Bike 4:19:51 [3] 115.57 km (26.7 kph) +1035m
ahr:126 max:156

Wason Ranch to Continental Divide. Left at 0718 so it was pretty chilly (44F). I was underdressed but preferred that to be overheated once it warmed up. Sam rode with me on the outbound until Broken Arrow Ranch; hence, the slow pace on the first leg. I had a goal to see if I could beat last years time from Freeman's to the top and I just squeeze in. I confess that I thought I would be faster -- I was working. Only used my 28 tooth sprocket on the steeper section leading up to the overlook. One the last long section from North Clear Creek I reeled in a guy who had started from Freemans. Name was Rod Meachum, spends his summers in Creede but hails from Austin. He sped up and we topped out together. After a short break Rod was continuing on to Slumgullium pass and tried to coax me along; I think I could have made the climb but I do not like descending on that road so I begged off.

No speed records on the way down due to a slight headwind and the cracked road. Always fun. The trip back from Freeman's was ok for the first 30 min but I didn't enjoy the last 40: getting warm, a bit more traffic, I was tired, and the expansion cracks in the road had worn me down.

Good ride overall. I thought I felt better than last year at the end but now, later in the day, I'm still feeling quite drained.

Someday it would be nice to stay somewhere long enough such that I could acclimate to the altitude. I just always get my ass kicked.

Cloths: usual summer gear but included a vest on the outbound.
Food: Good breakfast of oatmeal, yogurt and banana. One cliff bar and two packages of blocks. I wonder if I should have more protein?
Drink: 5 bike bottles with Nuun.

Wason to Freeman's 33.2k: 2015= 69min. 2016= 85:38
...to the Divide 24.2k: 2015= 68min. 2016= 65:16
...back to Freeman's: 2015= 40min. 2016= 39:17

Bike 40:20 [3] 20.43 km (30.4 kph) +62m

3rd annual cycling training camp at Wason Ranch, Colorado, aka, Sam's place outside of Creede. Reassembled my bike and went for a test ride. Handle bars kept slipping and I really had to over-tighten the bolts. Amazon Prime to the rescue; there will be a new FSA OS-99 stem with titanium bolts waiting for me when I get home. While the 50g weight savings is nice, the titanium is what motivated me to upgrade. My sweat causes all the steel to rust.

Row (S33-SS:3x20) 1:14:00 [3]

3x20 = 3 [ 8 (2 at 20 + 30s drills) ] / 2
+ 5 [15strokes at 28, 30, 32, 34, 36 / 15 ]

Another south wind day. Legs are tired. Didn't feel like doing the 30s pieces at 26 so I did various technique drills. The hard 15 stroke pieces at the end went well.

Row (S**-Th: 4 x 6) 1:10:00 [3]

4 x 6 = 4 [ 3 min at 24 + 3 min at 28 ] /6

The Garmin was being weird this morning so I just grabbed my watch and went by time. South wind with me on 1 and 3 and against on 2 and 4. Held the stroke rate pretty well and pace was good when I had the help of the wind. I was lacking a little power so I was a little off going into the wind. Tired butt (glutes).

Lift (CoachK-10) 45:00 [3]

4/5 because that was enough and I was getting bored.

ahr:139 max:174

OMP. New best. 1 full lap + around and up the Bath House hill. Slightly slower average speed though. Seemed like no one wanted to be at the front -- maybe the dampness put people off. I ended up at point along Garland Rd and then Winsted. Hit Loving Rd hill first but was soon passed by the 15 remaining guys; they have a better punch on the short hills. However, I was able to grind past a couple on the longer West Shore hill and the whole group came back together. On the flats I ended up in front again at a couple of times. I clearly don't quite understand the tactics others are using. Regardless, of the slower ave speed, I'm still happy with making it farther this week.
