Friday Aug 31

Cycling long 3:05:00 [4]81.34 km (2:16 / km)
Mile Square to Smith to W Bloomfield Rd, S to Cty Rd 19, W to Honeoye Falls, W on HF Rd. #6 to Rte 15, S on 15 through East Avon to Lakeville, L on S Lima Rd to Poplar Hill to Jenks, Jenks/Chase to Doran, N on Doran to Bragg to Quaker Mtg House, to Cheese Factory and back up W. Bloomfield.

The scenic hamlet of the day is South Lima. Pretty little hamlet, although no central park or church area, since the one small church in town is now someone's house. Very interesting stone barn on the right, looks like an old potato storage barn, nice steepled roof, quite impressive.

Event: ROC - Night-O & Sprint

Orienteering race (Sprint) 17:24 [4]2.2 km (7:55 / km)
weight:201lbs
Sprint at Webster Park. Went out a bit too fast to start. Bobbled #3 since I didn't look at the map closely enough and approached from a bad direction. Considered going directly at #6 but decided to approach from the safe route. Ditto w/ #7.
Orienteering race (Night-O) 59:30 [3]6 km (9:55 / km)
Headed W at start, across bridge to field and #114. Attempted to cut through open woods to 115 but ended up off course - didn't search too long and went directly on to #113 and #112, originally wanted to hit #116 and do a big loop around the outer edge but dropped that strategy.

From #112 went roughly over to SW corner of Park. Decided to skip #124 and #110 to save time even though I was not far from either one. #121 I think was on the wrong knoll but found it anyway. Headed back up to #106, and was running across the causeway (not really a bridge, but rather slightly higher ground on the N end of the swamp), hit a root and fell flat on my face, and noticed the flag right off the edge of the path - I was originally heading to the trail junction suggested by the circle location and got lucky. (Twice so - I didn't bruise anything more than my ego when I tripped over the root). Stayed on main trails at that point back to the lodge under time.

Final route:

102-101-114-113-112-111-121-122-123-106-105-104-103-Finish, no penalty

ROC Sprint - Webster Park - Splits

Friday Aug 24

Soccer warm up/down 30:00 [2]
Soccer race (Game) 1:30:00 [4]
Last game of the season, vs. Churchville. Played cenral midfield.

First half we played on our heels the whole time, trying to keep up with the play. Churchville had a couple good opportunities and couldn't put anything away. Eastside had some decent midfield play but virtually no pressure on goal. Churchville struck first, with a poorly defended corner kick headed into the goal from the 6-yard line.

In the second half, Eastside changed from its 3-5-2 to a more attacking 3-4-3 and succeeded in putting more pressure on the C-ville backline. C-ville played more on their heels and was less able to dictate play. After some runs up the wings which were broken up, George took a run up a wing, pulled the goalie off his line, and made a nice cross to a wide open Daniel on the weak side, who put just enough force to push the ball over the goal line. The last 15 minutes saw some furious midfield back and forth, but both goalies stood firm and the game ended as a tie.

Final score Eastside 1, Churchville 1. Good season guys.

Soccer warm up/down 30:00 [2]
Soccer race (Game) 1:30:00 [4]
Game against Pittsford. Played central midfield.

This match was evenly contested, with both teams playing well. Pittsford drew first blood 10 minutes in on an Eastsider defensive lapse that put their striker one-on-one with Jonni, who had no chance.

For the remainder of the 1st half and most of the second Eastside had the better of the flow of play, with a number of missed opportunities. Most notably, George missed two point blank shots inside the 6 yard box - one directly off the goalie and the second off the top crossbar. Yours truly took one from 25 yards out that curved in and struck the top corner of the crossbar. Jeff had a few chances in the box but the Pittsford goalie held firm. Finally David took an unmarked give-and-go inside the 10 yard line and buried it.

Score stood at 1-1 until 3 minutes left in regulation when the Pitts striker took the ball around the D and caught Jonni way off his line, rolling a shot by him from 15 yards out.

Final Score Pittsford 2, Eastside 1. Disappointing loss.

