Running 50:00 [3] **
ahr:162 max:173 shoes: Adidas Response
I found new trails!! With a map even!! Went exploring on a mostly run/some hiking, mostly trail/some bushwacking adventure. I headed down the road from our house and then saw a trailhead, so I headed that way, immediately came across a trail marker holding maps! Ooh, maps! They are very basic, but did the job. The whole conservation area is on the slopes of an abandoned ski area and the trails are mostly logging roads and access roads to the ski trails. Nice woods and a few cellar holes, nice old range road and some nice hiking trails up the mountain. I'm eager to take Kristoffer on this run to explore some more!

Mtn Biking 33:00 [3]
ahr:137 max:153 shoes: Specialized mtn shoes
Very easy mtb at Massabesic. We had gone out to breakfast and by the time we got down to Manchester it was high noon and about a million degrees. After only 20 minutes I was drenched in sweat and my legs and body didn't want to move. Saddle sore from yesterday didn't help the situation either. A bit later Kristoffer busted a spoke on his rear wheel and the ride was over. It's OK though, it was good to loosen up the legs and get out a little. So we drove home and went swimming instead which felt much better than riding in the heat.
Swimming 42:00 [3]
Swim across the lake and back. No wetsuit today--way too hot! The first couple of inches of water were disgustingly warm but then the rest was nearly freezing cold! Lots of traffic on the tiny little square kilometer lake, too, so we had to dodge canoes, kayaks and way-too-large-for-the-little-lake motor boats. We're thinking of cutting their fuel line.

Adventure race race 5:00:00 [4]
ahr:157 max:180 slept:6.0
Genesis Sprint #3 Waywayanda, NJ
Raced w/ Joe and Chris and John (another all-male team that are unshakable like leaches.) I wasn't navigating so I can't take responsability for that ( you can look at Joe B's log). But the race went well despite a rather large error on CP A (the second CP of the race.) We came out of it 1st co-ed which was very surprising, and held the 40+ minute lead for the rest of the race.
After a lazy week rcovering from the Philly race, I was worried that my body was going to be fatigued , but once we got going, the legs loosened up quickly and I felt really strong for the rest of the course. Paddling felt good (3 miles on a lake is nothing compared to last weeks 15miles!) and the mountain biking was good and technical in places and I was able to ride all of it pretty well despite some ghost shifting in the rear derailuer and the front shock needing some grease.
Overall, a fun and easy race. Once we lost most of the field Joe could concentrate more on where we were going and not how to drop teams, so for the rest of the race he did very well navigating, as usual.

Road biking 1:20:00 [3]
ahr:143 max:165
Finally got out on the road bikes to go for a ride around Lake Sunapee. Found out that our area has quite a few more hills than we were expecting and for this reason and a few others, we didn't make it around the lake afterall. But, it felt good to get back on the fast bikes, though my legs just didn't want to loosen up, warm up or go up any sort of incline. The lungs were fine and the HR was incredibly low compared to how much my legs were burning. Definitely am not quite recovered from last weekend I guess.

Monday Jun 20

Note
(rest day)
Slept late, worked late, ate dinner, watched Fear Factor, went to bed. Body is definitely fatigued, but sleeping in helped the mind recover at least.

Sunday Jun 19

Adventure race race 13:27:00 [4] 88.0 mi (9:10 / mi)
Raced with Kristoffer and Joe B. A fun and interesting race in and around Philadelphia full of historical intrigue. Included a night urban orienteering aroudn downtown visiting Betsy Ross's house, the liberty bell and such places. Then road ride up to Valley Forge, night orienteering on Fatlands and Mount Joy maps. (Beautiful scenery with the moon setting on the foggy fields and lots and lots of deer!) We finished early enough that night to benefit from the dark zone before we were allowed on the water (at 5:30) so we got to freeze our asses off trying to sleep for a few hours on either the cold wet grass or dry hard pavement. Then up at 5 to get ready, on the water at 5:30 and paddled down the Schulkill back to Philly for the next 3.5 hours. Back and shoulders hurting and butt from sitting on the hard middle "seat" and when that fell apart-the thwart. Ouch. Then finally out of the boat and freezing cold, we got back on teh bikes and rode up to Wissahicon Park where there was some sweet mtn biking with nice singletrack and fast dirttrack. Cruised back to the finish to a nice soft pretzel and several mountain dews. mmm.

Wednesday Jun 15

Running 46:30 [4] 10 km (4:39 / km)
ahr:160 max:172 shoes: Adidas Response
Two loops around the lake again. VERY different weather this time, though. Instead of incredibly hot and muggy, it was cool, drizzly and perfect! My time was only a minute slower than the last run but my HR ranges were drastically lower this time. It's amazing how much the heat affects the body.
Kristoffer and I were together for the first loop and then he split so he could go faster. On the second loop I stopped to watch a family of geese, two big ones and four little fuzz-balls. They were so cute!
The run felt really good, after my legs loosened up they felt strong and my form and breathing was real smooth. I also did 4 strides in the middle of the run to try and help my speed...those felt good too.
Core strength (abs) 8:00 [1]

Tuesday Jun 14

Note
(rest day)
Was thinking of going for a run, should have to work out the lactic acid I built up in that run the other day. But it was really cold, rainy and windy, and who wants to run in that!?? So I made a vegan quiche instead....which didn't turn out too terrible.

