Note

Erk. Calf wonk is back ... maybe from sprinting for the train yesterday? On top of Wednesday's hills? Hmm. Taking it easy, hydrating, a few vitamin I, some light stick work. This is bad timing, but just need to back off till it's 90%+. Tomorrow? I hope so, as it's likely to be an awesome day, after so much mist and chill.

In the meantime, might as well think about more races. Medium or Hard? 4 weeks before Eastern States:

Decided to move forward with a distance upgrade to my gear, including new:

  • Shoes
  • Vest
  • Watch

Shoes: Salomon S-Lab Sense 3 Ultra

These are TWO versions old ... Salomon hasn't made many changes since 2014 on these (I confirmed with a Salomon 'Ambassador' I know), and they were worn by many, many incredible long ultra champions, so I'm going to give them a go. Went with the older version because the were $125 on Amazon, vs $180 for the newest (5) version.

    Vest: Salomon S-Lab Sense Set

So many vests to choose from, I went with the lightest of the bunch, at ~4oz including 2 x 0.5L soft flasks. On sale for $96 (ouch!) from Amazon. I generally have a very sweaty back, so didn't go with a pouch (2 layers) in the back. Can always stuff a jacket under the mesh.

Watch: Garmin Fenix 3 Performer Bundle

Bought this International version Garmin Fenix 3 (not-HR) Performer Bundle from Handtec in UK for a cool $200 savings over North American versions available in US. Before purchasing, I wrote to support@garmin.com and asked them what the difference between the two models was, and they said 'the wall charger prong unit is the only difference'. Wow! The watch should be here tomorrow (2 days from UK!!), the rest of the stuff next week sometime.

    Why?

I'm really excited for all of this new, expensive gear. I was quite conflicted (ask hughmac3 about my watch agony) about spending this much money on 'stuff', as till now I've gotten away with cheap shoes and pretty much a single hand bottle for every run. But I'm transitioning to much longer races (100k in 2 weeks! 100 miler in August! More in the fall if those go well), and I've been a bit nervous about my gear options. And once I made the decision to buy a $370 watch, the other stuff was easy. ;)

While it's needless to say, I'll say it anyway: I'm now extremely confident in my gear*, and can (once I fit it all into my 'system') get back to thinking about the important stuff. Although I wish I had a sponsor for this stuff.

    Hooray!

weight:157.8lbs shoes: TNF Ultra Cardiac (10.5D)

HTFU cool and rain run kind of day. Felt pretty good once I got out there, after one lap of really easy, then two a bit quicker. Pretty well recovered from Hyner.

Fell twice and got pretty muddy ... the TNF Ultra Cardiacs performed pretty well (very, very comfortable) except once the mud got above about 1/2" with significant slope and no roots/rocks to grab. But I think these are Eastern States worthy.

Nice negative splits ... easy when you start off reeeally slowly.
