few hours after I finish a longish workout.

strength & stretching 40:00 [3]

30 min workout session with personal trainer. I can do pushups again! Not many (4 sets of 5 each) but they didn't hurt my shoulder. Progress!!

It's amazing how she keeps things interesting, rarely repeating the same exercises between sessions and clearly building some progressions as I get stronger.

10 min stretching. In hopes that some good stretching today would compensate for not so good stretching yesterday...

hiking 3:45:47 [3] 9.73 mi (23:12 / mi) +326m 21:01 / mi

Training hike with Valerie getting ourselves ready for two upcoming ARs. Goal was ~10miles in around 4 hours and we pretty much nailed that. We took several short breaks for various reasons - bathroom, picture taking, shoe changing, penguin rescuing (see Valerie's log) - but mostly just kept plodding along.

Which is about what we hope to do in the actual races so it's all good.

biking 22:32 [3] 2.52 mi (8:56 / mi) +70m 8:14 / mi

See Valerie! I really did get my bike out. :)

It wasn't pretty but I rode around the streets for 20 minutes just remembering how to shift gears and all. My bike is very old and the gears are a little bent and I can only use a small subset of them but I think it's enough to get me around the AR course in 6 weeks.

I need to 1) build up some seat endurance (just 20 minutes was plenty) and 2) build up the courage to take it on some trails.

hiking 52:06 [3] 2.88 mi (18:05 / mi) +85m 16:34 / mi

And then a hike around the meadow loop after shedding most of the layers I had on. I thought it would be cold on the bike on the downhills but I didn't realize quite how warm it was out. I thought it was about 50 when in reality it's 65. What a beautiful day! All my bulbs are pushing up and the crocuses are all blooming.
