| felt pretty drained after my exam this afternoon and didnt really feel like going for the hard run I had been thinking of doing, so decided to go for a steadier run exploring Rivelin. since most of my training will probably be there next year, thought I should check it out. decided I would just run following whichever paths looked most interesting and see where that got me
have a massive amount of crap to learn for monday, so may have to pull a pinker tomorrow....se how it goes... as I was heading towards goodwin nails drove past and shouted out to me. this was silly on his part, because if he hadn't I wouldn't have noticed, but because he did I got a car-load of points. 18 to be exact: 4*2 sheffield orienteers (Nails, Little Rob, Zanthe, Laura) 1*10 non-sheffield orienteer (Lizzie A) Total: 29 points

| Swimming tempo 45:00 [3]1.27 km (35:26 / km) | ||

| a lot less relaxing swim than intended.
did 15 lengths at reasonable pace, for me (all breaststroke) then the sauna wasnt open/on so couldnt use that. and was getting very bored of swimming so found the only way to stop myself from getting bored was to chase someone. tried to catch someone who was nearly 2 lengths ahead of me....took me 12 lengths (400m) to get them, but I did, then carried on this silly amount of effort for a further 4 lengths then did a gentle 7 to finish with. did couple of minutes stretching between each block of swim.

| Running 40:00 [3] | ||
| ahr:148 max:175 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| did a little loop before intervals, up shore lane, along tapton cresent and down crookes road to somerfield. got there to find everyone had left except neill and liz who were going down on bikes, so I kinda raced them down to endcliffe.
then ran through to bingham, did little warm up with few drills. leg losener jog after with neill then I ran home via riverdale and through campus.
| Running hills 27:07 [5] | ||
| ahr:170 max:186 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| didnt want to do the session everyone else was doing because it was virtually the same as what I did on tuesday. so I decided to do a tough hill session on the steep grassy slope by the roundabout.
set: 30sec effort, run down rec; 60sec effort, run down rec; 90sec effort, run down rec. 75sec rec between sets. did 3 sets, then liz persuaded me to do my final one cos she said when you least feel like doing it, it makes more difference...or somthing like that. so did 4 sets anyway. was trying to get further everytime, and did except for the 4th set. I still got further than set 1, but couldn't beat set 3s records cos I smashed it on set 3.

| trains around endcliffe/bingham and whitely wood.
did 8 loops, which were pretty good. was trying fairly hard on the technique loops then was easy running between the loops, was trying to keep moving the whole time, did drills at the end of one loop whilst waiting for the others. was about 5-6km straight lone but ran quite a lot further than that, acounting for everything. was orienteering quite smoothly. went back to check a few features on some of the loops, but the map was sufficient most of the time. water levels were very high, meaning all river crossings and even stepping stone options were a no-go. was probably intensity 3 on the tech loops and intensity 2 on the rest... lost time on a couple of legs due to silly route choice (i.e. trying to go direct across the river in whitely wood - rob got a huge lead on me due to me doing that), and on the fifth loop, I for some reason ran from the start to #2, got half wayt o 3 and realised, then went back, passing rob and nic who started behnind me :( good session with the boys. know what they need over the winter now in order to win busa ;)

| ahr:171 max:180 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| second attempt, and it wasnt a good one. felt bit light headed before hand and dont think I was in the best shape for it. did mass start this time, which helped all the others to getting pb's. but not me. set off hard, but as I started dying at level 5, I slowed, kind of to stop myself blacking out like last time (think its worse second time round). ended up walking a lot of the flights, got to 11, and had about 55seconds to do the last 8 floors if I was going to break the record, so I thought 'thats impossible' and pretty much gave up, wlking and weazing up the rest. ended up not really being impossible, as I still finished in 2:20.0 , a personal worst. but only 4 seconds off John's elusive record.
will have it next time....maybe tomorrow if I feel crazy...
| Running intervals (Paternosta Shuttles) 4:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| thought I'd give the paternosta challenge a go on the way down:
-jumping out of the pod, running and touching the opposite wall, then getting back in the same pod before it's gone past- turned out to be rediculously easy, I was jumping out when the pod had only just got below the previous floor (through a gap about 1m high) then there was no trouble getting across and back. would be more of a challenger to have 2 people getting across and back in a relay every time. did 20 floors (had to miss one becasue there was a guy waiting who would have taken my pod, and another because architechts had covered the room with paper and tables..

