shoes: Panasonic CX
Commute to work
Cycling 1:15:00 [4]30.71 km (2:27 / km)
shoes: Paramount Fixed Gear
PM fixie ride. Up RR Mills, East - Van voorhis - out Clover to Smith, S on WB to Taylor - E on Cheese Factory to 64 - E on Taylor and N on Mi Square - Probst - RR Mills.

Also trying out the new HRM, just out of the box. Need to collect 1) resting HR and 2) recovery time. Kept the entire ride between 75% - 90% max. I also need to figure out how to get the workout summary off the HRM. I think I have to save it first.

If we didn't have gadgets, life would be boring!

Wednesday Jul 30

Walking 1:10:00 [2]6.5 km (10:46 / km)
Thornell loop

Monday Jul 28

Walking 2:35:00 [2]
Long hike through Arrowhead & Swamp Trails, up 96 towards the Basin, then back to the Fish Hatchery, down the Ridge Trail & back up Woolston.

Sunday Jul 27

Cycling 2:50:00 [4]79.95 km (2:08 / km)
shoes: Trek 2300
Sunday AM group ride. Started off with Steve and Mike, picked up with John G and a new guy Ivan at Van Voorhis & 64, headed out 64 to Smith -WB - Taylor - Cheese Factory, S on Clover through Honeoye Falls, then straight out on HF Rd #6 to 15 in East Avon. Originally was going to head E on 5&20 and S on Poplar Hill but ended up staying on 15 towards Lakeville, then S. Lima Rd through the hamlet of S. Lima and N on Poplar Hill, E on Jenks - over "Jenks wall" (an very short steep hill of @20% grade over 150m or so - just enough to temporarily force me out of the saddle and in a lower ring for a few minutes) across 15A, then N on Doran - Bragg - Quaker Mtg House - Taylor - WB - Smith - Mi Square, etc.

Saturday Jul 26

Walking 45:00 [1]3.5 km (12:51 / km)
down to RR Mills & back

Friday Jul 25

Walking 2:05:00 [2]7 km (17:51 / km)
Map hiking Mendon Ponds. Spend a good amount of time bushwhacking the N section of the park, up by the Thruway.
Soccer 1:30:00 [5]
Game against Churchville. When playing a better team, we need to get the breaks. We didn't, they did. C-ville dominated the midfield most of the game, but two of their three goals were ref gifts - a PK on who knows what and a goal with two players clearly offsides. Frustrating.

Final Churchville 3, Pittsford 1

Thursday Jul 24

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]21.5 km (2:47 / km)
shoes: Galli
Started out RR Mills - Park - East - VV - S on 64 to Smith & S on WB. Unfortunately at WB & 251 I blew a flat on the rear tire. Luckily, I was carrying an extra sew-up & even more luckily it actually held the air pressure. I've never used my tubular spare in the 20 years I've ridden the Galli. Since I didn't have a lot of glue left on the back rim, I took the ride back through Mendon very slowly. Made it home OK though. Too bad, b/c the first half of the ride was fast.

Will order a new tubular and replace it, but for the next week or so I'll have to go back to my spare clincher wheelset on the big G
Walking warm up/down 45:00 [1]4 km (11:15 / km)

Wednesday Jul 23

Event: ROC - Webster Park

Orienteering race (Score-O) 58:00 [5]
Score-O at Webster Park. Cool, wet evening. Stuck in traffic so got in just before the start.

Started 86-87-85-84-83-96, then crossed the road and hit 90, back on trail to 91 and the first time loss. Headed toward this one from the east and a thick undergrowth of viny ropelike plants over fallen logs - made it difficult even to walk, much less run. Got back on trail and went to 92 then all the way around to 99. N to 95 then across a little swamp area to 97. Walked right past the flag and didn't see it, the turned around and there it was - one of a couple "uni-directional" flags (along w/ 91). At this point went N to 82-81 and back a couple minutes early.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 29:30 [4]1.67 km (17:40 / km)
Time was something like 29 mins and change - I forgot the exact seconds. Happy to finish in under 30.

Got 1 cleanly, but then had a bear of a time getting to a runnable patch of forest over to 2. I was turned around a couple times and ended up slogging through too much undergrowth. Lost a good amount of time there - straight through would have been easier. 3 was no better, finally went out to the clearing along the road and started from there. 4 was a bit easier though I whacked my ankle painfully on something, no damage though. For 5-6-7 seemed to pick the portions of the stream that looked 1' deep but were actually 3' deep. For 8, went up the hill right at the stream and approached from the W side - my first good decision of the day! Went through too much underbrush on 9, was happy to be back home before it got dark.

Monday Jul 21

Walking 1:45:00 [3]8 km (13:08 / km)

Game against Canandaigua at Red Jacket.

Pretty much dominated this one throughout. Our goalie had to make 2 saves by my count. We kept the ball on our feet, Cdga had 1 sub on a 90 degree day, we had 8. Our sweeper played forward the whole game and missed a PK, etc., etc.

Final score was Pittsford 3, Canandaigua 0, should have been a whole lot more. Almost no pressure was on our goal at all.

Thursday Jul 17

Swimming warm up/down 30:00 [1]
Easy swim

Wednesday Jul 16

Cycling 1:25:00 [4]35.75 km (2:23 / km)
weight:203lbs shoes: Paramount Fixed Gear
RR Mills to East - Van Voorhis, S on 64 - W on Smith to Mendon Ctr, then 251 to Chamberlain - Taylor - WB - Cheese Factory, back to Mendon to take shelter from a thunderstorm - 64 - VV - Home.

