DP = Dad Peloton, that's what the "kids" at Bikes Plus called it when I asked for logistics. Actually, they called it the "Dad Ride", similar to calling the Tue morning group the "Old Man Ride." In both cases, it's plenty fast enough for me.

The DP as I'm going to call it starts from W. Lauther up on Mockingbird at 0600. Lucky for me this was actually sleeping in compared to the last few days. Unlucky for me was that the "kids" had told me the wrong meeting place. Once I figured that out I rode the other way around the lake to meet up. Coming around Winfrey Point I saw a peloton's worth of headlights coming at me. I turned, stayed to the side, picked up speed, and then jumped on the back of a line of about 30 guys.

Overall we were riding about 5% slower than the OMP has been the last few times I made it out. This allowed me to stick with the group the whole time. Indeed, I was even up front rotating through the leading pace lines and taking my turn pulling at the front.

The DP does an extra little hill on Shook inserted between Loving and West Shore. I hold my own on the shorter hills but I always loose a few places going up West Shore. However, the DP didn't t blast away at the top like the OMP so I never lost contact.

On the second lap during a slow spot one guy came up and said, "You're riding strong. You've improved a lot over the last couple months." I'm not sure if that's true -- today was just a touch slower and more manageable for me. Nevertheless, that was very nice of him to say.

Row 1:05:00 [3]

Last row with Angie in Austin. Another nice morning if one can excuse the sweatiness. Mostly easy. Practice 4 starts of 5 + 10 with the 10 at 32, 34, 36, 38. 36 seemed to be the sweet spot.

Last meetings of conference then bugged out early because the last session was somewhat redundant. 3 mornings with reveille at 0500 has left me pretty pooped.

Row 1:04:00 [3]

3 x 10min
1st: 5 at 24 + 5 at 26
2nd and 3rd: 4 at 24 + 4 at 26 + 2 at 28

Same wake up schedule as yesterday. I was kind of lazy on the first piece and we only pulled ahead of the other 2x (two women) at the end. Put a bit more energy into it on the 2nd and 3rd and we were well ahead. Good rowing and all my body parts are holding up. Hot though. Actually, not so hot but really really muggy. The last 3 minutes of each piece took mental discipline. Stopping to rest wasn't helpful because that meant no air movement. Other than that though, good row; Austin is such a nice place to row (when there aren't a bazzillion kayaks and SUPs).

Row 1:22:00 [3]

Up at 0500 and at ARC by 0530. Nice steady state row with some P10s and a few starts. Nice morning but very humid. Sweating buckets.

Row 35:00 [3]

Started rowing about 6:50. East down around the island and back. Crazy clouds and some lightning off in the distance. Rained once I got back to the hotel.

Storing wet rowing cloths in a hot car all day is not good for the nose.

Row (2x) 1:00:00 [3]

At Austin Rowing Club with Angie Houtz.

A conference in Austin makes it very convenient to get some training in with Angie. We are doing the mixed C and mix D 2x at nationals. I left Dallas at 0630 and we were rowing around 1030. It was already too hot and the traffic on Town Lake was already getting nutty. We rowed easy down to dam, back to I35, back to the island, then back to ARC.

We took some quick breaks in the shade of I35. Mostly easy at 18-20 but we worked in a half dozen P10s. My left butt hurts on a borderline not good way -- have to be a bit careful I think.

Row 1:48:00 [3]

Sometimes X [ 5 at 16 + 3 at 18 + 2 at 20]
Sometimes various technique drills.

My HR would go over 135 if I put pressure into the 20spm pieces. Otherwise, steady consistent rowing. Dead calm and clouds the whole time; a July gift.

Bike 45:00 [3]

Around the lake in the late afternoon with Lisa. We were out an hour.

Lisa's cleat on her right shoe was effectively coming off. I didn't think it would be good for her to be relying heavily on her left leg (had the recent knee work) so I have her my right shoe. I put hers in my pocket and rode with just one shoe, which wasn't all that fun. Better for me to not have fun though and not mess with Lisa's knee.

On the Santa Fe trail paramedics were walking a couple of cyclists out the Gaston/Garland mall. As we rode by we were surprised to see it was our neighbors John and Martha. Martha was in a good bet of heat stress. She didn't end up going for any other medical care though. They drove her home and John rode home.