| Running intervals (clock racing) 15:30 [5] | ||
| ahr:164 max:187 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| did 3 long interval reps, starting at the same place, running hard along paths, then turning round at a certain time and trying to get back to the starting point (taking the same route) in less time than it took to get there.
had 1:45 easy running between reps. 1. turned in 2:30, got back in 4:55 (win) 2. turned in 2:00, got back in 4:06 (lose) 3. turned in 1:30, got back in 2:59 (win) 2-1 to me. score. was get quite bad stitches, so was good to have to push through them. saw zanthe and Laura D out for a chatty run as I was on my third rep. 2 points. total: 13points
Monday May 26 | ||
| Running 32:00 [3] | ||
| ahr:142 max:155 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 'O' | ||
| run up into Crookes, to Bolehill park. did sprint-o, then run along top of rivelin, over into sandygate, down to fullwood road and in via broomhill. | ||
| Orienteering (physical sprint) 8:55 [5]*** 1.6 km (5:34 / km) +105m 4:12 / km | ||
| ahr:172 max:181 spiked:13/15c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 'O' | ||
| planned a short sprint course on bole hill park. 1.6km straight line. all the open was really long grass and the woods were grotty as usual, so combining that with a course which went up and down the hill made it really tough. plus I had a black-and-white print out of the map so it was difficult to read too.
planned in some of the techniques planners are starting to use at big events to split up the runners. lost about 5sec at one of the controls on my first loop because I had misread the paths and was not where I was expecting to be coming into the control, quickly adjusted. lost more time later on by taking a stupid route out of the common control on a long(er) leg, hadn't had the time to look at the detail in the middle of the leg and pick out the paths, so bombed around the outside where I had run before....maybe a 2sec hesitation to read the straighter route would have been quicker.... good course and I enjoyed it.
Sunday May 25 | ||
| Running 27:30 [2] | ||
| ahr:133 max:151 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| didnt feel like going out today, but thought I should get the legs turning over and see what they could cope with after fridays fun run.
easy run down to hunter's bar, along through endcliffe into bingham. did hill set, run along then did wooded hill rep. then did drills and ran home from bingham, up riversdale and through campus.
| Running hills 5:35 [5] | ||
| ahr:161 max:173 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| hill reps on the steep grassy slope in bingham, near the roundabout. did 5 reps up to the top of the bowling greens.
about 30seconds effort and a bit less on recovery, running down. then did one longer rep in the woods up to the main contouring path (mainly to get away from the public to do drills) didnt really have any speed in the legs but felt good strength and power-wise which I was pleased with.
| Running (drills) 9:20 [3] | ||
| ahr:143 max:166 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| did a nice long set of drills and strides in bingham / whitham woods
included the weird drills we did at club intevals in Goteborg in January. I couldnt do them to save my life then, was just about getting them right today but felt odd as I dont do them regularly.

| post exam long run.
met gaz and ba-ba at hunters bar, then set off up porters clough. had to stop at the top cos my LSD pace was too quick for gaz and nic wasnt too happy either. carried on into burbage mines to get more complaints so decided it would be best for me to go ahead and knock out a good pace on my own. cut straight across burbage mines/marsh and crossed the road to the main burbage moor, along the peat bog path to burbage edge, along to burbage bridge, up and along stanedge, doubled back to stanedge pole, down to redmires, up and over to the head stone, through the wood to Rivelin Dam, straight up the steep slope to the top path and lo behold who did I run into, Gaz and nic after they cut straight to redmires/wyming brook from stanedge pole. I ran with them for 5min then decided to push on to the end. followed along by the golf course, then cut in to main road, down car sick hill road, gladstone road, fullwood road, and in through broomhill. not the epic route I had originally thought of, that can wait for another day, but still a really good run. was quite atmospheric with it being all grey and cloudy. one took one tumble, which is pretty good for me ;) top of my foot was pretty sore for the whole run today...just tried to ignore it :S Route here

