| Orienteering 1:13:53 [4] | ||
| North American Champs, Day 1. An ok run, nothing spectacular. The terrain isn't like anyting we have in NH, that's for sure. | ||

Monday May 24 | ||
| Mtn Biking 3:00:00 [4] 36.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| Back in the race, after 12 hours of incredible sleep, we got back on the bikes for a 36 mile road ride up to Errol, NH and into Maine. Quite hilly, but sooooo much better than that 100 + mile ride the day before becuase there were things to look at, cars that passed, houses, people and of course the photographer that was following us that Joe almost took out. | ||
| Hiking 6:00:00 [3] 13.0 mi (27:40 / mi) | ||
| The final trek to the finish. Mostly hiking and bushwacking. Joe was an incredible navigator and I learned a lot just by following and watching what he was doing. And apparently, its good to know surveying because the first CP was on a county boundry with a nice boundry marker (seemingly in the middle of nowhere). We caught up with another team at this CP and they followed us the rest of the way, which was really nice, becuase it gave both of our teams some company and comfort in knowing we weren't the only ones out here in the middle of Maine, and come checking on the navigation. By 7pm, the race was finially over, at Sunday River with us running as fast as we could down the ski slope to the finish line and some pizza, beers and the hot tub. | ||
Saturday May 22 | ||
| Running (Canoe Portage) 2:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (24:00 / mi) | ||
| So begins the Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race.
Race started at 7:30am, slated to finish up around Monday evening. Race began on the west side of Moosehead Lake in Maine with a 4.5 - 5 mile canoe portage to some pond, then a semi short paddle to the headwaters of the Kennebunk River for some exciting whitewater rafting. Then to a 150 mile mountain bike, then 52 mile canoe (with kayak paddles) on flat and rapid water into NH, then a 30 mile trek, then a 40 mile road ride (on mtn bikes) back to ME, to finish up with a 13 mile trek back to Sunday River, ME. Here's how it really went......
| Kayaking 2:00:00 [2] | ||
| Not sure how many miles, but roughly two hours, I think. I kind of lost track of time out there. | ||
| Mtn Biking 18:00:00 [3] 100.0 mi (10:48 / mi) | ||
| This was one hell of a mtn bike ride. We were out in the middle of no where Maine, on dirt logging roads with nothing to look at but woods, road and an occasional clearcut. Check points were spread out 15 - 20 miles between so the ride became pretty boring real quick. Unfortunately, the maps were almost 20 years old and did not show nearly the amount of logging roads that were truly out there. We lost about 4 hours on CP7, about the time that my front shock busted and I had to ride the rest of the 50-odd miles with a rigid frame. This wore out my shoulder and both my wrists rather quickly and along with the ride going into and through the night (during which it began raining) I was not very excited to head out on the water for a 52 mile paddle.
With all four of us falling asleep in our saddles, we decided to sleep for a half hour. So we found a woodshed complete with tarp and curled up under it for a ridiculously cold 40 minutes. Luckily, by the time we shivered ourselves up, it was almost light out again, lifting at least my spirit and allowing myself to keep going. if only to get warm again. Around 9am, (I think) we made it into the TA where we could get dry clothes, warm food and drinks and sleep for our two hour penalty (incurred from lack of mandatory sleeping bag out on the course, which we could have used!)
Thursday May 20 | ||
| Running 25:00 [3] | ||
| An easy run just to get the blood flowing after a day of standing around, and to see if my new shoes will give me blisters...I'm not going to say anything lest it jinx me. Leaving tomorrow for the big race, hopefully I'll come back alive and in one piece.. | ||
Tuesday May 18 | ||
| Mtn Biking 45:00 [2] | ||
| Easy ride alone around massabesic. felt good, could ride most everything that I couldn't do the other day. (it's a technical place) | ||
Monday May 17 | ||
| Note | ||
| Was going to go mtn biking after work, but after an 11 hour work day i was ready to sit down adn eat and go to bed early, prepping for next weekend. ;) | ||

| Day 2 of HVO meet. So much better than yesterday! The cooler weather, earlier (earlier than 1pm!) start time and eating and drinking more helped. Plus, I always seem to do better on the second day. Seemed like better course setting, or else I just felt better about it. But at least today I felt like I could move in the woods and didn't nearly pass out from some freak asthma attack. | ||

|
A lousy run. I started at 1pm in the broiling heat, in which I do not run very well to begin with. The course seemed rather tough, almost west point - like with the legs going up and down hills like they were. Between controls 12 and 13 I made a rather large error and knew I had bonked. Finally made it to 13 but climbing up to 14 I couldn't think anymore, kept changing my route decision and became anxious about being able to finish. When I made it to the top of the hill I had a sort of asthma attack, i guess, and had to stop for a few minutes so i could stop wheezing. It freaked me out, which didn't make things any better. But, I made it out of the woods eventually, even through that discouraging last leg to the GO control.

