Orienteering 52:00 [3] *** 3.5 km (14:51 / km)
ahr:155 max:171
Met up with Ken Walker at Oak Hill, in Hanover, both of us arriving later than usual due to some crazy amounts of traffic downtown from Dartmouth graduation.
I had "set" a middle distance course earlier, but we haven't set any control flagging on this map yet, so we decided that I'd run first, setting flags as I went, then Ken would run it a few minutes after me. Went fine, well, not really fine, but okay. I set #2 on a spur and only realized that I'd actually set it on a parallel spur after I ran out to a trail that wasn't supposed to be there, (if I had been in the right place. ) So I ran the trail, set 3, then came back in to 2, setting another flag (in the correct location this time). The rest of the course went fine, until #7, when the pit that was the control feature was overgrown and very indistinct, so i re-set the control on a spur nearby, but Ken didn't know that. Plus, I ran out of flagging, so none of the rest of the controls had flags. Poor Ken. Next time I'll be more prepared! yea right.

In any case, the terrain down by Storrs Pond is really cool, varied and interesting. There's a bit of logging going on, but it doesn't seem to affect the map tooooo much!

Orienteering race (Long Dist.) 1:33:00 [4] *** 8.8 km (10:34 / km)
This was another great challenging course, with even nicer woods! This time they were really wide open, not much green at all. LOTS of climb though.
I did not have a good race at all. I felt tired physically from saturday and my ability to navigate wasn't there. I probably could've taken about 15-20 mins off my time!! ouch. The deer flies were horrendous too, which didn't help the concentration.
AND! I lost my footpod... :o( sniff sniff. So frustrating.
Overall, though, it was a fantastic weekend, great weather, woods, organization, maps etc! We'll be back next year, and not only to retain our 3-legged world string-o champions status!

Orienteering race (Middle) 49:58 [4] *** 4.4 km (11:21 / km)
ahr:165 max:181
Great course, great map, great woods (most of the time). Today there was a few areas with slashy stuff, where I took a fantastic faceplant, injuring my OTHER toe! dammit. Took me a bit to get up, make sure I wasn't broken, compose myself, walk it off, then continue running (a bit slower than usual). The rest of the course was fine, though I didn't feel that I was running very quickly.
Orienteering race (Sprint) 17:00 [4] ***
I didn't start my watch until 2/3 of the way trhough, and don't have the map in front of me, so I can't remember all the stats. Sorry.
Great sprint course, challenging amounts of climb, and after running my heart out this morning, eating an hour before the run, then napping 3/4 of an hour before my run, then waking up 20 mins before starting....I wasn't moving too fast. Made several errors, one large one costing me probably a minute, drrrr.... stupid. Oh well, it was fun!

Orienteering race (W3LSOC) 10:00 [3]
World 3-Legged String-O Championships

Nick Duca set a very challenging course indeed. Stairs, downhills, transitions, quick turns, trees, branches etc. After observing some of the first starters, Kristoffer and I decided we needed some last minute practice, especially with stairs and turns. After a quick warm-up, we were off, up the stairs, with a little bobble, quick turn, down the hill, with more bobbles, arond the trees, over the string, down to the branch, over, down to the other stairs, up, with more bobbles and to the finish line. And despite all teh bobbles, we finished in grand time of 32 seconds. Next round wasn't as quick, many bobbles. There was some tough competition, so we had to step it up! After another quick practice session, we managed to hold the competition off in the end, finishing our 3rd and final "race" in a speedy 28seconds!

Event: Nav-Stock

Orienteering (Model) 40:47 [3] *** 4.41 km (9:15 / km)
ahr:161 max:175
Felt SO good to get out in these beautiful woods after a 10hr car ride. Loki appreciated it too, up until 3/4 of the way through when he bonked. It was quite hot and we didn't have any water, he pretty much walked the whole way back to the car. Didn't even need to put a leash on him, he wasn't going anywhere.