Monday Jun 13

Running 45:30 [5] 7.0 mi (6:29 / mi)
ahr:173 max:184 shoes: Adidas Response
Run, two loops around the lake with Kristoffer. Fast pace and brutally hot and humid, which obviously affected the HR. Felt good though, but took some mental toughness to continue past the house and onto the second loop, also to keep my running form efficient coming through the end of the second loop.
A dip in the lake afterwards felt sooooo nice.
Swimming (Lake swim) 36:00 [3] 2 km (18:00 / km)
ahr:153 max:172
Kristoffer and I swam across the lake to the beach and back, tried out the new wetsuit which is awesome!! I float so well! (I've always been a sinker.) Actual swim form felt a lot better than the last time, too, but still choppy as I feel obligated to stop and check out my surrroundings to see whether or not I'm going to swim into a boat or a dead fish or the island. I am getting better at sighting though.

Saturday Jun 11

Mtn Biking 2:40:00 [4]
ahr:157 max:174 shoes: Specialized mtn shoes
Kristoffer and I drove down to Massabesic, in Manchvegas. This area has awesome technical mtn biking on all sorts of singletrack trails. We rode all the singletrack trails (there are also many many miles of dirt track on fire roads and old railroad bed) in this amount of time and we were WIPED! Probably equivalent to twice as hard as a road ride, just for power and mental fatigue. Of course, it was also incredibly humid (same as everywhere else in the northeast) and we probably sweated out at least a gallon each!
Fun ride, but today (monday) I'm still hurting-back mostly, it takes a lot of the blows...I really really wish I had a full suspension bike!!

Friday Jun 10

Mtn Biking 46:00 [3]
ahr:145 max:177 slept:7.0
This was supposed to be a recovery ride, but instead we went on the loop that goes OVER the mountain, which meant working really hard to keep ahead of the mosquitos (which didn't happen) and therefore not really "recovering". But going down the backside of teh hill was awesome. Lots of mud, rocks and water backed up by a beaver dam! Then paved and dirt roads all the way home.
That part was a nice recovery!

Thursday Jun 9

Mtn Biking intervals 53:00 [4]
ahr:140 max:178
Kristoffer and I were supposed to do this workout yesterday, but because of the thunderstorm, we decided to get it in today. warmup and then 3x3' hill intervals with 3' recovery. They were supposed to be graduating, like starting easyish and getting faster and faster, but I think I did them a bit too easy, I'm not so great on hills to begin with and I just couldn't push up these hills in particular. I'm working on it though, and they were certainly tough intervals!!
After the hills, we rode over to the high school track for our running workout.
Running intervals 45:00 [3]
ahr:161 max:184 shoes: Adidas Response
Got off the bikes and jogged around for about 15'. Did 3x100m strides on the baseball outfield, (there was a lacrosse game on the infield of the track so we couldn't do them there, and wanted to avoid all the people swarming the track as much as possible.)
Then we ran 1600m (on the track) jogging the straights and sprinting the corners. This is a lot tougher than it sounds, believe me! Of course, I'm not a sprinter either. Recovered quickly after this by jogging down the dirt road a bit, then back on the bikes for teh ride home..
Mtn Biking warm up/down 12:00 [3]
Ride home from track. Legs felt really good!!

Wednesday Jun 8

Core strength 18:00 [1]
We were going to go for a ride but just as I got home it started pouring rain and lightening, so we sat on the porch instead watching the vicious storm. So, instead of an hour ride I did 18mins of strength...kind of comparable, wouldn't ya say? hmph.

Tuesday Jun 7

Mtn Biking 25:00 [3]
ahr:145 max:174 slept:13.0 shoes: Specialized mtn shoes
Oh my GOD, the mosquitos were horrendous!! The open road to the trailhead was nice, breezy and warm, but once we got a foot into the woods and had to stop to get over a stonewall, they swarmed viciously.
We went for an easy ride to check out whether or not this hiking trail was rideable. The trail supposedly goes to the top of Kearsarge, but I can't figure out how until we ride the whole thing. Wasn't happening yesterday though! We'll have to wait until it dries out more, perhaps it'll be a good later summer ride.
Core strength 10:00 [1]

Sunday Jun 5

Note
(rest day)
Slept in late, went down to Boston to get some wetsuits, was going to go for a recovery run around the lake but ended up not feeling like running AT ALL anyway. Still feeling sore and really tired Monday morning, too. It's amazing how much the heat and dehydration affects recovery.....

Saturday Jun 4

Adventure race race 4:12:00 [4] 27.0 mi (9:20 / mi) +379m 5:33 / km
slept:7.0 shoes: Adidas Response
Genesis AR Sprint race #2
Hartford, CT with Joe B.
Kind of surprised how poorly I felt on the bike and the run, but I suppose I haven't been training as much as I thought. The urban run was boring and really freakin' hot! I don't like running in the heat (nervous about Japan!) and the mountain bike was also boring on a marked course. This race needed more navigation for sure. We ended up squeaking by the rest of the co-ed field nearing the end of the race to finish 1st coed and 2nd overall.
Good race but I gotta get on the bike more!

Thursday Jun 2

Swimming 46:00 [2] 2 km (23:00 / km)
Kristoffer and I donned our wetsuits and swam across our lake and back! It was a lot farther across than I thought, and is a lot different than swimming in a pool! The water was warm the first few feet and then got really cold if you stuck your feet down! It was also fairly clear for this time of year (with all the pollen) but I don't like the mucky bottom anyway. It kind of freaks me out to see the bottom. But, anyway, the swim was fine, I should have worn a swim cap, just to keep my hair out of my face. Other than that, it was a nice swim, and will only get better the more used to it we get.

Wednesday Jun 1

Running 45:00 [4]
ahr:159 max:174 shoes: Adidas Response
Run around the block with Kristoffer. It's an all paved route but rolling and scenic. I was pushing the first 30 mins, took at least 15 mins to warm up and not feel so sloppy but after that I started feeling better, though my breathing was still tight and strained. I think the high humidity *might* have had something to do with it.
