Saturday May 31

Event: ROC - Durand Eastman Park

Orienteering 30:00 [1]1.5 km (20:00 / km)
Shadowed Riesa as she did the White course. She did pretty well, really moved quickly in some sections to the point where I had to break into a run to keep her within sight.

Had to explain what the streamers were all about - she ignored the taped route to #5 and wandered all the way back up to #1 to pick up the road. Other than that, didn't help at all. She seems to be getting the contour idea.
Orienteering race (Mango 2 course) 40:26 [4]3 km (13:29 / km) +140m 10:56 / km
Shorter of the two Mango courses at Durand Eastman. Clean course, except for #6, but not particularly fast. Got sloppy at #6 and lost a bunch of time relocating. For some reason I was thinking "spur" rather than "reentrant" so I was looking in the wrong spot - I did the same thing on #1 and #3 - probably the way the map is drawn. Nice flag placements by feet, none too easy, and lots of climb. Good workout.

Lunch Loop
Cycling 30:00 [3]11 km (2:44 / km)
shoes: Panasonic CX
Ride to game at Thornell
Soccer 1:30:00 [4]
Game against Churchville. They also came into the game undefeated.

First half defended the downhill goal, but still managed to put one past the keeper towards the end of the half, with Dave burying a short rebound. A few other chances got banged off the crossbar or shot directly at the keeper.

For the second half, had the hill to our backs and so should have had the advantage, but couldn't put anything away. Ben took a pretty setup and fired over the bar, but nothing more dangerous than that. On the other side of the ball, Churchville played well in the midfield but couldn't get any closer than the 18 and had a series of long lobs that our keeper grabbed easily. The last 15 minutes saw a furious C-ville attack, but to no avail, the defense held.

Final score, Pittsford 1, Churchville 0.

Cycling 1:17:00 [3]27 km (2:51 / km)

Ride from work to the Chase Corporate Challenge at RIT. Took canal trail from Fairport out to UR, then picked up the old Erie-Lackawanna railway bed over the canal and the north spur of the Lehigh Valley Trail (who knew it came this far north?) then Crittenden to East River and down to the CCC. Beats the shuttle bus.
Running race 31:00 [4]3.5 mi (8:51 / mi) vdot: 34.4
Chase Corporate Challenge. Nice easy pace, got stuck in a rather large crowded pack of folks doing 8-9 minute miles and was too lazy to try to break out, so had a lot left over at the end. Which is probably OK, since I still had to ride home. This would be the first road race I've run in at least 6 years, and it wasn't too bad, given that I don't particularly like road running in the first place.

Things I noticed about road racing: (1) drafting doesn't help much in running, (2) being in the pack doesn't give you that charge that it does in cycling, and (3) anybody who starts off in the 7-minute mile group and is walking after the first hill (and there were a few) needs to be zapped by a cattle prod.

Cycling 1:27:00 [3]27.5 km (3:10 / km)

Ride home from the CCC, no wind in my face in this direction, just clouds of gnats. Followed E River to Crittenden, then LVT to the E-L railbed to the canal trail back to Bushnell's Basin, then Thornell over to RR Mills.

Pleasant enough, except for the gnats.

Wednesday May 28

Walking 1:05:00 [2]6 km (10:50 / km)
After looking at my log, I realized I have neglected walking in favor of cycling lately. Went up to Thornell on the Pittsford trails.

Soccer race 1:30:00 [4]
Game against Canandaigua. After the first half, tied 1-1, but had much better of the flow of play. Into the wind and sun, Koen had two he should have put in, plus numerous chances for everyone else that we struck directly at the keeper.

2nd half was entirely different. Koen put one in a few minutes in on a very pretty setup, followed in quick succession by John Z. Two more followed after that, and a number of other chances that didn't get in the net. Final score 5-1, easily could have been much worse.

Played wing D and midfield - starting to get used to everyone.
Cycling 1:15:00 [3]24 km (3:08 / km)
shoes: Panasonic CX
Ride to game, then over to Thirsty's, and home on the canal trail.