| Running 30:30 [3] | ||
| ahr:148 max:163 | ||
| Easy run with Sandra on Short Roselawn. Legs felt like bricks, but the run was necessary to get out the quirks from riding yesterday. Taking tomorrow off. finally. | ||
Wednesday May 12 | ||
| Mtn Biking 1:35:00 [3] 9.0 mi (10:34 / mi) | ||
| Mtn ride with Jason around the Massabesic trails. The first time I've been here, sweet sweet ride. apparently the "to do" place around manchester.
Muscles were tired after yesterday, though, especially since I forgot to eat dinner and stayed up too late. Neither adds up for a good recovery. oops.
Tuesday May 11 | ||
| Running 1:20:00 [4] | ||
| I was planning on doing a 30 min. tempo run but due to side cramps, I quite at the 15 min. mark and had to take a 5 min. easy run break. Then did another 15 min when I could run again. 15 and 20 min warm up and cool downs. The first interval was through Walker state forest and felt like orienteering, those trails are so incredibly rocky! The second was pretty mujch all downhill on the road, but very fast! HR at around 177 ave for both. | ||
Sunday May 9 | ||
| Mtn Biking 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| Mtn biking with Mom and Greta on the "Gyro" in Plymouth. This is just always a sweet ride, especially when they rake the trails, so you can go whipping around corners real fast without killing yourself! | ||
Saturday May 8 | ||
| Mtn Biking 2:05:00 [3] | ||
| Mtn biking with Mom in the Ossippee's. Mostly dirt and logging/snowmobile roads. Found a dead (about 2 yrs old dead) moose up in the mountains, big pile of fur and scattered bones in a 200' radius. Pretty cool. And a gorgeous view of Chocorua and Mt. Washington (which still has a few lines of snow on it - let's go!!) | ||
Friday May 7 | ||
| Mtn Biking 55:00 [4] | ||
| After finding out about my race partner Johnathan's cliff fall accident (putting him out for a good yr) I went on a mad mtn ride through Walker and nearly killed myself with all the rocks. Don't tell my mom. | ||
Wednesday May 5 | ||
| Hiking 20:00 [3] | ||
| Another lame workout, but I was dying on this hike, weighed down with at least 50 pounds! Even I would count this as training! | ||
Tuesday May 4 | ||
| Mtn Biking 1:45:00 [2] | ||
| Easy recovery ride at Mines Falls in Nashua with Jason. Sweet park! single track, fast double track and sweet new wheels, it was a good time! And shorty's after for Cinqo de Mayo "eve" | ||
Monday May 3 | ||
| Hiking (Work) 30:00 [2] | ||
| This was suppose to be a rest day, but work had me hiking tripods and the gun up and down this mountain all day. Two trips up with these items, weighing about 40 pounds total, for 15-20 mins each time = a good workout!
I know this sounds pretty lame, but after this weekend's activities, my legs were burning and my heartrate felt like it was at least over 180!
Sunday May 2 | ||
| Orienteering (West Point) 1:21:44 [4] 5.67 km (14:25 / km) +350m 11:01 / km | ||
| Day 2 west Point
After the race yesterday, my legs, shoulders and wrists were hurting and a decent warm up was in need, but of course, that never happened. Despite all this, my time was pretty good, considering the errors I made and the incredibly slow running! Lots of hesitation even though the map was a 1:15 (smaller than 1:24 yesterday I suppose!) Ridiculous course setting and fog and drizzle and thorn trees made me want to quit (again) but I'm glad I didn't. Thorn trees, who ever heard of such a thing!? I think it's some west point secret weapon.

Saturday May 1 | ||
| Adventure race (Genesis 1) 3:00:00 [3] 15.0 mi (11:59 / mi) | ||
| I'd rather not talk about it.
At least it was a nice day out.
