Note
In case anyone was at all interested in Kristoffer and my route this weekend...
(Personally, I thought it was pretty good strategy, but since all you good guys went the opposite way, I'm starting to doubt myself...) Was our way okay? Would we have been able to move alright on the northern section after completing the southern part? I'll never know. What were your thoughts, Joe or Peter, or whoever else that might read my log that did the event....
Start, left the TA a few minutes late due to poor timing, and not being quite ready before getting maps...beginners mistake.
32, 21, 52, 54, 42, 51(an easy 18min out and back road run with no packs!), 74, 63, 46, 50, 35, 56, 40, 36, 64, 25, 66, 81, (got dark now, which I thought was pretty good timing for heading into the more urban section/less technical during the dark.)90, 70, 33, 13, 41, and then on the way to 45 we got stuck in that same headhigh vegetation that PG got caught in and Kristoffer's leg seized up and didn't want to move anymore. So we bailed out on the trails towards 53 and then down towards 12 (not getting either of these points) and hobbled the 8+km back to the finish.

Event: Laurentian Rogaine

Orienteering race (N.A. Rogaine Champs) 18:00:00 [2] **
Kristoffer and my first ever Rogaine, and of course it would be the championship...that's how we do it!
After a pretty poor nights sleep with pouring rain and uncomfortableness on the ground, we had an excellent breakfast and got ready for the race. Got the maps in more pouring rain and planned out a spectacular strategy that got most of the technical and close together controls during the daylight, then headed into the more urban section during the night, and then would get more technical controls the next morning. Worked out really well, too, as we nailed the nav except for maybe 10 mins total of errors (on 46 mostly) and as planned, dark came while running the roads 81 to 90. Perfect!
A few hours later, however, Kristoffer had some real problems with his knees/legs and, knowing how much pain he was in and how much he can actually tolerate, we bailed out from between 41 and 45 to the rail trail below and hobbled back to the finish, covering about 9k in 3 hours, getting no controls. BUT! We racked up about 1200 points before bailing at around 1:30 am, so I think we would have done really well if we were more in shape and took care of our feet better! Lessons learned.
Props to Francis for his fantastic map and controls placements! Unlike AR, all the controls (that we visited) we in the correct location! Imagine that...) Can't wait to do it again next year!

Run/Hike 3:00:00 [2] **
Scouting w/ my mom for the Racing Ahead 24-hr. Sorry, can't tell you where, but it's in central New Hampshire! Bushwacking and trailrunning. Found some great areas, a really cool rocky streambed and a cliff that would make a great ascent to get out of this rocky streambed. Who knows if it'll get used, but a cool area nonetheless.

Run/Hike long 6:45:00 [3] 17.0 mi (23:49 / mi) +2100m 10:42 / km
ahr:146 max:181
Great run/hike up in the northern Presi's with Joe B, Kristoffer and Loki. Up through the Great Gulf, Sphinx to Jefferson, off Jefferson the wrong direction, so we had a minor detour around the peak to the correct trail. Back on track, up over Adams, then Madison and down the Osgood Trail. No views to be had from the summits, everything was socked in and we couldn't see more than 50 feet at times. Blowing pretty well too, as usual.
Loki was pretty amazing going up Sphinx and even across some of those nasty, rugged rocks. He's quite sore and tired even today, doesn't even really want to play frisbee...that's tired!
Amazingly, I feel pretty good, legs are not too sore, must be due to the large Flatbread pizza and beer we had in Conway when we got down!

Run/Hike (Mt. Ascutney) 1:24:00 [4] 6.2 mi (13:32 / mi) +750m 6:07 / km
ahr:164 max:186
Ken Walker suggested a Mt Ascutney trail run instead of orienteering this week and it was a fantastic idea! The trail up was rough footing and steep in places, and I could only hike. But I've decided that running uphill is all in your head and if you can keep your mind into thinking that it's easier to run than hike, it is! When we finally made it the 2.9 miles to the summit, we had an awesome view over VT and into NH from the top of the lookout tower. We even got Loki to warily make his way up, and I think he got used to the height after a bit.
The trail down (we stashed a car at a trailhead on the opposite side of the mtn.) was AWESOME! Beautiful "smooth" (relatively) trail down from the top, then steeper and rocky, but fun as hell to go bombing down! Then down to the quarry where Loki slipped into some awful smelling pool of muck. And then we just cruised down the cart path to the parking lot.
What a great run, we will have to do it again!

52 minutes up, Ave HR 164 Max 183 (felt like it should be soooo much higher!!)

Running 43:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:36 / mi)
ahr:166 max:184
Ran the railroad bed loop, which i remember is something around 5miles, a bit over, I think.
Was by myself, so I could go as slow as I wanted, but instead I felt good and cruised, made it to the railroad bed from teh house in 17.5 mins, which usually takes around 18.5 to 19 mins. Then I was just cranking along down the trail, and it was getting darker,...and darker....and darker. I'm not usually one to get scared in the woods, but there could be weirdo's out in these parts...I just didn't know! So, instead of my HR going around 155 that it was before i hit the trail, now it was up around 175 and I must've been doing some 6 min miles, or so it felt. Then, by the time i hit the small trail up to the house, it was getting really dark, but in this area the woods were a bit more open, and I could tell that there weren't any sketchy people about. Comforted by these feelings, I managed (the second time!) to run the entire hill, (knowing also, that it would just get darker if I walked) and this time I felt good about it, (legs and lungs were cranky last time). By the top of the trail it was seriously dark and I almost twisted my ankle because I couldn't really see the ground. But then I popped out of the woods onto our dirt road and whoa! it was like midday! crazy how thick the canopy was in some places!

Saturday Aug 4

Run/Hike 4:40:00 [2]
Hike up Washington via Jewell Trail, to summit, down towards Lakes via a few different (less traveled) trails, then down the highway that is the Ammonosuc Ravine Trail.
I was going to go up Lafayette and do the Franconia Ridge, but mom called up and suggested bringing my cousin (from PA, flatlanders) up Washington for the full White Mtn/above treeline affect. So Kristoffer, Loki and I met up with them and did that instead.
Great weather, especially for Washington, not even THAT windy. And, oh, it felt soooo good to be up there, up in the thin(ner) air, cool breezes, above treeline, big mtns....I love it. I'm ready to move to France and build a little mountain cabin and herd goats and hike and run around in the mtns all day! (or swissland, Sandra!)
C • goats? 5

Wednesday Aug 1

Running 46:00 [3] 5.1 mi (9:00 / mi)
ahr:166 max:181
Ran the railroad bed loop. Most of the way by myself as I decided that I couldn't/didn't really want to keep up with Kristoffer this time. So I lagged behind a bit, but he was kind enough to wait for me once in a while. Was able to run the whole hill back up to our road (it's quite steep for most of the way!)
Sore today though, I need to get out more often.................laaaazzzzyyyyy