Commute to work

Wednesday May 21

Note
(rest day)
Took another day off. Bike maintenance day again; switched the Panasonic back to a cyclocross bike. Already mostly set up for cx, with low gears, cantilever brakes, and top-tube cables. Added knobbies and took off the old touring tires. Put on headlights and rear lights so I can do night training on this one. Also switched the concor saddle back to the Panasonic and put the new Fizik Arione saddle on the Trek.

Now I just have to get time to ride!

Monday May 19

Mountain Biking 1:20:00 [3]21.65 km (3:42 / km)
shoes: Giant Sedona
N on back trails to East st, across Mitchell to marsh, trails and sidewalk back to village of Pittsford, then back on canal to the Basin.

Need to tune up the Giant, and maybe get some new tires. The old Timbuk2's are getting worn.

Sunday May 18

Event: ROC - Irondequoit Bay Park - West

Orienteering warm up/down (White Course) 30:00 [1]1.22 km (24:35 / km)
Shadowed Riesa as she did the white course. Behind her @100' or so. She did pretty well considering it was her first time doing it by herself. Every now and then she would ask me what a symbol meant and how to read contours, but that was it. Very hilly for a white course, BTW.
Orienteering race (Orange Course) 36:00 [5]2.7 km (13:20 / km)
Ran the Orange course at Irondequoit Bay. Had plenty of opportunity to practice running on the contours, and used the skill very effectively in a very hilly park. Also used the Nike trail runners with sheet metal screws in the soles, and the traction on the hillsides was tolerable.

Hit the controls without too much trouble. #8 seemed to me to be too close to #6 on white, but since I had seen #6 on white course already, I knew that couldn't be the one I was looking for.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take my split times.

Saturday May 17

Cycling long 3:17:00 [4]87.8 km (2:15 / km)
weight:201lbs shoes: Trek 2300
Started late on the ride today, so didn't go quite as long as I wanted. Started off on Mile Square to Smith and Mendon Ctr. Got caught up in a pack of biathlon racers ("Yellowjacket Racing" by the signs on the road) so I drafted on them for a while, which was nice since the wind was pretty stiff. They kept going on 251, so I split off to stay on Men Ctr - to Sheldon, L on Lyons to Pinnacle. At this point I didn't keep track of the roads, but generally headed W until I got to East River (I was on Jeffords & Rush-Henrietta Townline for a while, but there may have been more).

Headed S on E River to 251, R on 251 past Industry towards Oatka Creek Park, but headed off S on W River Road, took a R on some road (South?) which looped around Dugan's Creek and came back out on W River Road anyway. Stayed on W River to Rte 5, took L and merged back into Rte 20, went through Avon & Lime and came back on Bragg/Quaker Mtg House/Semmel/Taylor/ Mi Square.

Luckily thought to bring a Clif bar, otherwise probably would have hit a BIG wall on the way home. Note to self: the Apricot-flavored Clif is excellent.

1st long ride on the Trek and was very happy with it.

Friday May 16

Soccer 1:30:00 [4]
Game against Greek Americans. Ended w/ 3-3 tie, on Jeff's goal with a minute remaining in the game. Down 2-0 in the first half, so I think we were very happy with the tie.

I seem to be getting tracked into wing back with the new team, a position I haven't played since high school. I'll have to start learning a new position, I guess.

Thursday May 15

Mountain Biking 1:23:00 [3]25.04 km (3:19 / km)

Sunday May 11

Cycling 1:45:00 [4]48.7 km (2:09 / km)
weight:207lbs shoes: Trek 2300
AM training ride, through the park & out Log Cabin to Fishers/Phillips/251/Willis Hill Road, then out Strong to Bennett & left on CR39 to the village, back out W Main to 64, through Mendon to Van Voorhis.

