Note

Slid down a steep bank to get across a creek and must have gone over a bees nest because the next thing I know I'm being stung and there are bees in my shirt and in my hair and I keep getting new stings for several minutes.

Really hard to focus for a bit!

About a dozen total, half of which are big welts and half of which are smaller. Today - Saturday - they still hurt and itch like crazy.
1 PM

map hiking 41:53 intensity: (4:34 @1) + (18:28 @2) + (15:47 @3) + (3:04 @4) 1.15 mi (36:25 / mi) +123m 27:21 / mi
ahr:110 max:142

Model event. Learned that it was hard to keep a bearing because there was so much stuff to push you around and learned what clearings looked like - grass on the ground was the surest indicator with clear sky above. There were some gorgeous rings of redwoods with beautiful "clearings" inside but these were in total shade and so just mapped as white woods.
4 PM

orienteering 1:03:04 intensity: (3:11 @1) + (45 @2) + (6:45 @3) + (17:38 @4) + (34:45 @5) 2.28 mi (27:40 / mi) +142m 23:11 / mi
ahr:142 max:181

Middle. Lots of sections of really steep ravines that had to be crossed and one section where I wasn't careful enough about finding a good route and fought through some nasty stuff for a bit but I always knew where I was. Can't say it was a great race, but it was fine with no major errors, just lots of fumbling, hesitation, and fighting through junk. And of course the bees.

orienteering 27:14 intensity: (1:19 @1) + (3 @2) + (1:57 @3) + (20:09 @4) + (3:46 @5) 1.65 mi (16:30 / mi) +27m 15:43 / mi
ahr:136 max:175

Sprint - actual time was 25:57. Happy with how much of it I was able to jog. Not much route choice although it would have been faster to stay to the left of the wall at 12 since the flag wasn't really at the end of the wall. I went left on #1 which might not have been correct but it looked more straightforward.
2 PM

orienteering 40:53 intensity: (2 @1) + (21 @2) + (6:39 @3) + (22:06 @4) + (11:45 @5) 2.03 mi (20:08 / mi) +77m 18:01 / mi
ahr:139 max:183

Short course in the afternoon. I had no oomph left at all and decided to admire the fabulous views of the Three Sisters and Mt. Bachelor instead of trying to jog. Went around on trails everywhere in the beginning. Had to sit down to get out of one control.

hiking 47:09 intensity: (58 @1) + (11:34 @2) + (33:35 @3) + (42 @4) + (20 @5) 2.2 mi (21:26 / mi) +92m 18:58 / mi

To the start.

orienteering 1:12:28 intensity: (41 @1) + (1:47 @2) + (37:49 @3) + (26:09 @4) + (6:02 @5) 3.11 mi (23:18 / mi) +109m 21:01 / mi
ahr:129 max:167

Really fun course - worth the hike up and back down.

Finally remembered how to orienteer with only a few hesitations or small corrections. Just walked but kept up a good pace.

Beautiful terrain and some spectacular views.

hiking 52:17 intensity: (2:04 @1) + (10:04 @2) + (38:26 @3) + (1:38 @4) + (5 @5) 2.18 mi (23:59 / mi) +39m 22:44 / mi
ahr:114 max:151

Back to parking. Really, really beat by the time I got back to my car. All I could do to keep moving.

ahr:126 max:143

My compass work was definitely not good today! And my pace count didn't seem to be working either - sometimes things would show up before I expected them and other times I would stop way too soon. Perhaps I'm just getting careless. Still, beautiful weather and fun to be orienteering.

orienteering 1:37:10 intensity: (44 @2) + (36:26 @3) + (52:18 @4) + (7:42 @5) 4.08 mi (23:49 / mi) +93m 22:15 / mi
ahr:133 max:173

One silly route choice and one major error. On the route choice I thought about going a bit out of my way to take a trail route around a steep hillside but then decided how bad could it be and just went straight. And regretted it. Had to sit down to get down and even that felt treacherous. Then thought I was reading things into what I knew would be a tough control, but my track shows I was way off. Got lucky - after way too long - and found a control later on my course and was able to use that to relocate. I was not where I thought I was!

But the weather is fabulous and it's fun to be orienteering on challenging maps.