Nice thing about having a speedometer on the fixie is that it's effectively a cadence timer as well. For the gear I have (39:15, I think - have to count it sometime) 22 kph = 80 rpm and 27 kph = 95-100rpm.

Tuesday Jul 15

Mountain Biking 45:00 [3]12.7 km (3:33 / km)
shoes: Giant Sedona
Riding over to Garnsey/Crescent Trails
Walking 1:05:00 [3]6 km (10:50 / km)
Hiking around the Crescent Trails near Woodcliff

Monday Jul 14

Cycling long 4:24:00 [4]117.93 km (2:14 / km)
shoes: Trek 2300
One of those days where I felt like riding til I got lost. Headed down RR Mills to Log Cabin to Fishers - Mi Square - Taylor - Cheese Factory and S on Quaker Meeting House, then Martin to York S for a bunch - name changes a few times on the way - then R on Stone Hill (very bumpy with new gravel - avoid in the future) and L on 15A to Hemlock Lake Park for a water stop. Continued on 15A down the length of Hemlock Lake to 15 in Springwater, and at this point decided I wanted to head over to Spencer Park, so I picked the first L heading up the hill, and ran into a Bopple-esque climb that I simply didn't have the legs for. Took a break halfway up near the Springwater water tower. Finally finished and took a L at the top, and decided to stay near the top of the ridge and head roughly NE. Finally ended up on 37, which is a much more gradual climb.

As they say in the movies, don't try this at home. Springwater to Spencer Park, uphill all the way>

Didn't actually go to Spencer since the road was closed but headed down toward 20A and then into Honeoye, grabbed some Gatorade and food at the QuickStop, then headed N up Allens Hill Road over Allens Hill to Taft - Sand - 5&20 - N to Ionia and back home on 64 to Taylor to Probst.

My shoulders are really sore.

Sunday Jul 13

Note
This is so annoying I'm not even going to log it - "pulling pool furniture and flower pots out of the deep end of the pool that some $^#@$ punks threw in there last night." (Underwater aerobics, maybe?)

What is it that makes teenagers do stupid stuff?

Saturday Jul 12

Event: CENTRAL NEW YORK ROGAINE XVIII

Orienteering race (Rogaine) 11:00:00 [3]35 km (18:51 / km)
weight:202lbs
CNYO Rogaine at Hammond Hill State Park. Teamed with Ken Bridgeman to do the 12 hour category. Overall, very happy with the pace (didn't jog much this year but kept a nice hiking pace throughout and didn't spend very long searching for controls), the map was much better than last year's CNYO map - like actually matching the terrain - and very reasonably placed controls, challenging but not bingo. Very enjoyable - even with a nagging head cold - distance is a WAG.

Our route - Started w/ 28-46-75 (first bobble - got messed up on the map scale and misread the distance at first)-24-44-67-17 water stop after a slog through a stinging nettle patch - 33-69-27-23 (toughest placement of the day - "vegetation boundary in a reentrant") then back to the hash house for a dinner. Chowed and lounged for a half hour, then went back out and hit 47 (took a long time - very subtle stream junction) - 42 (trail on map did not exist from 47 to the road junction) - 32 (after civil twilight, slowed us down in the woods) - at this point we cut short to grab 5 controls close to base camp - 40 ("lone conifer in a meadow" - only challenge here was getting through 2 electric fences and curious horses back to the road) - 13 - 41 (would have a tough time on this one in daylight - stone pile in a thicket - but lucked out and saw the reflector from 200m away) - 21 - 18 - back to hash house with a bit less than a half-hour to spare.

Great job by CNYO on the organization on this Rogaine!

Friday Jul 11

Mountain Biking warm up/down 35:00 [2]10.5 km (3:20 / km)
shoes: Giant Sedona
Bike to and from soccer game
Soccer 1:30:00 [5]
Game against the Greek-Americans, basically my old teammates from last years' Eastsiders team. I thought about bailing tonight and resting up for tomorrow's CNYO rogaine, but Ray and Mike had already bailed so we'd have been short three defenders, and I couldn't leave the guys hanging.

I always enjoy playing the Greeks b/c they play good basic European style ball, with crisp passing and nice ball movement. We don't as well but we usually have more subs and can run teams into making mistakes. It almost worked again today. Although the Greeks put up two pretty goals early, to go up 2-0 at half, we started chipping away in the 2nd. We grabbed one on Koen's pretty shot, but unfortunately couldn't get the equalizer. Final score Greeks 2 Pittsford 1.

Thursday Jul 10

Cycling 1:08:00 [4]33.16 km (2:03 / km)
weight:202lbs shoes: Galli
I'd been feeling under the weather for the last few days and just needed to get out and ride, so took the Galli out after work. Was feeling a bit slow going up Fall Meadow, and had to take it real slow on Mile Square and Smith - they had just put down the fresh gravel and oil - but once I got past Rte 64 I started hammering - voila - stress is gone.

Followed Smith to Mendon Center, across Clover to Sheldon and back around to Clover - flew down Clover to Willard, then up by Mendon HS and back down Mi Square and RR Mills.

Without the 4 km of gravel, I think I would have hit the 2 min/km mark.