| ahr:143 max:167 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| run into broomhill with fazzingbum, down to endcliffe park, into the woods, and back up the hill with the troops.
saw the lazy arse that is ba-ba walking somewhere gay as we were getting back up westbourne road (although, in fairness, we are going for an epic, fully clothed mission run tomorrow, so rest is probably wise) (2points, 7 total)
| Running intervals 25:00 [5] | ||
| ahr:149 max:179 shoes: Asics GT-2120 | ||
| Intervals around the short wooded loop, in threes, so fairly long recovery.
two sections, one of 30sec effort and one of 65sec. no idea how many reps I did...lost count, but it was 25min sesion. stretched off by the monument afterwards. we were joined by some local folk tonight too, one of whom was pretty rapid. didnt quite feel right today...weird feeling in my throat, not sore throat feeling, kind of dry thirsty feeling, as if I'd just had some dry gin or something. odd :S

| Loxely Spring Cup
pretty good course, onyl a few bits of boring running, onyl really lost significant time in three places: #2, didnt realise the sadle was what it was and turned right even though I was straight on line for the control. #6 I took, what was the biger track on the map (actually smaller on the ground :S ) and then got the what should have been an open field to run down and it turned out to be head-high brambles - lost over a minute from having to run round. #17 I got right up to the depression and didn't see the boulder or control so milled around losing at least another minute. quite good run, annoying to lose the time I did, pushed reasonably hard, which is a first for me in the Spring Cup.

| ahr:183 max:188 shoes: Asics Gel DS Racer VII | ||
| not the best conditions for a 3k, it was really windy, and the wind was somehow against me on 3 sides of the track :S
I didnt feel too good either, was tired and I think I was pretty dehydrated, which was an error. wanted to try to maintain my target pace (75s 400m's). set off too quick on first 200 against the wind, as ever. then settled, first 2 400s were ok bu I just couldn't hold any pace, was dropping off throughout the whole thing, I knew after 1k that it was going to be a bad time. wanted to drop out after 1600m but thought I may as well grind it out even if it is slow. so, quite a way off my pb set in November, and I felt worse at the end than I did then too :( 200m: 35 600m: 74 (1:49) 1000: 76 (3:05) 1400: 77 (4:22) 1800: 80 (5:42) 2200: 80 (7:02) 2600: 82 (8:24) 3000: 79 (9:43)

| Short, sharp wooded hill reps in Bingham
starting on the flat grass by the little shack thing, over the main path and straight up the hill to the path with contours the top of the steep slope. it was a 17-20second rep and at 20m of climb, I'm fairly happy with the pace I was pushing out. was really focussing on the speed aspect, so gave everyone really long recoveries, running in pairs as a sort of relay. aim was 10 reps, got to 8 and I was really feeling sick, so rested off for a couple of mins (time not included) then did one longer rep up to the tennis courts at the same pace, with james. got virtually up to them but my quads were burning so much I physically couldn't move an inch further uphill. calfs were really tight, losened off during the session then were a little sore on the way home.
Wednesday May 14 | ||
| Running 1:00:00 [2] | ||

| battery in HRM died so dont know HR but got time of ba-ba
quads and hams weren't tight like they were all day yesterday but my calfs were giving me real jip, just tried to ignore them down to hunters bar, up through the parks into Eccy woods with Nails and ba-ba. run home with ba-ba, was absolutely shafted.

| Sprinc Cup, round something
Eccy Woods ran non-compass, as per usual took the ipod shuffle with me so played it on full volume all the way round, as a constant distraction to really try to get myself focussing hard. it bloomin worked as well, coming out of number 2 I didnt ever get on the path I was intending to and ended up going off at about 30degrees to what I should have because I was singing and had no sense of my direction. ended up passing kim leaving #5 (still didnt twig) then worked out what I'd done when I hit the road!! 2-2:30 error! first one of those in a long time. quick recovery and was then clean til #10 where I made a little miss and magic caught me, I out-routed him to 11, but Nails caught me there. I stook with Nails on the way to 12, magic chugged behind and was left. I left Nails behind at 13 cos he was monkeying around in the bushes. cruised through the rest seemingly catching everyone....until got to the last control and decided to race Alex to the finish. problem was I couldn't line my map up at the speed we were going and had no idea where I was running and I think Alex was trusting me! relocated near the road then Nails popped out in front (eventually catching me back) and mike had the cheek to assume I'd been on the Northrop express. tsk couldn't decide whether to put intensity 3 or 4 because it was a nice steady pace but I was tired from yesterday so it was more effort than it perhaps would have been...enjoyable though -also, thought there aren't any brambles so wore ankle socks, forgot about the holly bushes and seemingly I ran through every one :S
| C • No brambles!? 4 | ||
| Note | ||
| just realised...think this is the first orienteering i have done without taping the mankle since february, kinda forgot about it. turned both ankles quite a lot but only little turns which hurt for a minute or two but you keep going. they feel fine now though, so maybe I'll ice to make sure but think they'll be ok :D | ||

