Note

Started having sick symptoms on Monday. Tue and Wed were days for constant nose running and sneezing. Thu. was coughing day. Today will be, hopefully, decreasing coughing day.

Typically, as soon as I don't fee like death I try to get out for some activity. The trouble is that while I am functional it seems like the illness lingers for longer. Thus, for once, as an experiment, I'm going to try to "stand down" until I feel mostly better. Hopefully, tomorrow I will get out for some easy activity.

Orienteering 2:35:00 [3]

Possum Trot. 16.5k in 2:25:19. 2nd in a light field. Logging 10min of WU.

C1-C3: Straightforward. Mellow start running easy.
C4: AP is showing error time. I walked up the road to look ahead and study potential skips.
C5: fine
C6: I think I exited 3rd. I could see Patrick leaving. Hit the trail. Spent some more time walking and looking ahead to skips. Other than C18, not any easy big triangles that I could see; however, C18 looked relatively easy. Decided on C22 and C24. Unfortunately, I walked about 200m farther than necessary. Up and over to see a pack come in the the control in front of me. Poop.
C7-C14: Running with Spike, Patrick and another guy all staying pretty close. Easy nav.
C15: Pulled away on the climb.
C16: Pulled away some more on the climb only to be way too conservative by taking the left trail route to avoid the green. Came into the control just behind Spike.
C17: Caught back up to Spike.
C18: Again way too conservative with climb and vegetation. Went wide to the right....
C19: ... and as I popped out the field I see Spike 250m up ahead. Poop. Stopped briefly at the water drop, left my hat, gloves and e-stick, drank some Nuun, headed off chasing Spike. Get the the control about 50m behind Spike, look at my right hand to punch, no e-stick. "Where's my e-stick?!!!!" I say to myself. "NOOOOOOO!" Back up to the water drop. Pull the e-stick off my glove. Back down to C19.
C20: Went wider to the right than I intended but somehow had a good split.
C21: Easy.
C23: Climbing the field I see Spike go by. Then Patrick went by. Ugh. Down to the control.
C25: Easy
C26: See Patrick climbing up when I still have another 100m to go. No problem finding it.
C27: Out to the field on the right ASAP. Out to the big trail up top. Patrick is way up ahead. Start grinding. Seems like I'm slowly gaining. Patrick punches ahead of me still a solid 100m ahead but I see him walking the climb. So...
C28: ... no walking the climb. Grinding, grinding. He takes the right hand approach to the control and, I learn later, hesitates in the veg due to seeing Spike. I went left and then down by the dry ditch, can clearly see the thick veg, and punch just ahead of Patrick. Exiting I see Spike coming up to the control.
C29: Gotta push now. They don't seem to be coming with me. Down the road, left turn, another left turn, up through the field and this time I'm not going to be shy about the light green. Well that didn't work out. It was dark greenish/black on the approach from the west. Serious bashing to get through. Visibility about 3 ft. Luckily my aim was true and when I crossed the second ditch the control wasn't too far off. But there goes Patrick. Ugh.
C30: Chase Patrick out, across, up and entered the field. But then I hesitated thinking the control would be close to the tree. Patrick punched just ahead of me.
Finish: Patrick backtracked whereas I went straight down, across the creek, up the the road, and then to the finish. I think Patrick got caught in some veg.

In the end, the back and forth with Patrick and Spike made it interesting. Fun day. Perfect running weather: cold standing around at the start with a windy 30F but running was good. Veg. was thick and pokey; my legs are pretty cut up. Still, I always like running around Shawnee Mission Park.

Orienteering 40:00 [3]

O Kansas sprint at Johnson Country Community College. Chilly, windy but sunny; the cold felt good. Fun course. About 20s in hesitations. Running felt ok but my stride was short and tight -- no flow. 2.5k in 14:52.
