I couldn't handle another day of climbing at Eldora so I got up early and headed out I70 to Frisco. Even early on a Sunday it slow downed at Loveland Pass.

Nice sunny and not so windy day but still cold. I waited until 9:15 to start when it had warmed up to 8F. The snow was definitely faster than the last couple of days which was a relief. The groomed corduroy was slightly frozen but whenever snow had blown on to the trail it was the dry slow stuff. That made for some tricky descents as my skis would first get slide on top of the corduroy and not track, or get trapped in a grove and take me where I didn't want to go, or I'd go through a little blown snow and be abruptly slowed. This caused one wipe out. But this is all nitpicking -- it was really good skiing and the best of the weekend.

I went out Crown Pt and back on Olympic Link.

Today's devious plan, if I thought I could mange it, was to do a timed 5k. When I first started out my legs were sore and my balance was a little off but I warmed up enough that I decided what the heck.

Started out at the junction/cut-through where Frisco Bay links up with RJs Vista. Up Frisco Bay, around to RJ Vista, down RJ Vista, around the loop at the bottom, all the way back up RJ Vista, around to Frisco Bay, almost exactly back to where I started.

So that's that, whatever it is. It was enough for today so I skied back to the nordic center. And that concludes the 16-17 ski season.

Was out much longer but I subtracted time for photos and map checking.

Decided to do something different while also giving my skating knee a break. Rented classic skies and worked my way out to the start of Rising Sun. It's a trail marked on the trees but it isn't groomed at all and is "single track" picking through the trees. Luckily the snow was still slow because the trail went straight up the slope. Part way up a couple of downhillers came through -- not sure how they got way over there because I was still far to the left. Then I passed a couple of snowshoers who were heading down; the trial would have been easier on snowshoes. Eventually I stopped climbing and got to the junction with Robb's Short Cut. It was really overblown but in for a penny, in for a pound, and so off I went to the Tennessee Mtn Hutj... which turned out to be lock! There were a couple of axes and a wood pile so for some additional fun I split some wood. It was only 11F at the base and the wind was howling so it was quite nippy up top. After chopping a few logs it was time to get back into the woods.

After taking photos at the hut my phone wouldn't start up again. Apparently, the windchill was too much for the iphone.

Continuing on Rising Sun was interesting as the trail was gone most of the time. Just kept plugging along having faith in the trail markers and map. Eventually, I started going down which was a little tricky because there wasn't room to even do a proper snowplow. Had to plant my butt in the snow a couple of times to stop. Down and down, eventually making it back to groom trails and back ot the Nordic Center.

Had a pretty good pulled pork sandwich in the alpine lodge. I should have spent more time digesting but I was impatient and got going again at 12:30.

The snow was a definitely faster than yesterday but still borderline green wax. My knee was a giving me little reminders, which was some good bio-feedback for better technique -- really have to get weight over the ski even when climbing. When tired it is easy to just keep the legs splay out with body weight staying somewhat more center. It takes more energy to keep getting over the skis, back and forth, but not doing so puts unbalanced load on the knee.

Anyway, worked on that when I had the air to do so. Had a nice loop. Had some nice speedy downhills. I may not be able to climb like the locals but I'm pretty good descending -- hit 37kph.

Towards the end it clouded over and started snowing again. I was happy to call it a day -- the cold wind drains energy.