Event: ROC - Score-O

Orienteering race 1:00:17 [4]5 km (12:03 / km)
weight:201lbs
Score-O at Ellison Park. Plan today was to cover N section of park first and then proceed to pick off S controls. Distance is approximate only.

Grabbed 8 off the bridge quick, then headed N on Mike's heels. Took 23 and headed to 19, found quickly although it would be pretty hard to miss that hill. 18 gave me a little problem since I ended up on a trail parallel to the one I should have been on, had to backtrack, finally found it. Then went along the millrace for 17 and 22.

Climbed the hill for 15 and then countoured a pretty steep countour from 15 over to 16 - I probably should have just gone back up to top, since it was pretty slow going. After 16, went down the hill to 20 and then around to try to find 14.

I blanked on 14. Simply couldn't find it. Backtracked and started over twice from the trail junction as an attack point. after two shots, I gave up and headed down to more open area. In retrospect, there were more trails than on the map, and I'm pretty sure I must have been attacking from the wrong trail junction.

Anyway, crossed the bridge and headed up to 12, down the road to 11 - overshot it and had to come back since I was being sloppy at this point. Went to the road, grabbed 9 by the tennis courts and came back to the Island Shelter 17 seconds over. I briefly thought about fording the stream but thought better of it.

Final Tally: 8-23-19-18-17-22-15-16-20-12-11-9-finish

I have no idea how I did relative to everyone else, but I would be very impressed if anyone got them all.
Orienteering warm up/down (Flag Pick up) 1:55:00 [3]3 km (38:20 / km)
Picked up flags on S part of park. This ended up being more of an adventure than the actual race.

Could not find #2. I am sure I was in the correct re-entrant, but I must have been standing right next to it and just couldn't see it. It was dark under the trees, cloudy, and getting toward dusk, so this isn't so surprising.

I was kicking myself for not bringing my headlamp.

Ran out of gas with about 15k left, so last leg was pretty leisurely - in preparing for this one, I was more worried about hydration than calories.

Game against Churchville. Final score Eastsiders 0, Churchville 0.

All week we were concerned about having enough bodies for this game. As of Wednesday, only 9 had committed. Through a mix of cajoling, peer pressure and guilt, Korhan and Roberto agreed to play, although both were hobbled by various injuries. We started the game with 13, which turned out to be barely enough.

While the score would indicate this was a snoozer, it was very tense. Churchville was fit, had plenty of subs, moved the ball effectively through the midfield, switched fields quickly, and by and large ran all over us. Each time they moved through the midfield, however, John P. and the rest of the defense held just enough to deflect any opportunities, and Jonni came through with solid goalkeeping, helped by the crossbar at least once. It didn't help Churchville's cause that they had nobody who could finish with a goal. If they could, we'd have been toast.

Without Jeff, George, and Larry, we weren't a full squad either, although Memo had a spectacular volley from 20+ yards out that rang off the crossbar.

I was thrilled to get out of this match with a tie, as good a team as Churchville is. We play these guys again in two weeks, so we'll see if we can get a better result with a few of our key people back.

Game against the Rovers. Played central midfield, my normal position. Felt good running, even with the heat.

Throughout the game, David & I controlled the midfield. The only place the Rovers could get anywhere was up the wings. I had a few nice distributions to Jeff, but he missed two point-blank shots at the goal and was called offside a few other times so I missed getting any assists. Rovers scored first on a fluky goal that bounced off at least two defenders before ricocheting into the back of the net.

The Rovers backline was weak all day and left their goalie, who was actually pretty strong, with a bunch of 1-on-1 chances to stop. Tony finally broke through and picked up a bad clear and stuck it in before half.

The Rovers were sloppy on the offside trap, slow on the backline, with fewer subs, and in the second half it cost them. Carmine put an open breakaway in, Tony put another one in, and George ran one through the defense from sweeper. Finally one of the Rovers defenders took down Roberto in the box and Jonni converted the PK. But at that point it was pretty much over.

The Rovers are a good team, but they didn't play particularly well today. Final Score Eastsiders 5, Rovers 1.
