Bike 55:00 [3]

Very easy ride with Mathias around WRL. Last one too as he, Malin and Elias are moving back to Sverige. I wish them well but I am very sad to be losing my training partner.

Whooped. At least I know I didn't leave anything on the course yesterday. My training leading up to the TT did not leave me rested and ready to run. It seemed like I was resting plenty but I rarely felt fresh over the last few weeks. ??

Orienteering 2:25:00 [3]

Team Trials long. Started conservative both physically and technically. This led to very tentative and sub-optimal route choices. I was also having trouble dealing with the vegetation. But at least I wasn't booming. That is, until I saw the dreaded JJ. I passed him in the campground on the way to C10. Before leaving the trail for the final attack I reminded myself that this was a "transition" (trail running to detailed O) and I needed to be careful. But instead I lost 3-4 min. Got myself back on track on the following controls but with more tentative nav.

On the long leg to C18 I again passed JJ in the campground but then lost map contact and missed some trail junctions and took more silly routes. Got myself back together for the final approach to C18. On the way out of C18 I see JJ coming in. The curse of the JJ held off for one control but then hit hard on the way to C21 -- kaboom!

The rest I did ok and chased Ross to C24, C25 and F.

Orienteering 1:15:00 [3]

Team Trails middle. Quad ok. Sore charlie-horse pain for the today (Sat) and Sun but it didn't distract me from running.

Started off ok but hints of an unfocussed mind appeared on the leg to C4 when the dark green rattled me a bit. A good bit off bearing exiting C4 and C5 but was still hanging in there. Checking off reentrants on the way to C7 but a brain fart caused me to turn left (down) instead of right (up) into the reentrant that contained the control. I ran right by the darn thing. 7 min later Eddie escorted me to the control. After that I bobbled a few more and my legs deserted me.

Orienteering 55:00 [3]

Team Trails sprint. Quad grabbing during long slow warm-up. Thought about bagging the race with the hope of it feeling better for Sat. & Sun. Decided to give it a shot. I was able to run ok but not at top speed. This didn't make a difference at the more "technical" controls, C8 and on, but it held me back on the early long running legs and the final sprint. Bobbles on C6, C8 and C11. Happy that I got to run at least.

Walked/jogged around the terrain south of the parking area for a bit of training for Sunday.

Note

As it turns out, kick-ball is not as benign as it might seem and is not a good activity to add to one's pre-race taper (coaxed into playing at the math department picnic). Strained my right quad and can't walk without a limp.