Saturday Jun 9

Paddling 1:30:00 [1]
Kristoffer and I were the "safety boat" for Racing Ahead's 12-hr in VT. We got a canoe, some paddles, pfd's and headed out with Loki in the middle just as teams started getting on the water. Nothing like last minute planning.
Loki did pretty well in the boat, though he tried drinking up half the lake, with his two front paws on the gunnels, i thought he was going to flip us sooo many times. But he only jumped out twice, when we neared land. Then we'd throw a stick to him and he'd swim out quite far for being his 3rd time swimming. He definitely put in more mileage than we did!

Orienteering (Burnt Mtn.) 1:03:00 [4] **** 6.7 km (9:24 / km)
ahr:152 max:180
Nice course set by Ken. New controls in a new area!!!! Nice woods over there too.
So, the run wasn't off to a great start, I never found the flag at 1, because SOMEBODY (Ken) hid in down low, under rocks aparently. Then there was again no flag at 2, which APARENTLY a deer ate, or some dirty scoundrel ripped the flag down (uh huh, sure.) Then 3 was no problem, then on the way to 4 I started hearing a dog barking on the trail that I was sort of paralleling, cool! There was someone else out here with a dog too! (Loki was running with me at this point). It was barking a lot! I started wondering why no one was yelling at it to shut up. I kept running, and the dog kept running down the trail also. I kept running, it kept running, i crosssed a trail and kept running and I could hear that the dog had turned onto that trail I had just crossed and was a bit closer now. I kept running, wondering who could possibly be keeping up with me (yea, I'm that fast. ;o) Then, as I neared control 4, I stopped to get a look at this dog that was so angry with me, turned around and the first thing i see is this huge bushy tail, Fox? German shepherd? No, it's a big f'ing coyote! And its' running towards me and now only 20m away! Loki finally stops being afraid for his life of this big barking, sees the coyote and takes off for it. It jogs away a bit, still barking like crazy, and as I call Loki back, I look for a tree that I can climb up. Instead, Loki runs back to me and I decide to forget about control 4 and get back on that trail and run like hell. Which I did. As the barking sound got further away, i slowed down, but for the rest of the run I was looking over my shoulder every so often!
As for the rest of the course, I got 5 and the rest no problem, had a clean, fast run and legs felt strong! Just felt reallllllyyyy lonely in those woods, even with Loki there protecting me!

Orienteering 1:19:15 [4] **** 7.51 km (10:33 / km)
ahr:151 max:170
Burned 674 calories! That doesn't actually sound like a lot, compared to what I probably eat every day... depressing really, that an hour 20 run will only burn off ..oh maybe my lunch! ugh.
Anyway, Kristoffer set a nice course at Burnt Mtn. Went up to the quarry again, which is just a really cool area, really varied and confusing. Again, coming down, I veered off course, but miraculously managed to correct and come out to a trail right where I wanted to. cool!
Legs were really stiff starting out, felt like my ankles couldn't bend or something, but they loosened up after 1.5km and I could move fairly quickly after that.
Good run.

Note
(rest day)
Rainy, somewhat miserable weather. Decided to take a rest day, back is sore from the weekend, then got home and was antsy, needing to do something. Probably should have gone for a run, but by that time, my mind was set on resting. oh well.

Sunday Jun 3

Orienteering race (WCOC Score-O) 1:23:58 [4] *** 9.3 km (9:02 / km)
ahr:156 max:171
Stayed in CT after the AR and went to this meet that Pavi put on. 90 min score-o with trivia at each control. Tricky questions from Snapple Facts, True or false answers. I probably ended up with negative points for answering so many questions wrong! Great woods, map and course.
Thanks Pavi!

Saturday Jun 2

Adventure race race (Genesis sprint) 3:44:00 [4]
ahr:164 max:179
Waywayanda, NJ
Raced with Joe B. for EMS
1st overall, elite division.
I was so happy not to be navigating, and had a lot more fun just concentrating on going fast and finishing first. Felt strong for the first half of the bike, but tailed off a bit towards the end. Paddle was short and easy, felt good to get wet and cool off a bit. Run was good, felt strong the whole way, well, until the last road run to the finish, it was hot!!! Nearly ran out of water and the pollen in the air as we ran through the woods was nearly unbearable, coughing and hacking the whole way.
Good race, thanks Joe!