after the race, ba-ba and I decided we should make the most of the free jelly babies on offer, so we ate a lot. so much so we both got Jelly headaches. kinda like brain freeze but jelly, so doing the sensible thing when we got home, we went to balti king for dinner :D

absolutely aweful start to fell running. started the race at comfortable pace and was well in 3rd, rob leading and Neill equally spaced between us, was going to hold this and then wait for the long road stretch to kick and get Neill. However, coming down the first river crossing I got a huge stitch on my right hand side. then on the climb after the river I got a stitch on my left too, which by the time I got to the top of the hill had turned to full stomach cramp. gutted, I could not muster any more than a jog walk, so the pack then caugh me and I was moving backwards for the whole friggin race :s zanthe cruised past me on the final hill down to the finish, taking first lady, then Rhys bursted past me just before the finish as he held off some other dude. I wasnt going to be fighting anybody though, wanted to projectile vomit everywhere just to feel better. still cant have been going that slow overall though because the poker adict didnt get anywhere near me :P

| it is such a nice day I couldn't resist the peaks calling out to me, so packed my stuff. ipod, camera, water, food and spare top. not that i'd have needed it.
went down through endcliffe park, took the high path through bingham then up the valley to the ponds. up to Ringinglow, up to Burbage, had a 10minute play in terrain in the mines, accross the mines to Brown Edge Farm, up Rud Hill, down to Redmires, across the dam between the top two reserviours, then into wyming brooke before getting into lodge moor. then carried on along the top of this alpine valley coming back to the main road at the end of the Hallamshire golf club, by the bupa place. up and down through crosspool, down past whats left of ranmoor and home through broomhill. awesome views the whole way, really enjoyable had a couple of photo stops, took most on the run and drank on the run to keep moving. loved it route: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-kingdom/sheffie...

| a better, but still not good day.
had no energy before I started and my back was in agony from yesterday. started out confident again, knowing that yesterday was not anything like the form I am in, was a little hesitant on the first few controls because they were quite vaugue and I didnt want to make big misses, caught allan cherry just after spectator and he then took every footstep I did after that. I was running clean through everything, knew where I was, and where I was going next the whole time. lost about 1min tops at 19 because the woods I was in looked more like the 'runable in one direction' stuff than the light green I was meant to be in. so I ran left then hit the wall and realised I was about to spike th control if I'd stayed on my line. grrr I lost about 20sec on number 28 by not seeing the kite and running past the reentrant. other than these two, it was just small hesitancies and runnign speed which slowed me down. oh, no. I also ran to the wrong friggin last control, no idea why I knew it wasnt mine and had been navigating to mine, think I just switched off when I saw a kite. however cherry even followed me to the wrong kite... twisted ankle early on but dont think it slowed me down so...very borderline for selection. whats new. a cracking record in fcc finals, one good race in four years (middle in 1st year m18). maybe its not meant to happen...maybe no dee juniors are meant to run jwoc... oh well, if I'm not in the team I still have week and a half of training out there and I can go beast Oringen.

| went into today really confident, picked up the course and saw the intricacies and thought I can have this, but I found it really hard to relate the map to the ground throughout the race. I'm glad it wasnt 1:15. made several big errors in the green by navigating into the centre of the circle, not seeing the feature or kite and then no knowing how I'd gone wrong and faffing in the circle. caught dave abrams and ed louth about halfway round and tried to push the pace, but they both sat behind me and didnt take the lead, so I was pushing harder than could have done :S
found it really tough physicaly too - strained my back after 40min of running with my torso at 90degrees to my legs. put a hole in my map top too - what a crap area :P lost around 7mins easy. bad bad bad day. got beat by all the little children.

| jog into broomhill to meet group. jog down to endcliffe park, pre-run of the intervals loop in the wood. then I did about 5minutes of jogging around the loop, did about 15minutes of various drills/strides and did one hill effort @70% and one track effort @80% then jogged back to entrance of park to walk home.
nice and easy to losen up before le weekend. saw GraceE stretching (not running) at entrance to endcliffe -> 2points (4point total)
