7 AM

orienteering 10:04 [3]

world cup challenge. before the race I thought John wouldn't use world cup stuff two years running that would be silly. But I checked out the form guide anyway. Knowing the 3 first round opponents helped.
I saw Serbia of to the East inside fred jacoby so thought that would be a good place to start. then Japan made sense. Germany looked a long way out it meant an extra control to not get it but there were plenty closer. next New zealand on the way to Ghana. gave us 160points then decission between denmark and england. Demark was decided and we reached USA just before Whoop Whoop. back into the TA with whoop whoop. Peter took ages in TA tying shoe laces and whoop whoop were almost out of sight when we started
8 AM

cycling (mtb leg) 1:12:00 [3]

MTB is where things slowed up whoop whoop disapeared pretty quickly only spotted them once after leaving fred jacoby. small hiccup when we got to the fence but soon found mb1. crossed the pipeline to see a pair coming back towards us, must have gone the other way and couldn't find the pipeline crossing. straight onlong the pipelin/mundabiddi to 2. Was stuggling to keep up to Pete and he had to wait for me quite a bit between 2 and 3. even the bitumen after 2 didn't help me much.Pete brought us the long way into the TA2 with extra climb :(
9 AM

orienteering (equatorial) 52:19 [3]

decided to run in bike shoes ( big mistake but survived)
Didn't really have much of an idea which countries are on the equator. figured equador and indonesia as the only ones I knew for sure and peru was not.. Decided to head for indonesia. On the way there realised we should plan the other controls as well so headed for uganda. Yay! wasn't sure about Sri lanka didn't think so but wasn't sure so with the better safe than sorry approach checked to see the bad news. So our course was set follow the remaing countries round. found the sadistic indonesian control and others were suddenly near by. saw dolf and mark? then GB. was passed by Dolf and mark on the way to somalia only to see the stop short as we went past. mark and GB caught us at brazil as we overshot the gully a little we must have hit it at its flatest point. followed GB up to equador and across to kenya.
10 AM

cycling (MTB leg 2) 1:49:25 [3]

Jumped on the bike to find the rear tyre flat. ( sabotage :) )
changed to tube to find a small sliver of metal in the tyre.
Didn't realise the map 3 had MTB controls on it. so Pete naved to with 30 meters of 5 on map 2 messed about trying to find 5. eventually found it while there Brain Damage told us map 3 had it on. Lucky just in time to get the big short cut to mb6 we over shot 6 when pit decided the gravel pit wasn't big enough. completely failed to use the south ledge map. but found our way well enough. bumbled through the crumpler challenge finding most of the letters before puzzling it out. over shot mb nine expecting to see it from the track. the mb 10 and back up the hill Pete waiting several times and giving me a push once.
12 PM

orienteering 35:24 [3]

finally back to foot O did most with out compass Pete made sure we went east between 5-6 and west between 7-8 but that is all.
We knew there were 2 teams in front of us but whoop whoop had lost a map ( we saw it on the way to MB3) so if we could over take the team in front of us we could be first pair. first control we crossed the pipeline then followed the pipeline down to the track and up to 1
2. followed the track up to the road the straight across to control 2
3. ran the track round to just past control 9 the followed the contour across to the watercourse
4. follwed water course up on east side. spotted the other pair leaving the control as we approached.
5. headed toward obvious clearing. punched just as the other pair were leaving
6. slow starting so was 100m behind other pair headed east as we got close to the knoll were 7 is saw the pair infront of us going south of the correct course lost sight of them as we approached 6. we knew then we probably had first pair.
7. easy up the knoll
8. just headed east hit it spot on by shear luck.
9. was back on the track we had already seen.
10. followed track back then in from the track
11. up to the track east of 10 followed that down to the pipeline
12 & 13 duh!

paddling 1:32:00 [3] 14.0 km (6:34 / km)
shoes: finn molokai

didn't try too hard today just a consistant even pace. Only 2 mins slower on the way back. It felt like I could hold the pace quite a bit longer.
