Run 23:00 [3]

Some of the ski trails on the Neighborhood Birkie Loop have been regroomed (new asphalt). There are still sections requiring high clearance rskis but every bit helps.

Row 1:00:00 [3]

Run 30:00 [3]

To escape the evening heat I ran on the indoor balcony track at SMU. It's very hard and my quads are still flat so this was a very unspringy run.

XC Sking 53:00 [3]
shoes: Pursuit

It snowed so I went skiing.

(Balance was quite good for a first ski. The balance exercises I have been doing while watching TV appeared to have paid off.)

Run 10:00 [3]

Then it melted because it is still 94F so I went for a short run.

Bike 55:00 [3]

The alarm went off at 0600 to go row. The alarm was reset to 0730 at 0600:00.1. The only thing left to do on a hot evening was to get on the bike. However, I believe snow is in the forecast for tomorrow.

Hotter than Hell 100

* Starting temp around 79. Finish temp around 95. Nice clear sky with plenty of sun. Usual highly annoying south wind. I estimate the road temperature to be 1x10^6 Farengrades.
* Stayed at the Witchita Falls Motel 6. Much more convenient than being in Bowie. Nicely renovated but still kind of stinky even though it was a no-smoking room.
* Got a lot of good sleep during the week but restless last night (not sure why) and only got about 5 hours. Not helpful.
* Left room at 0533 and parked at 0547. Perfect.
* Breakfast: 20oz coke, muscle milk, banana, cliff bar, kind bar, raisins
* Road food: cliff blocks at 1:10, cliff bar at 1:45, more blocks up to the 76mi aid station. After that I wasn't feeling so good and trying to chew stuff didn't seem all that appetizing. Perhaps a mistake.
* We had a fly-over at the start by two T-38 Talons from Shepherd AFB.
* I didn't bring any electrolyte capsules. Perhaps a mistake.
* Previous years seem to have bigger groups with emptiness in between -- at least that is what I remember. This year seemed to be smaller groups with plenty of people scattered in between.
* A train held things up at 43k when we were turning onto 287. When it passed and we got going again it was slowing and came to a stop so that 2 other trains going in the opposite direction could pass so there must have been more stopping for folks behind.
* Riding along 287 couldn't have been more "West Texas." Hot blacktop. Scrubby terrain on both sides. Trains on one sides. Pumpjack oil pumps chugging on the other side. Riding into a dusty town called Electra, whose entering sign said, "Pumjack capital of Texas."
* Had time and HR visible on the Garmin. My goal was to keep my HR around 140ish. I was successful up to Electra.
* Heading N from Electra is slightly downhill, there was a tail, and it looked like I was in no-man's land. I figured I should crank a bit and catch the group in front of me. Took me the whole north bound stretch but it was fun and I felt in control. HR went up again.
* At 2.5 hours my but starting hurting, which I purposely trained to avoid. 3.5 hours I could have understood but 2.5 should be butt easy. Annoying.
* Then we started heading east with a side wind. Hooked up with a couple of groups, one before the 52mi rest stop and then one after. I was working harder with my HR now bouncing around 150. Probably not good. However, all the way by Hell's Gate and up to the turn east again at 100k I felt in control and not struggling.
* However, I then started feeling hot. I had to let groups go because even though my legs seemed willing my HR would spike over 160, which is no bueno. I couldn't seem to get it to stay close to 140 anymore. Just too hot. I pulled into 73mi station, filled bottles 7-9 and stuffed my jersey with ice-cold towels. They helped for about 2min.
* Time to head north into the wind. I hooked up with 4 guys and we got into a rotation. However, I had to let them go just before the 84mi aid station. Too hot. I stopped for more cold towels but they were unsatisfying. Now I was on my own and in survival mode. Periodically a small group would pass by, periodically I'd pass someone limping home slower than I.
* At around 4:30 I felt leg cramps coming on. Had to stop as both hamstrings locked up. Get going again monitoring systems: keep HR down, slow down, am I still sweating, is my brain clear, repeat. Stopped at the 91mi aid station for cold water, less to drink but to dump on my head. Back to system monitoring. Cramps forced me to stop again at 4:45, this time both hams and quads. Get going again and back to system monitoring. One more time. Going up the stupid overpass into town both legs locked doubly hard. I waited and waited. Eventually started walking a bit to get them working again. Got back on my bike at the top and was able to soft pedal it home.
* Finished about 50min slower than last year and that was not much fun either.
* Got in the fire hose to cool off. Ahhhhhhhhh. Went inside the convention center with AC to cool off so more. Had a big coke. Ahhhhhhhh.
* In sum, this was kind of sucky. The only way I can allow myself to do this again is to fully commit to keeping my HR is LSD range, like 140 dangit! I'm not a hot weather sort of dude and I can't crank out hours on end in the heat. It would be nice if I would finally learn this. Plan B would be to just stay home and eat ice cream, which would without any argument or possible rebuttal be the smarter thing to do.
