Spinistry's Straight to Hill Gravel Race. There were 100mi, 63mi and 33mi routes. C19 precautions were that groups of 10 started every 15 minutes and no drafting allowed.

The top rider of the day was Emily Newsom who is a pro-cyclist on the TIBCO team. Over the summer & early fall she had been in Europe racing LBL and Fleche-Wallone -- big time stuff. She was the fastest today on the 63mi route in 3:09ish. Lisa chatted with her a bit afterward.

Last weekend when I was riding the the little DBW CX course I hit a bump and heard a concerning knock from the bike. At the time I inspected everything but could see any issues. Well, right from the get-go today I could feel that the saddle tilt had shifted. It was was a little annoying but I eventually forgot about it.

On the road near the Itasca landfill I was surprised by a big hole. I thought for sure that I was going to bust my wheel and/or go over the bars. I managed to escape but the force of the bump caused my left brifter to shift and twist. I'll have to reposition the brifter and retape; when I do I'll need to do a careful inspection of the carbon to confirm there are no cracks.

3 of us from my group pulled ahead of the others. A guy from Elevate slowly pulled away and was gone. I ended ended up following the other guy about 400m back for a good 60k. When we hit the hills I slowly reeled him in and we were sometimes side by side or one would fall back a bit. On the steeper hills from 75-80k he pooped out and dropped. Later he told me he was having a pity party for himself. From about 87k on we had a a lot of headwind and that eventually did me in. Pitty-party guy eventually caught back up with about 2k to go and finished about 100m ahead of me. At that point I just wanted to cruise in. I wasn't bonking or overly dragging but it was also clear that pushing was going to really hurt. My legs are going to be dead for a couple of days.

I don't have final results yet. However, suffice to say I was faster than some, slower than others. I will say though that was my fastest 100k-ish gravel ride. I'm usually 4:15-4:45 when meandering around on my own.

I like the route. A good mix of asphalt, gravel and dirt roads. Squirted two dogs in the face.

Lunch was at Up in Smoke BBQ in Hillsboro. I give it a C+. The Red Potatoes were the best part and that's not what a BBQ place should be known for.
