Orienteering 1:50:00 [3]

Day 2 of US Champs at Remarkable Flats. Before the race I felt better than yesterday but still quite flat. Spent the race expecting to hit the wall at some point but I'm happy to say it never came. I started at a conservative pace and just kept plugging along. Nav. was pretty good. I had two hesitations but otherwise I just bounced off hills and aspen groves until I hit the controls. When I found my mind wandering or low-O2 induced confusion I slowed and regained my composure.

Overall, I'm happy with my navigation. 2008 has been about developing good consistent technique and a routine that is easy to visualize and reproduce and is portable from one map to another. It's not ingrained but I am happy with the direction I'm going. Now I need to get my legs back.

Orienteering 1:35:00 [3]

Day 1 of US Champs at Diamond Bay. Missed C2 by 40 sec but then got on track. Navigating decently and made a concerted effort to stay with my own routine even as I was getting passed. Physically started to fade on the climb to C20 and slowed even more than my already plodding pace. However, I kept my head focussed and continued to nav. well. However, on C24 gravity was just too strong for my legs and I couldn't hold my line on the hill and came down way too low. Physically, I felt quite poor but I kept working to maintain good nav. and I finished cleanly, albeit slowly.

I was quite nauseated the second half of the course; maybe I drank too much water. ?? Didn't really feel all that hot the rest of the day and made Lisa go to the AGM without me.

Orienteering 52:00 [3]

East Pelican Bay course. Again worked on good technique: Lans-O (simple routes), Tero-O (high visibility features), and 100m-O (memory O plus reading ahead). More fun at Pelican Bay.

Orienteering 1:05:00 [3]

Did the Pelican Bay training course. Very enjoyable. I really like that map.

Walked around the First with the Most map for about 50 min. I like this map too.

Done with all my O by 11, showered, ate some lunch, and headed off for the Snowy Mtns for the afternoon. Boris and Kat climbed Medicine Bow peak in the morning and I would like to do the same the next time we visit.

Orienteering 1:39:00 [3]

One-man relay in 43 min. I think I was 8th. Ran a little quicker than I had planned but I still walked all of the hills. I put a little more effort on the last loop when I was running with two youngsters and Hillary. Clean except for the lower marsh control when I aimed off farther than necessary. In general, worked on keeping a good routine on each and every control.

After a bit of rest I went out to train on Bisbee Hill (56 min). Worked on a discipline control routine and made sure I didn't run off in the wrong direction or without a plan. One RC was too conservative. Executed a nice longish leg around the hill. Next control I had a brain fart. Overall, decent.
