Running (3 x Cemetery Laps) 36:03 [2] 4.1 mi (8:48 / mi) +184ft 8:26 / mi
weight:162.4lbs shoes: Adidas adiZero Hagio 2

Hmm, weird weight bump. Extra coffee and water this AM, I suppose.

Lovely day. I need to stop reading about exotic, international ultra races. I'm getting restless. :)

Running (8 x Grass Laps) 30:48 [1] 3.28 mi (9:24 / mi) +23ft 9:20 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

A few laps in the crisp, sunny morning.

My TR245s just started developing the same insole issue (same left side, too) as my last pair: insole slowly slides to the rear during a run. And this pair I never (well, rarely) took the insoles out, which was what I thought the issue was. New theory: shoes are permeated with dust, dirt, and sand, creating a bit of a 'ball bearing' effect between the insole and the shoe. Going to wash them and see if they recover.

I'm also going to (as I said before and never did) contact Inov-8 for any thoughts, and maybe new insoles ... they don't actually sell them, which is annoying. Aftermarket insoles generally try to do 'too much', and weigh way too much.

Three months is nowhere near the lifespan I expect from Inov-8s, even with what I put them through.

Running (2 x Crum Laps) 1:44:36 intensity: (20:00 @3) + (1:24:36 @4) 11.49 mi (9:06 / mi) +1391ft 8:10 / mi
weight:159.8lbs shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 (2nd pair)

Perfect weather for some speed work ... plan was to push the first 15k (did 1:22:51/8:55s) of the woods section to remember 'going fast(er)', to prep for the Dirty Bird in 2 weeks. Went very well: negative splits all the way and PRed the two laps by another good bit (1:31:47/-3:20), and lap PR too at 45:02.

Leaves were a constant worry. Up to 10 inches of the things, hiding roots and rocks.

Note

Penn Orienteering! I just met with Jason Erdman, the head of Penn Recreation's Outdoor Adventure. He's working on their spring schedule, and is interested in adding some O.

The awesome: they have transportation for students to get to events!

At this point I'm thinking of doing two or three scheduled trips to spring DVOA events, with me and another volunteer or two to help with beginner training and after action review. Easy to get in the Penn Rec schedule, which immediately gets details to gym members: all undergrads and fac/staff members who use the gym. And there's an e-mail list for the Outdoor Club, and other social media sources that have huge followings. We might target market to the Penn Running Club, too.

If we feel ambitious, a pizza and O night at the gym in the winter, as well, to do some learning, with an indoor O event (like they do in the winter in Sweden). And/or a private event at Schuylkill Center, through DVOA's ES team, or just through me and my minions. You know who you are. ;)

And if there's interest, Jason's a master at teaching and encouraging students to form and run sporting clubs. I volunteered to coach. So maybe in a few years West Point will have a serious contender. :)

Running long (Street w/Backpack) 1:39:24 [2] 10.06 mi (9:53 / mi) +210ft 9:41 / mi
shoes: Adidas adiZero Hagio 2

A run back from Rothman Institute in Bryn Mawr: a happy "you're allowed to run" run. First time on the street in a long time. Kind of fun, as I listened to Siouxsee & The Banshees and then Bach's Brandenburg Concerto in the drizzle, wandering through suburbia. A surprisingly straight path, given how lost I was at times! Two tracks joined, thus the wonkiness at the beginning. Darned rain and plastic bag and heavy backpack.

I've got arthritis, moderate in right hip, light in left hip. Need new hips at some point, but not yet. IT band issues due to my compensating for the arthritis.

So: someday new hips. But until then, I'm good to go with any exercise. PT session in the works to learn how to properly strengthen things, and work a bit on range of motion.

Thanks so much, KSwede, for the inspiration and recommendation. I'm so happy to know.