2 distinct rides - going out to Bloomfield ran into a stiff headwind, so mentally seemed like an uphill plod the whole way, turned around at the village and seemed like a downhill sprint all the way home. Overall time wasn't far off the average 2:15 (I'd like to be closer to 2 min/km on the shorter distances, but we're not there yet)

Off to rehydrate and get ready for the Scout-O
Cycling 32:00 [4]14.55 km (2:12 / km)
shoes: Galli
Ride to O-Meet at Mendon Ponds, Probst - Mi Sq - Smith - Mendon Ctr - Canfield
Cycling 26:00 [4]12 km (2:10 / km)
shoes: Galli
Back from Mendon Ponds O-meet, felt a bit slower than the ride in.
Orienteering race (Green Course) 1:00:16 [4]4.9 km (12:18 / km)
Green Course at the Mendon Ponds Scout-O. Decided to drop down a color today, rather than doing the Red course. The prospect of another 2km and longer road legs didn't appeal to me after 60km on the bike this AM. As it turns out, 1-8 were the same on both courses.

Started off slow and lost a few minutes heading too far S, then changing my mind halfway to the Devil's Bathtub and deciding I really wanted to go around the N side of the Bathtub, so I went up to the top of Cardiac Hill, then backtracked up to the swamp crossing then around the W side of the swamp through the woods to the stone fence. Just lookin' to pile up the mileage . . .

3 flustered me a bit b/c the number was incorrect. Punched anyway and did a quick loop to convince myself that it was the only possible feature in the region. Was pretty sure it was the right control anyway. 4 was clean, but getting to 5 I made the mistake of taking the trail right along the edge of the swamp W of the esker. Trail was pretty much impassable, and I almost lost my shoe in 3' of muck.

6 took a little longer than it should have since I hit the watercourse too far N and had to slog back down, again in marginally passable marsh. 7 ended up too much like an in and out dogleg since I approached from the road. Remaining controls were pretty clean. All in all, the running was slow, but the navigation was better than usual. (Coincidence?) Will post splits later.

Saturday May 10

Event: ROC - Scout-O & Regular Meet

Note
(rest day)
Took the day off. Went to catch the Red Wings game & fireworks in the PM. Wings won 3-2. Kids loved it.

Friday May 9

Soccer race 1:45:00 [4]
Game against the Rovers at Grace & Truth Park. 2-2 tie. Managed to build a two goal lead on Koen's two solo goals, but then barely held on for a tie when Rovers scored two of their own. Played wing midfield. Poor substitution pattern, ended up with a very tired team and very fresh subs who couldn't get into the game!

Thursday May 8

Mountain Biking 2:45:00 [3]44.58 km (3:42 / km)
shoes: Giant Sedona
Auburn Trail to LVT to Rochester Junction & back. Fingers got a little cold, and some fog in places, but otherwise very pleasant.

Sunday May 4

Soccer 1:10:00 [4]
Last indoor game at Webster, against Inter. These are the same guys that we lost to last week, and a week later they are still faster, younger and more skilled.

Treated it as an opportunity to work on the basics for Friday's game.

Saturday May 3

Event: West Point A-Meet

Cycling 1:45:00 [4]47.3 km (2:13 / km)
shoes: Trek 2300
Out Quaker Meeting House to 65 to West Bloomfield, across on Baker, back through Ionia to 64 to Taylor. Short ride on the new bike to make sure everything's aligned. As it was, the trek saddle was not comfortable. Got back and swapped it out for the cheap (but comfortable) Concor from the Panasonic. Much better ride. Also still getting used to the new Look pedals and cleats.

All in all, for the first real ride of the year, nice speed. Will have to take the Galli out later so it doesn't get jealous of the new kid on the block!

Friday May 2

Soccer race 1:45:00 [5]
First game of the season against Penfield Rangers. Won 3-1 on three nice goal from midfielders (Dennis, Mark, and John). Played left defense most of the game which was out of position for me, but so what? Win's a win.
Mountain Biking 1:15:00 [3]23 km (3:16 / km)
shoes: Giant Sedona
Ride to game, from game to Thirsty's (does that really count as training?) and then from Thirsty's home.

Thursday May 1

Walking hills 40:00 [2]
Powder Mills, hills S of Woolston, easy hiking
