Event: EMPO - Vischer Ferry

Orienteering 1:26:23 [3] ** 6.98 km (12:23 / km) +51m 11:56 / km
shoes: Columbia Romero trail runners
Score-O at Vischer Ferry set by Eric Hamilton, 90 minute time limit with exponentially increasing penalties. Temp in low 60s with light rain, actually pretty nice day to be out despite some mud. The birds were really active and I saw a neat duck of some kind (with 5 ducklings) - had a really tall mohawk. Might have been a meganser.
Despite living about 3 miles from this park as the crow flies (and about 10 miles driving distance) I've never been to one of the meets we've had there. This place is basically a maze of river, canal way, swamps, backwaters, etc. all laid out linearly, so there's lots of doglegs in and out to features. Part of the map wasn't really mapped which messed me up.
I made stupid choices and went: 104-61-62-60-63-53-52-36-32-55
Most of the bags were on the east end of the map, I probably could have swept those for just as many points with half as much walking. There was definitely some creative control placement at work where you had to be really careful if you were on the correct side of a body of water otherwise you might be tempted to swim. Also its been a long time since I've been on a 1:15000 map and I really underestimated that, unfortuatenly once I committed to a route choice headed west there really wasn't any going back.
No real problem finding the bags, though the white woods were mid-green. Out by 62 there was an unmapped 4x4 trail that was parallel to the one I was looking for and I lost about 5 minutes figuring that out. The elevation changes were dramatic - steep earth banks all around (and muddy), probably shaped 150 years ago (or longer) by some combination of flooding and canal construction.
