Spinistry: Missing Mid-South Gravel Race (refers to a regular spring race that is missing this year due to Covid). Usual Spinistry Covid accommodations of small groups going out ever 15min. I started at 8:15. 100mi riders (all 5 of them) started earlier. Lisa rode the 27 min route and started at 8:45; she added some on at the end to hit 50k.
Warm day even by TX standards: 67F, high 70s at the finish. Luckily it was cloudy, even had some misty rain during the second half. The wind kicked up too but it wasn't too bad.
AP is again severely cheating me on the climb, which was in 750ish meters. No long climbs though, just a lot of short ups and downs. The course was decent enough, nothing spectacular but a good mix of road and gravel. We had one muddy dirty stretch and one stream crossing that were fun.
I started with a group of five but I found the pace just a big too high; I wanted to keep things easy today. I let them go and rode solo for a long time eventually passing some folks who started in the group before me. Then I caught up to Norm from Plano who had started in my group. We chatted for about 90min; that was fun. At about 90k I slowly pulled away. By this time I had kind of had enough. East of Whitney the route took us through some really run down neighborhoods that were quite a mess. My energy held up ok but my butt was killing me. I'm not sure if is the new saddle or the fact that this was my first long ride and first gravel ride. I hope the latter. But boy did my butt hurt. Also, the last 10k my left knee started aching; I didn't enjoy that either. On the whole though, a good day of riding.
We went to Hootin Hollerin BBQ in Whitney. The place was very barebones but the food was fine. I had two brisket sandwiches, pinto beans and fries. We gave it a B.
