Lisa and I met Pat for the 0655 DFW -> Denver. Pat's son Jimmy had traveled from Penn State to Baltimore last night and this morning BWI -> Denver (Warning, name dropping alert. Jimmy stayed with Pat's younger brother, aka "Dude", aka Dennis McDonough). Upgraded the midsize SUV, which was not midsized at all but really small, to a full-size SUV, which is really mid-sized, because we couldn't fit skis luggage and bodies. Drove to Winter Park and unloaded Pat and Jimmy who were downhilliing today, which is well known to be a the slacker form skiing due to all the gravity and stuff. Lisa and I did the groceries and then headed to Snow Mountain Ranch.

It had been lightly snowing all morning and I was skating in 5-8cm of new snow. Luckily it was warm enough that it was slippery snow so easy to glide. However, the volume made sure I didn't glide to far. Eventually came across Lisa who was digging and trudging herself out of a snowfield. She was waist deep in powder. I asked her what she was doing and she said, "I made a mistake."

Then the snow and wind came in earnest and we had about 20min of almost white out (about 30m of visibility). I was in all lightweight clothing and my hands got painfully cold. To keep warm I would ski ahead of Lisa for a bit, then back, then ahead and back, etc. The snow eased a bit the last km but the wind was howling.

After I warmed up I got another jacket and dry gloves and went out to do battle a little more. Now there was an easy 10-15cm of snow and so not really great skating. However, I felt it was important to let the wind know that if I want to ski, I will ski, and that's that.

We have a condo at the Winter Park resort that is really nice. Jimmy is great cook. Life is good.

Warm out. Slight south wind gave a bit of help for 3.3k of the first and anti-help until the end. Pace definitely slowed in the anti-wind direction. On the second one the wind had died a bit and my pace was about the same both with and anti. Overall, it is interesting how variable my pace is; the time trace is quite wiggly. I assume that is due to my changing stride technique. I've never tried to keep track of what I'm doing when so I can't make any conclusions.

Fort Worth Nordic Center with Pat. The cold front went through last night with lots of storms. There were still a few rain showers on the way over and by the time I was going through FW snow flurries. We skied the first 45 min in more flurries and a stiff wind. However, by the time we finished it was sunny and about 40F.

The goal was LSD with time on our feet more important than speed. Easy pace and plenty of chatting. We may have burned more lip calories than leg calories. I finished still feeling quite good and could have kept going without a problem.

Broke a ski tip but luckily not the pole. We finished the lap and took a quick pit stop at Pat's to boil off the old one and put on a spare that Pat had.
